MLS Kits 2021

LAFC kit dropping Sunday the 28th.

With the sponsor, it'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Based on the leaks it looks better on the home kit than the YT-TV logo, so at least in principle I'm not against it, though I was still hoping for Tesla.

Also, the stadium is still Banc of California branded even though the deal ended early. Wonder how that'll go. "Tesla Field" doesn't sound too bad, but it'll always be The Banc.

The Seattle Sounders are set to launch their latest away jersey on Thursday. When they do, they’ll have some distinctly Northwest flair on their sleeves.

The Sounders introduced the Puyallup Tribe as the Official Casino and Entertainment Partner of the team in a multi-year partnership on Tuesday. Highlighting the partnership, the team’s primary kit will feature the EQC logo, while the secondary kit sleeve will showcase the Puyallup Tribe’s official emblem, “a nod to the tribe’s impactful Coast Salish traditions,” according to a release from the team. The partnership will continue through 2027.

While the terms of the agreement were not made public, it is believed to be worth at least $1 million a year. This replaces the WaFd sleeve sponsorship the Sounders announced last July.

Well, I'm not a fan of having a sleeve ad, especially a casino ad like on the home jerseys, but the Puyallup Tribe logo on the away jersey's sleeve is by far the best news about Sounders jerseys I've heard in a while. There's no text, and it's not even a company; it's just such a perfect thing to represent the Puget Sound region and its inhabitants.

I know it'll probably never happen, but I think the Puyallup Tribe logo would make the nicest primary sponsor we've ever had.

Anyways, hopefully our upcoming purple jersey won't be ugly and undermine this, as I fear it will.

Unrelatedly, it's kinda weird that the socks stripes are white instead of gray for Toronto... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Unrelated to the sponsor, but seeing that Sounders away kit I just have to say wow I miss 2017 Adidas. Not every team's jersey looked great, but almost all of them were unique. It really felt like Adidas was putting in actual effort for MLS to look as good as possible, and for every team to have their own little touch. That was the year we got:

- Weird wing gradient DC

- Even weirder Eyes of Texas gradient Dallas

- The best Houston kit ever

- Half and half Revolution

- The best NYCFC kit ever

- NYRB kit with a unique pinstripe pattern

- The best Orlando kit ever that actually used gold

- The best Portland kit ever

- San Jose's crest pattern prominently on the shirt instead of it being a small detail

- The Sounders jersey above

- The best Kansas City kit ever

- Unique triangle pattern on Vancouver

Ever since then it's been templates templates templates.

A screw up by Fanatics caused the new Jimi Hendrix-inspired Sounders shirt to be leaked early:

As a Timbers fan, I have to applaud the Sounders for taking a risk with this one and I think once it’s officially revealed the story and inspiration behind it will be much more authentic than the Nightfall kits. Purely aesthetically, I think it misses the mark a little bit with how many different colors there are between the navy blue and purple of the base, the yellow and orange trim, and the white Zulily logo and names/numbers. I get why they did it in trying to replicate the psychedelic look and specifically the purple Jimi Hendrix Experience album, but to me there needs to be a better balance in replicating that look while also making a more cohesive design. If it were me I would’ve picked either navy or purple as the base color and had the pattern in a more tonal application (still clearly visible though, not an embossed print), and I would’ve just made the adidas stripes yellow to match the logos. The white names/numbers are unfortunate, too, but I assume that choice was made to tie in to the Zulily logo. I’d probably grade it as like a C just from an aesthetic standpoint, but I think the risk-taking factor and Hendrix inspiration bump it up a little bit.

Here’s the aforementioned album cover for reference:

See, I think that tonal purple on purple pattern of the album cover would’ve been much more effective on the shirt.

It's out there! But it's also not terrible. Not the Sounders' best-ever alt, but I like that it dares to dream.

Is the Hendrix swirl based on an existing Adidas pattern? Or is it unique for Seattle?

I think it’s unique to Seattle, as I haven’t been able to find an existing Adidas pattern that looks similar.

I agree with this. I think the yellow on the shoulder and chest badges is what makes it a step too far. Purple, orange and white would have been sufficient to convey the connection to the Hendrix album.

Also, what is that little bit of orange trim on the sleeves? It's hard to tell from that picture, but it looks like it also has some sort of white pattern in it.

Man, That Sounders kit is some doo. I get the history, and the story, and I dig that part of it, but they could've just used the orange/gold color from the album for the logos and stripes instead of using the orange shoulder and almost like dehydrated-piss yellow for the crest. I don't get the usage, and it definitely makes the crest itself look pretty horrific.

That Sounders jersey is beautiful! Shame about the white sponsor and numbers though...

I’m sure a lot of People share this thought, but the zuliliy sponsor is still the worst. I miss XBOX

The Sounders kit is much better than I thought... but I still don’t like the clash of the gold accents versus the orange ones. Should have gone all gold or all orange. Maybe we get a Seattle grunge inspired kit next 😀

I didn’t include the pattern since we don’t know exactly what it’ll look like and since it’s just going to be a barely-noticeable embossed print.

If the green came from 90s' inspiration, then I wish they would have used blue or light blue somewhere...just for a stronger connection to the original logo. Just shades of green is kinda lame.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

I think that’s my biggest gripe, and I’d also throw in the white sponsor logo and names/numbers as well. I’m not a huge fan of the navy base color mixed with the purple pattern, but I think I could live with it if the accent colors were (ideally) all the same color or even just limited to the yellow or orange for the adidas stripes and logos plus white for the Zulily logo and names/numbers. I’m assuming the Zulily contract mandates that the logo is white, so in that case they really needed to pick either the yellow or orange as the other accent color instead of having both in addition to the white.

I think this is one of those instances where the sponsor helps the kit. I don't know what it is but it definitely looks better with than without it.
