I figure one thing, the only thing more fitting at this point would be a movie about that time back in 2010 that Bahrain wound up playing a real match against a fake Togo national team.

Maryland public schools voted to open up the playoffs to every team in the state this season to combat against any COVID related cancellations.

  • every team in the state makes the playoffs regardless of how they perform in regular season
  • there will be 2 new classifications this season, so there will ultimately be 6 state champions for the 2021 season instead of the usual 4

That's the same thing Iowa did last season to combat any issues from COVID-19.

Ohio did the same, but some of those teams that weren't playoff worthy opted out and played other teams instead to try and get that elusive first win of the season.

Time for an update on my end.

Washington - Tonight is the final night of the regular season with the big game here being the 'Civil War' game between Mark Morris and R.A. Long. The Monarchs have already clinched a playoff berth and will head into next weekend's crossover round against W.F. West while R.A. Long is already eliminated and are looking to spoil the good mood for Mark Morris.

In other regional action...

*Castle Rock at La Center - In what has become tradition at this point, these two teams meet for the 1A Trico championship. The Wildcats tend to get the better of the Rockets, though

*Kalama vs. South Umpqua (OR) - Kalama was supposed to play Toutle Lake, but the Ducks.. well, ducked out of the game and forced the Chinooks to reschedule this game. In comes the Number 1 team at the 3A level in Oregon - South Umpqua. The Lancers play a similar style of offense, so expect fireworks here.

*Toledo vs. Pe Ell/Willapa Valley [Monday] - The 2B crossover round begins on Monday as the Riverhawks and Titans meet in a play-in game of sorts with the winner going on to play the winner of the 2B Northwest League in the crossover round next weekend

Oregon - Rainier leads their division by a half game and can seal it with a win tonight over Corbett. Clatskanie has totally fallen apart and looks to end the season on a high note against Blanchet Catholic.

Quick update..

Washington - The crossover round begins Monday with Toledo taking on Pe Ell/Willapa Valley on a neutral site with the winner moving on to play the 2B Northwest League champion in a winner to State game. Outside of that, the actual State tournament begins next weekend with 3A, 2A, and 1A having 16 team fields while 2B and 1B having 12 team fields.

Oregon - Rainier earned the number 2 seed in the 3A State Tournament and opens the first round with 15th seed Nyssa. The winner here moves on to play against either Sutherlin or Vale in the quarterfinals.

Anything you need to know about the Maryland State playoffs can be found in the link below.  Main point, every team in the state participates in the playoffs the season to counter against any COVID related cancellation they may have occured.

Louisiana finished week 10 yesterday, and the playoffs are set to commence Thursday night. The brackets would typically be released today - the Sunday after completion of the regular season. However, the LHSAA announced a delay in releasing the brackets until tomorrow due to “an emergency appeal by at least one school.”

Playoff brackets are set based on team power ratings which award points based on your wins, your win-loss %, your opponents’ win-loss% and you opponents’ classification (i.e. teams are awarded bonus points for playing teams from a higher classification). This season has seen an excessive amount of penalties handed out by the LHSAA resulting in a LOT of forfeits - more than I can ever remember.

Apparently, the LHSAA compliance officers have started to interpret the language on how to calculate academic eligibility different than in prior years and are penalizing schools for calculating eligibility as they have for many previous years. Just this past week, 3 more schools were forced to forfeit games from the first 9 weeks of the season. The result are teams being shuffled around the power ratings with some gaining points for forfeit wins while others losing points because an opponent’s win-loss % was significantly impacted negatively.

As an example, my alma mater would have been in the top-16 teams in Class 5A and would be hosting a playoff game. However, an opponent we beat was forced to forfeit 4 wins which dropped us to 21 in the power ratings and may result in a first round away game over 330 miles away in the extreme northwestern part of the state.

it’s completely insane….we’ve seen nothing like this before.

That doesn't make sense.. isn't there like a neutral site for the game that could have both teams meet halfway?

Anyhow, in my neck of the woods..

Washington - The first round of playoffs are now set. 4A, 2A and 1A have no teams in my local area, so they'll be skipped.

-3A: Kelso drew the 14th seed after winning the opening round game against Auburn Riverside and gets the 3rd seed in O'Dea. The Fighting Irish routed the Hilanders in 2019, 35-0, in the last game between these two schools. The winner of this game advances to play the winner of the game between 11th seed Spanaway Lake and 6th seed Kennewick.

-2B: Kalama and Toledo both made the field and end up in the same quarter of the bracket as the Chinooks are the number 1 seed and gets a first round bye (Both 2B and 1B have 12 team fields) and awaits the winner of this weekend's game between Toledo and Davenport.

-1B: Naselle made the field yet again and is the 5th seed and will host 12th seed Waterville-Mansfield in the 1st round. Winlock also got in and, for the first time since 2002 (when the school was in 1A), the Cardinals are in the state tournament. They're the 11th seed and opens with 6th seed DeSales.

Oregon - Rainier opened their playoffs in the 3A level with a convincing win over Nyssa in Kelso (The home field for Rainier was in very poor shape thanks to previous games played there and the recent weather). Next up for the Columbians is 7th seeded Vale on Friday (Site hasn't been determined yet, but I'm going to guess they may play this one in Kelso as well).
