NFL Changes 2021

The one helmet rule went into effect in 2013. Patriots wore throwbacks against the Jets in 2012.

The full ban on a second helmet shell came in 2013. Prior to that the league basically restricted it to throwbacks. The CTE thing was just a reason to push the restriction, which was already in place, even further.

No they haven't. Besides adding second alternate and increasing the amount of games both alternates can be worn to three, there haven't been any rule changes. The thing that has led to the massive increase in uniform combinations in the past decade was team realizing they could wear different pants and sock combinations. And neither of those are rule changes; the Bengals, Titans, and Falcons were all wearing multiple pants/sock combinations in the early to mid 2000s and teams jumped on that bandwagon progressively over time. In 2010, the Rams wore 7 different uniform combinations with only one throwback, and multiple teams had flirted with three different pants colors. I think what really set off the trend was the emergence of Oregon and the Seahawks as contenders in their mix-and-match Nike uniforms. Suddenly a lot more teams had three pants options where most had two prior.

Edit: Fouhy beat me to it

You literally said what the rule changes were.

Yes.

There are two one-helmet rules that consistently get conflated.

The first one-helmet rule requires teams to have one helmet for their home, road, and alternate uniforms.  The only exception was as part of a throwback uniform.

The second one-helmet rule removed the throwback exception in the name of player safety and restricted teams to one color shell for every game.

They are related but not the same.

Remember when the NFL used to mandate the amount of white sock players used to show?

Let’s not pretend uniform rules (and enforcement) haven’t significantly changed in the past decade-plus.

And the long slob shirts that create contrasting cummerbunds and sometimes even cover the player's butt.  Those wouldn't have been allowed back in the day.

I guess the "slope" started when they started allowing jerseys to be untucked as long as they had elastic at the bottom back in the early 00s.  For a while, it wasn't always obvious if someone's jersey was tucked or not because of how they were tailored.  Now, players want to look like dopes and wear t-shirts that just show off how untucked they are.  "Yo, man check me out - my shirt goes down to my butt!"  "Oh yeah?  Well mine goes all the way down to my knees!"  "Hold my beer... check this out - mine actually drapes on the ground.  Can't even see my shoes!"  Idiots.

So, what you're saying is, except for the two huge rule changes that opened up the floodgates, there haven't been any changes?  Got it.

WTH? Did you even think about that sentence when you wrote it?

Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

I did. But you clearly didn't read it. Yes, rule changes were made, but if people actually look at why teams are wearing more combinations, it has little do do with the rule change adding one game and one alternate. It has much more to do with wearing more pants and socks combinations, which was already beginning to happen a decade before the rule changes were put in place, which again, didn't affect whether or not teams could wear more pants and socks combinations.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

It's getting dangerously close to free agency/draft season with only the Bengals confirmed to be updating their uniforms at this point. How can teams like the Cardinals and Broncos still be content with wearing the same outdated garbage year after year for the past couple of decades? I pray that one of these teams announces something in the coming weeks.

Doesn't look like they're changing the number font nor the jersey design quite yet. Could be a tease before an unveiling...but...probably not.

Kinda odd it's hanging in front of a bunch of basketball unis at the customization shop.

I have a feeling Arizona makes the switch next year. They say it's usually a 2 year process and Kyler voiced is displeasure in their current uniforms last offseason. So I have a feeling they maybe started the process.

Simple. Same reason the Steelers and Cowboys look like absolute garbage. 🏆🏆🏆

This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone say the Steelers “look like absolute garbage.” Sure the one logo on the helmet is a quirk, and not everyone likes the italicized numbers but the uniform as a whole is one of the leagues best in its history.

For me, critiques of the Steeler's uniforms include:

- Jersey cut for players (outside of quarterbacks and kickers) creates issues with a interesting and historical striping pattern

- Yellow numbers outlined in black on the white jersey is difficult to read from distance

The one-sided helmet logo and italicized numbers never bothered me or looked out of place. Maybe not garbage, but could be a lot better.

their numbers are solid black for the away jerseys.

The name in the back is yellow outlined in black.
The italicized numbers looked sort of goofy compared to the throwback with the block font, like it’s some college team trying to be the Steelers(Iowa’s numbers look better)

The current Broncos don't appear to be having any luck with that look since Manning retired and their defense fell apart. I wouldn't put either of those teams in the same category as the Broncos, especially not Pittsburgh.
