NBA Expansion Looming: Seattle and Las Vegas or Vancouver

Vancouver would be my top choice for #32.  But Kansas City would be my second choice.  Followed by Las Vegas.  Among non Major League markets, I don't know. If Louisville didn't have their issues, I would put them ahead of Vancouver.

Honestly, Seattle should be a no brainer. New arena, good market, and the fact that the fans had their franchise ripped away from them should mean that expansion should focus there first.

I could see Las Vegas being the next most likely option. The fact that 2 major franchises have moved there in the past 5 or so years means that it can be a strong market, even though the impacts thrown at the city by Covid could be hard to measure immediately. However, its not like the NBA is completely new there. They host the NBA Summer League in Vegas, and there is a current WNBA franchise as well. It may only be a matter of time.

Other options I see as valid and possibly successful include Vancouver, Pittsburgh, St Louis, Kansas City or Louisville, but I think Seattle/Las Vegas may be too good for the NBA to pass up, at least in their eyes.

As for whether or not it would be successful as a concept, only time will tell. Interest in the NBA seems divided at best. I would just add a Seattle team at first and then sit back and see if adding another team on top of that would be a good idea.

I believe Kansas City has said they come out ahead without their arena having an anchor tenant because one would demand to gobble up all the ancillary revenue streams for themselves. They beat the game.

San Diego is an intriguing possibility, but not without shovels in the ground on a new arena, and I'm not sure they really have the black/libwhite alliance necessary for good NBA fandom. This is stupid, there aren't two good locations, just Seattle.

I believe the issue in Louisville is that the University of Louisville basketball team has primary tenant rights and the NBA squad would be second fiddle.

Seattle is a clear #1 and sadly I think Vegas is #2.  At least then you move Minnesota to the east

Not just that, the other one as well.....the social one.

Seattle is such an obvious choice it’s not even worth discussing. Honestly I think they could do a 31 team league for a few years. There’s a bunch of places for team n.32 but IMO the only really appetizing location is the wild card in Mexico City. The Louisville or Kansas City types add nothing to the league, I’d stay as far away from Las Vegas as possible, San Diego is an intriguing possibility as a possible warm weather free agent destination  (if only so Kawhi would have a team closer to home). I can’t see them adding 2 PNW teams, and Montreal... well they would need to take players on a crash course on the cities adult entertainment options before putting a team there.

We know the NBA has been pushing Mexico City for years, they were supposed to add a GLeague team there, and in terms of being far away from everything else is it much worse than Portland, currently? I actually think the altitude and attracting free agents would be bigger obstacles. It’s high risk high reward but the reward for a Mexico City team opening the whole Latin American market would be way higher than another team in the Midwest that needs to beyond through the draft because no one wants to go there.

Funny you should say that...

It will be Seattle (No brainer) and Vegas.

Vegas despite what is going on wont be an issue to fill. Casinos will always look for ways to take care of their patrons and comps are always welcomed. Same with all of the wheeling and dealing going on in that city. Shouldn't be an issue. Combine that with their growing population and arenas only being 18-20k. Shouldn't be an issue.

Don't be so sure:

A good salesperson will put all options on the table to keep the value up. Of course he wants to add value to Vancouver (or other cities). It just increases the demand and the more that they can get from expansion fees and that will then help the future owners in those cities with negotiating leases with those cities.

Adding Seattle and Vancouver, both teams that easily slot into the Northwest, allows the league to push Minnesota and New Orleans into divisions that make more geographical sense; the Wolves should be in the Central and the Thunder in the Southwest, those divisions are much more travel-efficient for those teams.

Vegas would be another Pacific team, which doesn't help the Wolves or Thunder at all.

Sure, but both Silver and his mentor said the same thing, I think the NBA recognizes bad ownership decisions doomed the Grizzlies.

it could be both. Terrible management in the 90's

And playing cities against each other now to get the highest bidder

I wouldn't read too much into his words.

I think expansion is a horrible idea right now.  It seems like this whole process may be getting rushed, only because the league is collectively losing their asses right now and is desperate for revenue.  We already have enough garbage basketball and don't need it watered down even more.

Let's not kid ourselves..it will come back.

Las Vegas is a convention town and conventions are finished -- the industry was waning before covid and that was the deathblow. There will still be boys' trips and bachelorette parties in Vegas, but businesses aren't going to underwrite them on the pretense of work anymore when you can just do a video call.

Would want Seattle and Vancouver.

Think it would be Seattle and Las Vegas.

Think Vancouver could be a successful NBA city for a number of reasons, but the expansion fee price tag I heard will be through the roof.  $2.5 billion USD.  The Aquilini family own Rogers Arena.  They have looked into trying to purchase a franchise a decade ago inquiring about the New Orleans Hornets.  However, 2 years ago Francesco Aquilini was saying the increased price for a franchise is now too rich for his blood.

It's a terrible, stupid, NHLesque idea. The league can't handle 32 teams. Great, another team that will exist in a perpetual rebuild because they only draft fourth overall instead of first and only three people on Earth per year enter the league knowing how to play professional basketball. Seattle should have had the team Oklahoma City has, Oklahoma City should have the team New Orleans has, and none of this should even be entertained.

This. 100%.

The NBA is the absolute last league that should contemplate adding franchises. There are already a half-dozen or more irrelevant franchises and, as @the admiral pointed out, nowhere near enough players of a quality that can make a difference for those teams. It’s ridiculous to even consider adding two more teams.
