NFL Offseason 2021: Ride the QB Carousel of Horror

Brady’s deal is basically a one-year extension. You should know by now that years don’t mean anything in NFL contracts and are generally tacked on for cap reasons.

Cam stinks and there doesn’t seem to be any plan there. Doesn’t strike me as the type to be a willing “mentor” either.

I'm guessing Mahomes restructured in part because of the shrinking salary cap for 2021.  His cap hit was going to increase by $19 million while the cap is shrinking by $16 million or so.

I'm genuinely surprised by the Cam Newton news.  He looked wash and I can't imagine New England would have been worse with Stidham.

The Pats look desperate, NGL. For their sake, they better hope someone drops to them that they can have confidence in.

Otherwise? Enjoy the Mediocrity Trap. Not good enough to make noise in the playoffs or make them in the first place, not bad enough to get a shot at a great pick. It sucks and it sucks hard but man the Pats being the Forever .500s is neat karma.

I don’t see how the Patriots are “desperate”.

They’re in a fair position.

The defense is still in great shape, and will only get better with Hightower & Chung back.

They’re near the top in cap space so they’re in great shape to address other needs through free agency.

QB has always been a notoriously difficult spot to nail down, especially through the draft. Cam isn’t ideal, but there are far worse options. Actually a bonus since he’s coming so cheap.

Yeah, they won’t be a Superbowl team but depending on what happens, they could still be a decent team, fighting for the division.

I guess they were too effective during the Super Bowl for management's liking.

I mean, look at Dan Marino. He never won a ring, yet is still considered one of the top QBs of his era. Give him a ring, is the debate around him really that much different?

Tony Romo wasn't Dan Marino.

I served with Dan Marino.  I knew Dan Marino.  Dan Marino was a friend of mine.

Tony Romo - you're no Dan Marino.

Dan Marino was in Ace Ventura, puking at the thought of having sex with a transwoman. Tony Romo hasn’t even been in a horribly-dated Jim Carrey comedy!

Marino never slept with Einhorn  -- they only kissed -- for five long seconds.

Good move for The Patriots. Cam's a decent mentor/placeholder QB until they can get someone younger. Probably in the draft.

As for The Bucs, Brady legit going to be tearing up the league until he's 50 years old LOL.

So, the Bucs have NEVER given a second contract to a quarterback that they’ve drafted. And I think, if it’s even happened at all, they’ve only extend ANY quarterback on their roster maybe two or three total times. That’s how big of a thing this move is for the Bucs. Absolutely incredible that they have two Super Bowl wins while being that wholly inept at bringing in a quarterback.

But if you look at the contract structure with the voidable years, it's not really an extension at all.  It's designed specifically just to reduce cap hit with the understanding that the other years will be voided.  It's really not a big move - it's a nothing move.  Just accounting.

The stat about them having never extended anyone they've drafted is pretty amazing though.

Phillip Rivers: I am former Chargers quarterback who decided to retire.

Drew Brees: Hold my beer.

Yeah, but... how many people even remember Drew Brees as a Charger? 😄 Even now, I have to force myself to remember he was drafted by San Diego.

And while we're discussing obscure Charger trivia, I'd like to remind the people at home that if not for the deal SD pulled in that 2001 draft, we very easily could've been remembering Michael Vick as a former Charger. Instead, the draft deal netted them both Drew Brees and this other at-the-time-more-important guy by the name of LaDainian Tomlinson.  May not be known trivia, but how many other teams have drafted two Hall-of-Famers in the same draft--off the back of a draft-pick trade, no less?

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

Only the Chargers could do that and come away with nothing to show for it.
