NWSL Kits 2021

I don't see kits for Kansas City yet

Theyre in placeholder mode for 2021 so I wouldn’t worry much about that one.

They’re wearing a plain white teamwear kit (with mint green socks, at least) for the Challenge Cup:

Apparently this is the only kit that they’ll be wearing during the Challenge Cup, and the jerseys will be auctioned off after the tournament. Presumably they’ll have different home and away kits for the regular season, but I wouldn’t expect them to be much more exciting than these.

I'd expect Nike teamwear kits for this year. I actually like the placeholder logo, so they better improve on that when they come up with a final design. I ordered the Racing Louisville kits this morning, one for me and one for the kiddo. They were a little pricier than the other designs but they jump out at you and grab your attention so we had to get them.

Will KC deliver logo and kits by the regular season?

They already have the logo, which is a simple setup. I'd guess red uniforms for one kit and white for the other one, using a Nike teamwear uniform.

The logos at least are pretty nice for a temp brand. I like the simple modern treatment. Navy and turquoise and coral will be this era’s version of 90s teal and purple but that’s fine.

KC's colors on the jersey needs to be on the logo.  Colors are much brighter.  Mint and coral are much better than turquoise/teal and red.

Any news on the Red Stars? I know they're due for a new home kit, but honestly wouldn't mind if they just keep the set they have right now as it's ideal for any Chicago team. Would be interesting to see what they come up with though especially since the league kits overall are getting way better.

NWSL Club Sets Sights on New York with ‘Gotham FC’ Rebrand

April 11, 2021 - 16:42 PM

To paraphrase Frank Sinatra: If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. And one National Women’s Soccer League club has decided to try and make it in New York. Earlier this week, Sky Blue FC of the NWSL announced a complete rebrand. They are now

So here’s my problem with the Reign branding: Olympique Lyonnais is not a strongly recognized brand in the US. “OL” is asking people to take it a step further and recognize an acronym for a brand that isn’t strongly recognized.

Perhaps a more significant issue is that the branding now has next to nothing to do with the region, other than “reign” being a soundalike with “rain”. And the fact that the Reign are an established franchise in the area. But this current branding feels like ownership could just pick it up and move it anywhere, anytime. Maybe they want to.

A better compromise in my mind would be to use “Olympique” since this is still the closest NWSL franchise to the Olympic mountains, regardless of whether they play in Tacoma or Seattle. Olympique Reign sounds kind of silly but at least reconciles the two brands better. Olympique Tacoma or Olympique Seattle could also work although I’m sure it would spark unnecessary debate over which city can lay a stronger claim to the team.

Meanwhile OL Reign will just get read as Ol’ Reign by many. I don’t know, it’s acceptable in the end, but it just irks me.

Lyon is well known in women's football because of how they've dominated the women's game in Europe. The biggest issue fans of Reign FC had however is the same one you have, about being able to simply move the team without a rebrand. Also, the current manager had issues with Lindsey Horan when she played at Lyon, making remarks about her weight and how she trained.

I get what you're saying about the brand not being region specific, which is a good point. I'm less bothered by the use of OL. I think soccer fans by now have grown accustomed to names affixed with some sort of initialed prefix or suffix, like AC, FC or SC, that this won't stand out much, nor be an inhibitor. Sure, the OL may require explanation, but it's not a terribly complicated thing to explain. And the smartest thing U.S. pro soccer leagues have done in the past decade is market themselves to soccer fans -- who are less likely to require an explanation -- than Americans they're trying to convert into soccer fans.

Not a super thrilling rebrand but the logo and now the jerseys at least have a solid color scheme and don’t look cheapo. And doing the photo shoots on that one instagrammable block in DUMBO. An overnight shift to actual professionalism for this team.

New Jersey/New York New York FC will look pretty good this year.

They've already started chopping off NJ/NY, as expected.

This was Week 1, but I've seen Gotham used in place of NJ/NY since.

And yet, this was last night.

Looks like the only thing they've chopped off is the slash.

And if you look at the team's website, they're really leaning into it.

NJ/NY Gotham FC Moves to the Top of the Eastern Division in Thrilling Win Over North Carolina Courage

They use the three letters for game stats:

Quote

Stats Summary: NJY / NCC
Shots: 15 / 15
Shots on Goal: 6 / 5
Saves: 2 / 2
Corner Kicks: 5 / 7
Fouls: 7 / 13
Offside: 5 / 0

Misconduct Summary:
NJY – Jennifer Cudjoe (caution) 86’

So no, I'm not sure we can say they're ditching the place identifiers.

Tony Parker, who is part owner, has said he wants to move the team to Miami.
