College athletes may now receive money for name & likeness

Universities play up the "oh look we're barely getting by financially" aspect by dumping the money into facilities and coaching salaries. We're going to see they same or similar financial reports except it won't be "we don't have much in profits but look at our new football-only facility," it'll be "we have to pay our mercenaries."

As sponsorship rules/laws get more lax, we'll see more money being dumped into college sports. As much as some say "I'll never watch if they pay the athletes," those people are the vast minority and most of them won't follow through. With more and more states legalizing sports gambling, we'll see more schools follow Colorado's lead and partner with sportsbooks/casinos. There's never going to be a shortage of money being spent on marketing/advertising gambling entities.

  • CS85 changed the title to College athletes may now receive money for name & likeness

Starting today, NCAA athletes can be sponsored, make money in their name and likeness, and the deals have been happening EVERYWHERE today.  Good for them.  The NCAA, as expected, is not sure how to handle it at all.

Andrew Brandt lays that last one out there as if it is supposed to be a problem!

There's been a handful of contemptuous takes out there.

It's devoid of any further context like a headline or the accompanying article so I genuinely don't understand that criticism of the Miami graphic, how that reads as "greedy", or how that even suggests the players are greedy. You have to go out of your way to ascribe that intention to the subtext to fit that interpretation. I think it's far less involved and just a statement that they finally earn money on their own names. I don't see what's wrong with it.

Now would be the perfect time to reinstate the records of Reggie Bush and others like him.

For Bush, since it was he AND his parents that were receiving inducements, I don't think he should get his records back. For the Ohio State players, who sold items they earned, I'd like to see them get those records back. Heck, that 2011 Penn State game technically didn't exist at one point dur to the PSU coverup but it's part if Penn State's records now, just not Ohio State's.

If players can be compensated, does the NCAA even have a reason to exist anymore?

Someone has to run tournaments still. Or maybe SUM can take over since they are splitting with US Soccer.

Dabo Swinney said he'd quit coaching if players could profit off their images and likenesses.

Time to see if he's a man of his word.

According to some of his players he's on board. The guy makes Harvey Dent look like Janus.

But, the non-Power 5 just won't pay their players much if anything. How will that change things? It isn't like the Power 5 schools will suddenly have rosters that are twice as big as before. If they're already paying under the table, this just gets it above-board.

Good for the athlete-students. It isn't the deathknell that it seems to be among some of you, IMO.

These endorsement deals will come about in other ways than just big-name sponsorship and/or advertisements--and even in the non-power 5 levels, as well.

Like this guy...

That's Jackson State's Antwan Owens, believed to be the first college athlete to sign one of these NIL deals.  Story here.  (Bet some of y'all thought the first would be at a power-5, didn't ya? 😉)

All the teams out there to make a graphic with and they chose Miami???  Maybe whoever did it just liked the colors...

I'm sure a booster reminded him they've been getting paid, they just don't report it on the boosters' taxes.

When the Panthers said they wanted to dabble in NIL, I figured it would be D'Eriq. He's the only player in any sport with the level of fame at Miami to make it worth it. No one would turn out to see the Hurricanes' ace and eat his Fastball Fries or whatever.
