The Angels are going to be screwed in the retired number department.  Vladimir Guerrero, inducted to the HOF as an Angel, had his number reissued to Mike Trout.

That, and 20 years later they've yet to retire any numbers from their championship team (Salmon, Anderson, Percival being the most deserving) whilst they retired numbers for Jim Fregosi (non-HOFer), Jimmie Reese, bench coach, and Gene Autry.

And any player that asks a guy who’s received that honor if he can wear his number should go to hell. Since they don’t care about taking awards away from old timers, why not just ask the guy if he can send you his MVP trophies and championship rings too?

Well, that's a bit much!  The players who ask for numbers that have been retired or semi-retired are typically players who have a connection to the player who has been honoured.  The Mets kept Willie Mays's number 24 in semi-retirement for decades until Rickey Henderson wore it with the approval of Mays, who knows Henderson well.  By contrast, when Henderson went to the Mariners, he did not request number 24, which had been vacated by Ken Griffey, Jr., as Henderson has no personal relationship with Griffey.

There are several instances of numbers being retired for two players.  The first such case dates back to before the retiring of numbers had become a common thing.  Bill Dickey wore the number 8 for the Yankees, and then it was given to Yogi Berra.  Eventually, the Yankees retired it in honour of both catchers.

Then there is number 31 with the Cubs, retired both for Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux.  The Expos retired number 10 in honour of both Rusty Staub and Andre Dawson.  (And shame on the Nationals for not recognising their own franchise's retired numbers.)  The Mariners are sure to retire number 51 for both Randy Johnson and Ichiro Suzuki.

So when the Angels retire number 27 for both Guerrero and Trout, that won't be anything so terrible.

Wait what?  He disappeared to me when he went to the Angels so I'm not sure, but wouldn't be be better known as an Expo?  I absolutely dreaded when the Phillies played the Expos because he was so good there for (what felt like) so long.

I think there was probably bad blood with Loria towards the end.  But, he does have a halo on his plaque.

Or Duane Haskins thinking he deserved Joe Theisman's number, Peyton Manning taking 18 in Denver, JJ Watt taking some dead guy's number in Arizona, Jerry Rice and Steve Largent, etc.

First of all, Rice wore Largent's number not through his own initiative, but on account of lies on the part of a Seahawk executive.

And Tripucka enthusiastically gave Manning his approval to wear his number.

So those examples do not support your contention.

But Goldberg's family and Theismann were more-or-less put on the spot; so I agree that the requests of Watt and Haskins were inappropriate.  Those guys should have followed the example of Joe Montana, who didn't even consider trying to get Len Dawson's number 16 upon joining the Chiefs.

Unretiring a number is like the honoree giving back a trophy, or withdrawing from the team's HOF or something.  I get the honored players not wanting to look like the bad guy, but once a team reissues a retired number, then the honor should be officially rescinded and the player be removed from wherever the numbers are displayed.  It is literally an award, and unretiring it is the same as giving back the award.

It's not "retired" unless it's "retired", and if I'm a team owner that put together a big event to honor a player that mean a lot to the team, I'd feel disrespected if that player eventually was like "nah, it's cool - you can have my number back."

I'm not saying Jerry Rice or Manning are buttholes or anything, but it shouldn't have even been an option for them.  If Joe Montana can wear 19, then Peyton Manning could have too.  At the end of the day, fewer numbers should be retired - lots of teams need higher standards.

Exceptions for family and real-close relations.

I’d probably agree with you, but he did win the AL MVP his first year with the Angels, fwiw.

Just looked up his stats on Baseball Reference and noticed that he wasn't a first-ballot HOF guy (only 71% on first ballot).  That's insane.  He was a player that was way better than just whatever his stats showed.  Similar in some ways to Dale Murphy, who IMO should also have been a 1st-ballot HOFer.

Yeah, I noticed that too (while confirming that his MVP award came with the Angels). The hall of fame is stupid anyway. It’s just an over glorified museum that has little issue with practicing revisionist history. Total joke of an institution.

Nolan Ryan should’ve been the first Angel, while Pudge would be the first Ranger.

The museum is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-level joke most of the time.

Wonder if Joe Flacco thinks he's still big-time enough to ask Donovan McNabb to unretire #5 for him.  Hoping he's not a big of enough dick to even ask.

The Unified Show: NFL’s One-Helmet Rule

March 25, 2021 - 14:47 PM

In this week’s episode of Unified, Chris Creamer and Paul Lukas explore the National Football League’s one helmet rule, why it exists, what we’ve lost because of it (or better yet, what we’ve been spared), and what could happen if/when the NFL allows multiple helmets again some day — which

They retired Mcnabb's number?  Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but for some reason I am.

They retired it (pretty soon after he retired), which is very strange because they never retired Ron Jaworski's, who while not as good, reached the same ceiling.  They retired Brian Dawkins in 2012, and I think the owner didn't want to hurt McNabb's fragile feelings so they did him in 2013.   Also weird is that they've held Randall Cunningham's 12 out of circulation since he left after '95, but it's not retired and there's no plans to retire it.
