Listening to the press conference now: director of business operations saying that the "G"'s on either side of the baseball are supposed to mimic a split finger fastball.  I can see that now that I look at the logo.

If it takes someone telling you something to see it, that's not exactly great logo design lmao

It might look better, but I think they wanted to show the wings on either side of the ball to evoke the Guardian statues, with the ball being the head.

If you go with a side profile it just ends up looking like a winged G on a baseball.

It honestly doesn't look like them.   The statues' wings are attached to... well, it seems to vary between statues.   But the way the letters are positioned and the way the wings attach to them make it looked like a winged helmet.

But I love Thor.   He's my favorite.   So perhaps that's why I enjoy the logo.   I don't really dig it as the primary, but I expect it's going to get bounced to secondary where it belongs in a couple years.

Ahh...   someone said that, but I thought they means the negative space of the new block C was supposed to be that.

THANK YOU!!!

A lot of people on this forum say stuff like "Twins should switch to Pink and Green because there's too much RWB in baseball!" We've had these colors since we were the Senators in 1901. Go bug the Rangers, Angels, and Nationals if it annoys you that much. Leave us alone

I hate it, especially with how different the teams apply their colors.   Even if they use the same shade, they're easily distinguishable, far more than the royal and white teams in Los Angeles and Kansas City.   The RWB don't really look alike at all unless you just aren't paying attention.

Congrats! You’re like 80% of the people who’ve seen this movie and find it revolting, which is 100% understandable and probably the most accurate take. I just love the unfiltered Dan Ackroyd and the set design.

Me and my friends watch films every Saturday and often will watch something if someone is lost.   With the loss of the beloved Humpty, I threw that on, having once caught it on Comedy Central in the afternoon twenty years ago.   They were horrified.   I couldn't stop giggling.

This thing is called "the Guardians Fastball."  Can't say that helps much.

I think I'm one of three people who likes this 😢

It's my favourite part of the whole rebrand.

That logo looks like it should be on top of a gas station in a small town that you pass through while on your way to somewhere better.

You're not wrong. In fact you're very, very right!

But that's why I love it. I have a weakness for kitsch.

I think Guardians was an excellent choice in light of all the circumstances. It fits, has some continuity in terms of sound, and it’s unique. They went from one of the most generic names possible with no connection to the city to one the most unique names with a strong connection to the city (and yes, they left the negative aspects of the old name behind).

That said, those fonts look really bad. They obviously wanted continuity. I don’t understand why they didn’t at least keep the old block C and Cleveland font. The Guardians font is still weird but if they had just kept the Cleveland and number fonts the same it would be less of a downgrade overall.

You clearly didn't realize they retired Chief Wahoo 3 years ago.

I mean this website never seemed to clue into that. Wahoo is still listed as a present logo.

Cincinnati is the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about Ohio because of @Sportand because of the timeless classic sports action movie Airborne. This is probably 60% of my retained Ohio history.

I always think of Cincinnati over Cleveland when it comes to Ohio because I thought the Bengals had the coolest uniforms when I was a kid.

EDIT: For the record, Columbus is the biggest city in Ohio.

Unless it's changed recently...

City proper: Columbus

Metro area: Cincinnati

Metro area only counting in Ohio: Cleveland

Also, I don't love the winged logo, but I'll take a cheesy sleeve logo over slapping the monogram there too.

I'll just say again: MORE ART DECO! There's so much more potential in this branding change than this initial release shows.

I does have a certain level of charm to it that basically everything else in this set (IMO) is lacking. But it’s a certain kind of charm that fits, like, a college summer wood bat league, or something. I dunno, if this had been the look going back 50 years or so, it would be passable. Boring, but nothing more so than any of the other old timey looks. In 2021, though?  It just looks hokey. Unbecoming of a team in the top league in the world, I guess 🤷‍♂️

Maybe as the sleeve trim. As long as it's not something fat instead of slim.

Again, you're not wrong. I'm just saying that if you made a Toronto Maple Leafs logo that looked like worn down gas station logo from rural Ontario I'd buy a t-shirt.

We all have our weaknesses! 😛

Cincinnati (and Northern Kentucky) were pretty sweet when I last visited in the mid-2000s. And Great American is an incredible ballpark.

I had a way better time in Cincinnati than Cleveland. Glad to hear it's on the rise; American needs affordable, cool cities to live in.

