NFL Uniforms Interesting Facts

Recommended Posts

This is a thread for the purpose of what the title says, interesting facts. Facts that are well known or not as known.  Everything related to uniforms/jerseys in the NFL. I'll start things off.

6 teams do not retire jersey numbers; The Cowboys, Falcons, Jaguars, Raiders, Ravens, and Texans. The Ravens haven't retired a number even though Ray Lewis and Ed Reed have made the HOF. The Jaguars seem to be waiting on Tony Boselli to make the HOF. This year, 2021, the Giants will retire Eli Manning's number, 10. The Chicago Bears and New York Giants have the most retired numbers of all teams, with 14 numbers each.

With the Packers having an all green throwback, they join many teams who have worn a monochrome color look. Green Bay hasn't worn all solid colors since the 1950s.  The Eagles were the first team to wear monochrome colors, all green, in the Super Bowl era, during the 1997 season. In 2001 the Saints wore all black. Then in 2002 the mono-colors became a trend. 3 teams have not done monochrome colors; the Cowboys, Giants, and Raiders.

Every team has worn a third jersey outside of league wide promotions such as the NFL 75th anniversary in the 1994 season,  AFL 50th anniversary in the 2009 season, NFL Color Rush Thursday night games from 2015-2017,  or Thanksgiving day games, with the exception of the Kansas City Chiefs.

These are it for now. I have more that I can save for afterwards. Feel free to share something you have in mind.

What do you mean the chiefs have never worn an alternate uniform, they have worn their Dallas Texans uniforms plenty of times when not an anniversary year or what ever.

When’s the last time the Chiefs wore the Dallas Texans uniform?

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

2009 admittedly long time but not an anniversary year.

It was the AFL anniversary and franchise’s 50th year.

When did the Chiefs wear the Dallas Texans jerseys before 2009?

They also wore a version of it in 2019. They wore it for the Super Bowl iv

But they never reached the Super Bowl as the Dallas Texans. How do you consider the throwback they wore in 2019 to be a Dallas Texans throwback?

I know you specified Super Bowl era. But I always like to point this one out as the last worn monochrome prior to the resurgence. 1964

Not that I can see. They haven't worn the Dallas Texans throwback other than the 2009 season. The gray facemask KC wore against the Vikings in 2019 is only one part of an older style of uniform, but not the whole thing. The Chiefs have not worn a third jersey outside of games that have something that is a league promotion. Even if you count the NFL Color Rush that the league mandated for a couple years, this is the case.

To be fair, no one has since worn these 1st Ballot HOF players' numbers since they retired: LT Jonathan Ogden (#75), ILB Ray Lewis (#52) & FS Ed Reed (#20). Additionally, 2 surefire future homegrown HOF draftees, 'Hybrid' OLB / DE Terrell Suggs (#55) & RG Marshal Yanda (#73) have not been issued either.

Another number unofficially retired long ago is legendary BALTIMORE Colts iconic QB, Johnny Unitas (#19). Albeit when he was still alive, one player was given permission to use those digits by Johnny 'U' himself: QB Scott Mitchell.

No one before or since ever had the guts to even ask during a short stint span of six years prior to his death, and of course no one since he passed — no pun intended — has sported said numerals.

One time, I even saw & heard then-active WR Keyshawn Johnson remark that #19 was of such importance to him to the extent that a place like B'more, for instance, could never be a considered destination for him, due to the Ravens' (unofficial) retirement of it, which he cited via directly mentioned reference.

So the Chiefs have never worn alternates except the times they wore alternates? 😛

Dallas won't retire numbers but 8, 12 and 22 are pretty much just that.  The 88 thing is weird to me.  It should be right beside the other iconic numbers in "retirement"but has taken on a life of its own.

They truthfully should’ve retired 9 after Romo hung up his cleats. Sure, they kept it out of circulation for a couple years only to give it to a guy who they ended up cutting this season.

Why, what did romo ever do to deserve his number being retired? He led a bunch of 8-8 teams, rarely made the playoffs, when he did he’d get eliminated early other than one year when Dez dropped it.
