The helmets will be a matte black shell with gloss orange decals that make it almost indiscernible to casual uniform fans from the previous ones but also make it possible to swap them for white stripe decals for the color rush. I’m calling it now.

Even casual fans would notice that difference, fortunately that's not going to be the case.

If they could pull that off seamlessly, that’d be pretty sweet. Be tough to pull off though.

We're gonna forget Kenny Anderson?

I love a two-bar facemask.

Considering all of the failed attempts at trendy modernizations we've seen in recent years, I'm reminded of just how innovative this look was when it was first unveiled in 1981. It seems relatively simple compared to what we've seen in the modern era, but the immersive tiger stripe helmet, with the same pattern applied to the shoulders and pants stripe was revelatory. The only uniform at the time that I'd consider a contemporary was the Chargers, and that uniform took years to evolve. (There was a period in the '70s when they still wore simply-striped yellow pants before placing the bolt on them.)

And I can't think of a uniform transition that resulted in such a dramatic and effective upgrade from its predecessor than this Bengals set. Looking back, I'm somewhat nostalgic for the '70s Bengals uniforms, but only for the simplicity of them. That's why I'm hoping the team opts for something that embraces the innovation of its past, but not over adorned.

I've said it before, but my hope would be for a very clean and simple uniform - white numbers with simple orange piping around the collar and the sleeve cuffs... and no tiger stripes.

No tiger stripes, I know -- blasphemy! But hear me out. The problem with all of the Bengals uniforms since the 80s has been that the uniforms tried competing with the helmet for attention instead of simply letting the helmet be the centerpiece of the identity.

Here are some examples of teams with helmets that are allowed to be the focal point and complimented by the uniform:

Now here's what happens when those same teams tried to have uniforms that competed with the helmet for the viewer's eye:

Granted - those are some ugly uniforms in their own right - but just take a moment as you scroll through those images and take note of where you find your eye being drawn. While the Bengals uniforms have mostly been better than the ones I shared above, they all fall on the busy side of the spectrum. If you have tiger stripes on the helmet AND on the jersey AND on the pants, there's simply too much going on. Even the stripe-less original helmet *pops* more than the striped version because it's not in competition with the rest of the uniform

The helmet is awesome enough on its own to be the crown jewel of the identity. Let it shine.

I'll say that the Chargers didn't look great when they deemphasized the bolt from their uniform. And their uniform would have looked worse if they had taken the bolts off the jersey.

But even in the above picture you posted, the uniform looks unfinished and bare. The tiger stripes, when done correctly, unify the uniform and makes sure the jersey is not an afterthought. Tiger stripes are the essence of the Cincinnati Bengals—and they should never shy away from that.

Any team with a ballsy online staff ought to do this on April 1 next year.

They should release a revamped version of the browns style bengals uniforms April 1st and say they’re the new uniforms lol

Washington has a pretty funny social media staff. They should reveal the helmet stripes are coming back, but with unnecessary slashes along with the helmet numbers now have a diagonal slash as well as being offset

They could use the "CB" logo.

If their social media was really ballsy, on April 1 they'd announce that they selected the new name and it's "Savages", and have a helmet with Wahoo holding a football as the logo, giant tomahawks on the shoulders, and a casino-themed secondary logo.

The stadium is being renamed the FedEx Teepee.  The burgundy remains unchanged.

The sad thing is... the helmet horns were the BEST thing about the entire rebrand.

Agreed.  Still a downgrade but not the worst element.

But does the helmet have stripes?

Yes, but the Atlanta Braves old savage logo is printed all over them, like the Seahawks stripe and how the Browns used to have that carbon-fiber effect.

I agree that less is more. I'm not sure about having nothing at all and just using the leaping tiger on that arms. Minimal striping would definitely be a step up above their previous looks. It depends what they go with.

I personally prefer the late-'90s update. The tiger stripes on the originals are a bit too thin and end up looking more like a wood-grain pattern.

You're so right. The 81 look is so dated and tacky to me, largely because the stripes look like ripped paper (I also hate old style stripes that get pinched in the armpit). I still prefer the modern shoulder stripes, but a modern template with the thicker stripes a la late-90s would be acceptable.
