You want the worst team in the AL to trade for guys that are going to be free agents in 3 months?

Absolutely. It would actually giveĀ fans a reason to willingly pay to go to games.

Ā

A friend of mine went to a game earlier this season when COVID restrictions were still heavily enforced and an usher told him there was literally zero difference between those COVID games and any regular game the Orioles play. The sad part is that is absolutely true. Thereā€™s nothing to root for in Camden Yards. Itā€™s a bottomless vortex of misery and has been for quite some time. Itā€™s the main reason why I think the team needs to fast track Adley Rutschman as well as other minor leaguers, including Cal Ripkenā€™s son, Ryan into the majors solely to sell tickets and get fans excited again. This ā€œrebuildā€ has no end in sight.

The Tribune didn't run the Cubs with this much soullessness. To whichever Lake Forest WASPs were in the boardroom at any given moment, the Cubs were just an inexpensiveĀ TV show that was on between Regis & Kathie Lee and Dawson's Creek, yet in overseeing this team they still managed not to be asĀ contemptuous of their audience as the Rickettses are.Ā  Maybe they'll trot out their pet lesbian to explain how the money they've saved by trading three star players in 24 hours will go to diversity initiatives and definitely not paying down debt on gastropubs no one went to or covering for betting on the wrong presidential candidate.Ā

Today was worse than any loss I've ever experienced as a lifelong Cubs fan. The core of players who brought us fans so much joy in 2016, completely ripped apart in a matter of hours. Ugh. Sports aren't supposed to hurt THIS much. šŸ’”

Iā€™m so sorry, Cujo. I loved seeing that 2016 team and seeing them fall apart over the years has been really frustrating. They shouldā€™ve at least been to another World Series. Instead, we got the slow decline ending in today.

Ā

I love having Bryant as a Giant, but Iā€™m disappointed that the 2016 Cubs died like this.

Yeah, Cubbies are good in my book. Iā€™m glad that core at least brought them one title. Youā€™ve always got that.

Ā

Also, Iā€™m so sorry this isnā€™t happening to the Dodgers instead.Ā

I was a Cubs fan until the off season of 2010 (I should really link to that other thread about quitting a team). SOMETHING happened in the offseason that year. I am pretty sure that the team signed a horse's butt to their starting rotation and sold it like it was the best thing ever. I said 'eff it. If they don't care, why should I?'

Ā

I took a year off of having a favorite team in 2011 so as to not appear to bandwagon the Brewers (in case they turned it around). They did. I declared myself a Brewer fan after the 2011 season and haven't looked back. My ex-wife still can't fathom that I wasn't happy for the 2016 Series win. I was happy for friends of mine who are Cubs' fans, but no joy for me.

Ā

It sucks that this is happening to you and your favorite team. I take joy in seeing it happen to the Cubs, but not to fans of the team that I "know" or know.

It's where I sit.

Winning the World Series is the worst thing the Cubs have ever done. They used to have an identity. "Lovable losers" may not seem like an epithet to aspire to, but it gave them a unique aura that set them apart from other sad sack franchises like Seattle.Ā  There was something special about the Cubbies. It turns out that the eternal hope and anticipation that someday, somehow, they may finally win one was so much more fun than their actually winning the one. Now they're just another one-and-done having a fire sale. Irrelevance, 108 years in the making.

I'm sure their fans in Chicago that got to celebrate and have a parade feel like winning one was more fun than the eternity of futile attempts.

I wasn't talking about what aĀ fan of the team would want.

So WHO were you talking about?

Ā

Baseball in general. The game lost one of its cornerstones. The Cubs were the ultimate team to be sympathized withā€”the hard-luck good guys who were often good enough but could never catch a break. Not many teams get to lose all the time and still be considered a premier franchise. Their stubborn refusal to win, combined with theirĀ day games and overall Harry CaraynessĀ gave them a unique identity. That's gone now.Ā  TheĀ storyline of "can they ever win it?" is gone, and it was infinitely more intriguing than whatever the franchise is now.Ā Ā If this fire sale is a sign of things to come, the Lovable Losers will just be the Losers, and Baseball will beĀ worse for it.

Who cares about any of that? Being known for heartbreak alone only gets you so far. Pitiable ā‰  lovable.

Baseball isnā€™t worse off for having no ā€œlovable losers.ā€ The Guardians, Pirates, Orioles, Rangers, and Mariners can be our new lovable losers. The Guardians donā€™t have to worry about an off-putting name, while Nutting and Angelos keep the Bucs and the Oā€™s irrelevant. The Rangers are the oldest expansion team without a title (and play in a tuff shed), while the Mariners have never won a pennant. Ā Granted, any of these teams could turn it around with new owners.Ā
Ā

You become ā€œlovable losersā€ through bad ownership and later ownership trying to market off of that to avoid investing into the on-field product.

Did that apply toĀ the Red Sox too?Ā

The Cubs being off channel 9 and onto a low-budget RSN has hurt their character more than winning the World Series did. They pushed Len Kasper out the door when they hired some Noo Yawk blowhard from the YES Network who insists on making broadcasters wear suits because that's what the Yankees would do. Now the telecasts are generic as hell and you can never tell who's working the game, another proud YES tradition.

i have a sunday plan with the Orioles. I'm not about to renew it. Perhaps if the team was better, but too sad right now.
