2021-2022 NHL Jersey Changes

Add the blue stripe and they're there.

Apparently this is a relatively unpopular opinion, but the Caps' Screaming Eagle logo (and associated Capitol logo) are both terrible and have the bad kind of 90s stank on them.  Federal navy and gold? Yes I'm here for that. Everything else about that identity leave it in the past, locked in a drawer with the smelly underwear.

Colorado is switching to blue numbers on the aways.  And changing the name to burgundy.  Finally ditched the unnecessary black on the uniform!

Not sure about burgundy names, i think it would be better in blue, for television and all, but maybe i'm wrong. I'll wait to see it in action before making a judgment. But it's still a more than welcome change

I'd imagine blue names didn't show up as well on camera testing and that's why they've gone with burgundy; same reason the Wild scrapped that planned third they had.

I wouldn't have minded if they kept the silver outline on the numbers instead of burgundy, but this should improve the road set a lot.

I wonder if they'll also update the home numbers to be outlined in blue (matching the sleeve numbers on the road).

I guess mine's the unpopular opinion but I think they look worse now. The jersey itself needs more blue on it, not the numbers! Now IMO the numbers look as out of place as the pants did last season.

Honestly? Midtier for me. When it was released in 2007 many, many teams looked worse than that(13 by my count). They should have abandoned it a lot sooner, but it was nowhere near the worst when released.

Yeah I agree - there were a lot of ugly jerseys released between 2003-2015. This Flames jersey falls in the middle of that ugly group.

This is mid-tier?  Even if you discounted what are easily the most lazy and aesthetically inept shoulder patches in league history, you're still left 5 striping configurations competing for prominence on one jersey...  They couldn't even make the piping, that boxes in both the logo and numbers, consistent with the piping on the socks...  The socks that inexplicably mimic the German flag in spite of that colour order appearing nowhere else on the uniform.  This abomination deserves much more derision...

And the worst part is that it replaced their best look in the black era, too;

Calgary's aesthetics took an absolute nosedive in the Edge transition and they never fixed it for some godforsaken reason, even when so many other teams did get rid of their Edge-template jerseys for more traditionally-designed jerseys.

If they'd come out of the Adidas transition by bringing these jerseys back, I honestly don't know if the demand for the retros becoming the primary reaches the fever pitch it did.

Jerseys from 2003-2015 era that are worse then that Flames set:

The navy Buffalo set

The apron Avs

The blah Edge template sets for the Flyers, Senators, Penguins, Islanders

The t-shirt Predators

The navy checkerboard Predators

The mooterus

The Buffaslug

The tiny full script Ducks set in black, orange, and gold

The chrome Flyers

The navy Blues jersey, along with the Edge arch piping

The black and gold DALLAS jersey with numbers

The black Islanders alternate

Any jersey with front numbers

I honestly cannot envision a way that a team named the Coyotes could make their branding exclusive.  🤣

The whole idea of sports team branding is to exclude: this is my team and not yours, I am on this team and you are not.

The classic set is the best the Flames have ever looked and I’m glad they finally brought them back full-time (even if it should’ve happened 6-7 years ago).

I like the black Flames, but the 2004 red jersey should only be a third.

Maybe the Coyotes should brand themselves as the furry team. Acknowledge a growing percentage of the population with stuff that appeals to that demographic:

- fursuit contest

- furry subculture stuff (excluding the less savory stuff)

- Sonic the Hedgehog themed stuff (many furries love Sonic)

- furry art contests

- players commissioning area artists to draw incredibly graphic porn

- host a furry convention for the Southwest, with zero ban lists*

It’s fun and awful, just like the Coyotes franchise!

*every sane convention shares a ban list, preventing gross and disruptive people from attending. Rainfurrest didn’t follow this list, hence why it turned out like that.

Comparing jerseys Pre-2007 to Post-2007 is like comparing Apples to Oranges.  The implementation of the Edge template drastically changed the overriding aesthetic of the league.

Of the inaugural Edge jerseys you mentioned, only the Avs Apron gives the Flames competition for worst in class...  But even that set had the sense to not include a shoulder patch consisting primarily of colour found nowhere else on the uniform.

Absolutely.  They went from one of the league's best to bottom 3 in one season.

Agreed.  I think people just wanted the flag jerseys gone...  Although the Adidas template improved them slightly, by getting rid of the piping, the clash-patch still made them an eyesore.

The blue pants work with the maroon jersey because the mountains are blue. It flows well. The easiest solution would have been to go with maroon pants and gloves with the white jersey. At least that would create some consistency and they could have make the numbers maroon. As of right now the blue just seems forced. Better than black, but still forced and out of place.

You still gotta refill your fan base every year, by being inclusive toward potential new ones.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

Maybe this in unpopular, and I appreciate the effort, but the Avs changes don't address the real problem ... IMO this is a step BACKWARD.  The whole reason for black / grey in the original set was to separate the burgundy and blue.  Those colors are muddy whenever they're adjacent.   http://nhluniforms.com/Avalanche/Images/Avalanche04.png

If they insist on eliminating the black (except that they also insist on using an inferior shoulder logo which FEATURES black...), you've got to have a way to keep the burgundy from ever touching the blue.  Now instead of it happening on (a) the collar, (b) the side numbers and (c) between the road jersey and the breezers it also happens on (d) the back numbers (a huge area that is going to look muddy from a distance).

I'm sure it will look better when we see the full set. It's like the Montreal away jerseys. They're mostly red & white, but the blue numbers make the blue pants look less out of place.

@spartacat_12keep in mind MTL shades of red and blue (a) have way more contrast and (b) still are separated by white.  IMO that's what the Avs (sans black) need.  Below are 6 ways they could achieve that (3 different colors of breezers without and with grey).

dfOlfn1.png

I really like the options either on the left or the right where the arm yoke and hem match in color betweent the home and away set and also match the breezers. IMO that is the thing that would make their set more cohesive.  Currently, the hem/yoke goes from burgandy on the road to blue at home, so it throws the color balance off on the road set when the breezers went to blue.

Cool stuff thanks for posting

Speaking of this Wild jersey, did someone ever see the said jersey ?
