The new identity is inspired by the recreational opportunities available to water sports enthusiasts on the rivers in and around Elizabethton - particularly on the Watauga River, which flows by just beyond Joe O'Brien Field's outfield fence. Is Rookie supposed to be some kind of sasquatch? Tubing, fishing, and playing baseball all at the same time is Poochie-level bizz-ay. This logo really needs a keyline, though: The gold fishing line disappears on the gold background and the whole thing is lost. Viquesney's 'The Spirit of the American Doughboy' on display in 38 states, including eight statues within the Appalachian League's geographic footprint of North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Of those eight, just one is in Tennessee and/or an Appalachian League market - the statue outside of TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City. Said statue was purchased by American Legion Kings Mountain Post #24 and presented to Johnson City and Washington County in a dedication ceremony on November 11, 1935. The statue has since been rededicated twice - on November 11, 1974 and August 30, 2013 - and stands at the entrance to Johnson City's Memorial Park, a recreation area that includes the aforementioned ballpark, an amphitheater, community center, fitness center, senior center, swimming pool, and tennis courts. The name references the fact that Tusculum Field - an airport that served the region from 1948 through 1968 - was situated on land adjacent to the site of the ball club's current home venue, Pioneer Park. It's clearly meant to play to the locals. After all, the team's GM must have known when making "the strong history of patriotism" remark that it wasn't going to get much play outside of the league and region. The Appalachian League is confined to a fairly small geographic footprint: four states, ten cities, with five of the host communities all within the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area. The odds of anyone from outside that immediate region hearing said statement, let alone being insulted by it, are slim. Hell, I'm the type of sports branding enthusiast who manages to be amongst those few souls who are the exception to said rule and I don't find it either particularly patronizing or insulting. The name references the role that Daniel Boone and a team of axmen played in blazing a trail from Tennessee's Long Island of the Holston through the Cumberland Gap of Virginia and into Kentucky.
