Elizabethton's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the River Riders. The new identity is inspired by the recreational opportunities available to water sports enthusiasts on the rivers in and around Elizabethton - particularly on the Watauga River, which flows by just beyond Joe O'Brien Field's outfield fence. Front and center on both the team's primary league logo and alternate logo is Rookie, the mascot of Elizabethton's Appy League team since 2005.

Appy League introduces Elizabethton River Riders

February 3, 2021 - 21:57 PM

The Elizabethton River Riders are the fourth of ten new identities in the works for Appalachian League teams. The team announced its new identity, which was created in house by Major League Baseball, this morning. The nickname draws on the affinity that residents of Elizabethton, Tennessee, have for recreating on

The new identity was inspired by a statue - The Spirit of the American Doughboy - that sits just behind the team's home stadium, TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

This is a nice sentiment and source for inspiration, but these statues were mass-produced in the 1920’s and are found all over the country.

The nicknames are really good so far, the logos serviceable and much better than I feared.

Is Rookie supposed to be some kind of sasquatch?  Tubing, fishing, and playing baseball all at the same time is Poochie-level bizz-ay.

This logo really needs a keyline, though:

The gold fishing line disappears on the gold background and the whole thing is lost.  That's gotta be a mistake.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. currently lists 159 of artist E.M. Viquesney's 'The Spirit of the American Doughboy' on display in 38 states, including eight statues within the Appalachian League's geographic footprint of North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Of those eight, just one is in Tennessee and/or an Appalachian League market - the statue outside of TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City.

Said statue was purchased by American Legion Kings Mountain Post #24 and presented to Johnson City and Washington County in a dedication ceremony on November 11, 1935. The statue has since been rededicated twice - on November 11, 1974 and August 30, 2013 - and stands at the entrance to Johnson City's Memorial Park, a recreation area that includes the aforementioned ballpark, an amphitheater, community center, fitness center, senior center, swimming pool, and tennis courts.

Notwithstanding the presence of 158 other mass-produced doughboy statues on display elsewhere in the country, it strikes me that the 85-year presence of Johnson City's copy of the statue, its proximity to the ballpark that the municipality's Appalachian League team calls home, and the fact that the city's earliest minor pro baseball teams were named the Johnson City Soldiers for ten seasons - including nine in the Appalachian League - make the adoption of the Johnson City Doughboys identity particularly apropos.

Greeneville's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the Flyboys. The name references the fact that Tusculum Field - an airport that served the region from 1948 through 1968 - was situated on land adjacent to the site of the ball club's current home venue, Pioneer Park. Additionally, it is meant to honor the strong history of patriotism in the area.

I can't tell if that's more patronizing to the Greeneville area or insulting to absolutely everywhere else in the country.

It's clearly meant to play to the locals. After all, the team's GM must have known when making "the strong history of patriotism" remark that it wasn't going to get much play outside of the league and region. The Appalachian League is confined to a fairly small geographic footprint: four states, ten cities, with five of the host communities all within the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area. The odds of anyone from outside that immediate region hearing said statement, let alone being insulted by it, are slim. Hell, I'm the type of sports branding enthusiast who manages to be amongst those few souls who are the exception to said rule and I don't find it either particularly patronizing or insulting. It's standard marketing-speak... nothing more, nothing less.

Greenville Flyboys take off in Appalachian League rebrand

February 4, 2021 - 23:31 PM

We’re halfway through a parade of ten Appalachian League rebrands, with the fifth announcement in four days coming today: The erstwhile Greenville Reds are now the Greenville Flyboys, a tribute to a historic airfield that existed on the site where the team’s stadium stands now. “Pioneer Park, Tusculum University, literally

Standard marketing speak and patronizing go hand in hand.

Also, given the tendency of white nationalist cultists to exploit the word and concept of patriotism, the decision to even go there in the first place feels all sorts of icky.

The excitement surrounding the rebranding of Pulaski’s baseball franchise culminated today with the unveiling of the organization’s new name: The Pulaski River Turtles.

With a nod to its New River Valley heritage, the inspiration behind the River Turtles name was a renewed commitment to Calfee Park’s family-friendly culture.

“When considering the name, we weighed feedback from the local baseball community, Calfee Park’s history, and our location in the New River Valley,” says general manager JW Martin. “After thoughtful consideration, we wanted a brand that represents what our ballpark is really all about. We have a welcoming, fun, family environment that puts smiles on faces. We think this brand captures that.”

Just as the world of baseball branding is set to lose one turtle-themed brand, another is introduced. We know that the Single-A Beloit Snappers will have a new name in 2021, but as of this morning, the collegiate level Appalachian League gives us the Pulaski River Turtles. “When considering the

Appy League’s Kingsport Axmen pay tribute to Daniel Boone

February 5, 2021 - 18:15 PM

In 1775, Daniel Boone and 35 axmen began clearing the forests of eastern Tennessee, in what would later become the town of Kingsport, to create the Wilderness Road, one of two major routes used by western settlers at the time. Since then, portions of the trail have been preserved in
