I like the idea of having an alternate helmet but the NFL has to make sure that it is only one alternate helmet. Otherwise, as others have said, it could turn into college football. I'm not naive enough to think that these teams would have restraint if given the opportunity for multiple helmet options.

My point is they don't have restraint now. Eleven different uniform combinations in a 16-game season is silly; different helmets would all but assure 17 individual combinations for some teams going forward.

I'm in favor of alternate helmets, but only for throwbacks. However, I know that if they drop the "safety" excuse, we'll get alternate helmets for every team and that is not something I want to see, so I'd rather we just stick with the one-helmet rule for now.

I could get on board with a "two-helmet rule" that would essentially force teams to pick between using the second option as a throwback or an alternate team color of some kind. That way, most teams would simply be allowed to bring back their throwback looks that we miss, and teams lacking that history (Panthers, Ravens, Texans) could still mix it up and participate.

That's a win-win that limits the NFL from going full Oregon, but still gives teams a little more freedom and variety.

@henburg has the right idea. Last thing I want to see is Nike deciding that the NFL should be a laboratory like the NBA and the University of Oregon are. It’s fine for the NBA because there are far fewer elements in an NBA uniform set thus making many different looks for each team viable. And Oregon is intimately tied to Nike by way of Phil Knight so of course they’re a guinea pig. That and it gives Oregon quite the recruiting pull.

But the last thing I want to see is the Seahawks Neon Green uniforms against the Broncos in all orange helmet to cleats. Nobody wants to see that.

Why do they need freedom and variety? Pick your best look and wear it every freaking game.

I get it - this community is involved with logos and colors and uniforms and we like that stuff. That doesn't mean that we have to have teams wearing 8 looks over the course of 17 games. If we need that, we have the concepts forum 😁

No, it isn't right for the NBA because they have fewer uniform elements. If I turn on an NBA game and there's a team wearing blue, that shouldn't be the Milwaukee Bucks because that isn't a team color.

Guess what???

It all just depends on what you enjoy within sports aesthetics I guess. If standardization and tradition is your thing, then sticking to one set combo for home and away would be ideal and I get that. For me, I enjoy seeing new and different things over the course of a season. It allows for a team to expand its identity in interesting ways that keeps it all fresh.

That said, I'm not asking for every team to wear 20 combos, but limiting ourselves to 1 helmet, 2 jerseys, and 1-2 pairs of pants is just unnecessarily strict and arbitrary for a whole lot of teams. I see it much more similarly to how Baseball works now rather than College Football, where teams wear different color caps throughout the season that all compliment the identity in different ways.

Alternate helmet SHELLS for every team would suck. Additional shells for every team should only be for throwback purposes. However this leaves out the Dolphins, Ravens, Bengals, Texans, Chiefs, Raiders, Giants, Bears, Lions, Panthers, and Cardinals. These teams have basically worn the same color shell for practically their entire history. I feel like that could  become an issue logistically, even though I would love to see Bucco Bruce and Pat Patriot return.

It's just not worth it. The only team that I'd care to see an alternate helmet throwback from would be Tampa. The Buccaneers' current uniform is superior to the Buccos, but I'd still like to see those old orange ones maybe once a season. The other teams that get brought up as needing an alt helmet for throwbacks... namely Seattle and Philly... they just need to switch back to their old helmet colors full time. Seeing the Seahawks and/or Eagles wearing their massively superior old looks twice a year would just piss me off, and make me hate their current looks even more (if that's even possible with Seattle).

So the idea of opening the door to the possibility of even more mix-n-match chaos just to see the creamsicle Bucs every once in a while?  No thanks.

Your point about the mix-match chaos is 100% valid. BUT, I can think of a bunch of other teams that I would love a alternate helmet. For starters:

Rams (anything but their primary)

Cardinals (red helmet would be cool)

Titans (white)

Seahawks (gray)

Patriots

Buffalo (red)

And that's just off the top of my head.

My only hesitation is that I feel like the NFL helmet is sort of more sacred than the uniform. Maybe it was collecting them from the gumball machine when i was a kid or something. But it sort of takes away from how special they are if teams have more than one.

I think the last part of that is part of the reason for the “one helmet rule”. It’s about safety, ok sure, but there’s more to it than that. Part of it is an attempt to make the helmets have that “sacred” quality. Thats primarily why they didn’t let the Seahawks have a silver road helmet when they moved to the NFC.

I think you underestimate how many people think that would be fire/sick/clean/lit.

I guess I'm in the minority. I would rather see throwback uniforms be as accurate as possible. The Bucco uniforms would never work with pewter helmets, the Browns uniforms don't make sense with orange helmets, the Packers uniforms shouldn't have yellow helmets, etc.

If a team wants to wear an alternate helmet for 2-3 games a year, who cares? We've already seen several teams switch out facemask colors or decals. To me that's just an unnecessary change. The Bills or Jets saying hey look at us how cool we switched from gray to white facemasks for one game! or the Chiefs wearing a gray facemask and calling it a throwback uniform.

Yeah, I do. I have to remember that for every average person there is at least one out of two people dumber than that person. Dear God, I hope I don’t see the Chiefs wearing black. I saw those mock-ups all around the city that people bought at Wal-Mart growing up. Total coincidence it was always the People of Walmart variety of fan too that would drive a 92 Camaro covered in Hatchet Man stickers.

Let's all be clear - the "one helmet rule" was created by the NFL to avoid liability, full stop

well, kinda.

Before the current rule created to avoid liability, there was a one-helmet rule created to ensure uniform integrity.  When the Seahawks came out with their shades-of-gray uniform, they wanted home and road helmets but the NFL refused permission.