I feel like I've been weirdly praising this city too much on here lately, but I always say it's the easiest place I've ever lived. It punches well above its weight class for fun and activities, but has all the benefits of a smaller city. Everything is close to everything else as opposed to the sprawl of, say, Columbus. Nightlife is good, food scene is great, tons of fun things to do, architecture drips with history and character, cool topography, not unlivable winters, lots of pro and college sports options, and I was able to buy a cool old house with a bunch of charm and a nice yard in a nice neighborhood for a price that made my Seattle friends fall out of their kayaks. My favorite thing of all is there's this sort of collective attitude among people in my generation to stay now and will it into being a cool place to live whereas my wife's parents' generation didn't care one way or the other if downtown burnt to the ground.

I mean uhhh IT SUCKS NOBODY MOVE HERE!

Huh...   Somehow I missed a couple pages in the middle there, including someone else already calling out the Thor likeness.

People are stupid.  It's because people weren't educated on it and people are hypocrites.  "Oh we gotta keep Chief Wahoo and Indians because of the history..." ok well the most historic logo is the block C... so do you care about history or protecting your closeted bigotry?  That is always my issue.

Every baseball team NEEDS a strong, stand alone monogram logo.  Every team in the Majors has one, and almost throughout all of minor league baseball as well.  They could have modified it a LITTLE to mirror the Guardians statues.  But it didnt need to be redone.  It was fine where it was and was a classic element of good baseball uniforms.

Most people either hated the C or wanted a real logo to go with it.

It's still new to me, but I REALLY dislike the new monogram and feel like they managed to downgrade from one of the more boring/generic logos in sports. I mean, at least it was classy. I don't even want to get a cap with this cartoony bendy guy on it. Maybe a home jersey though.

Odd logo placement, but yeah the team is gonna look about the same.

Hilarious that with a big rebrand they still created a similar but not identical C for the Cleveland wordmark.

It wasn't classic.   It wasn't classy.   It was literally the alphabet equivalent to standard block numbers.   Every team in Major League Baseball does... SOMETHING to differentiate their cap logo.   The Indians had a serif.   Even if they had just put an outline around it it would have at least made it somewhat legible and standout.   But they didn't.   The new logo is something.   They did something.   It's something.

I wish they could have done a logo similar to a local Cleveland brewery.

HOP SALES — Barn Talk HopsMarket Garden Brewery's Progress Pilsner clone - Brew Your Own

Perhaps that's exactly why they didn't go that way.   To not get into legal trouble for being to similar to the existing logos.   Also, I imagine the team wants to at least get to a full decade without a face on their cap.

They couldn't get Dennis Haysbert as Pedro Cerrano to do it?

But do you have him do the accent?   Then you get in trouble with the same crowd that caused the change to begin with.

Oh, man.   Get behind me Satan.   Now you got me imagining them with a profile version of the G logo on both sides with the wing pointed back.   Like a football uniform.   That would be so goofy and stupid but I would kinda love it deep down in places I don't talk about at parties.

🙄 Sure, a simple logo based on a letter first used in 1915 could never be considered classic or classy. I mean, every team does something *throws sheet over the Cubs cap*

Look, I don't even love the Block C. I've wanted a white stroke or some variation on it to be more distinct from the start. I just think they swung and missed on the "something" they did. Probably won't last anyway, but it's easily the weakest part of the rebrand IMO.

I have to say that the "Guardians" font reminds me of the Kinston Indians...like, a lot reminds me of the Kinston Indians.
I don't like it when teams use script at home and block on the road (or vice versa).
And I really, really wish the plaque of custom number fonts would end. MLB block is perfectly fine, and the teams using it should continue to.
Except for the first point, I'm sure that MLB would say "the youths" who don't care about MLB disagree strongly with my points.
I'm sure that Nike and MLB have a series of worse designs on tap for release after the World Series, and we'll all forget about this in the deluge of awful they unleash then.
Your mileage may vary.

Count me in with the "Spiders > Guardians" crowd, but as far as names go, it's not bad.

I think my biggest problem with everything about this brand is how much it reeks of "well actually, we still want our old name and identity." Between the -dians name, keeping all the touchstones of the identity the same (red "C" on a blue hat, new scripts are inspired by the old ones, another decades out-of-date sleeve logo), and keeping the colors the same, it feels like the organization's approach was an attempt to jedi mind trick the universe that there was never a change at all.

The effect of that is like removing a controversial-but-popular painting in a museum and now we're left looking at a printed copy with all the controversial aspects cropped out, rather than simply going out and finding a new work of art to replace it with.

Look, I realize that that the team has a history that it's mostly proud of and that there are some fans out there who are really happy that the bare minimum changed.  But from an outside perspective, it's been almost 75 years since the team won a World Series and the biggest contribution of the team to the cultural zeitgeist since was a movie from 30 years ago.

It's ok to let things die sometimes, especially when they've run their course. Some people will disagree and that's ok. I just wish this felt more like a trade of one identity for another rather than a simple whitewashing.
