College sports logos with only letters?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if there's a list anywhere of schools that have letters for a primary logo without a mascot.  Or schools that use the wordmark more than the mascot. (TCU?) LIU has a shark but they use the wordmark more.

Eastern Michigan (E)

Houston (UH)

Baylor (BU)

Notre Dame (ND)

It's incredibly popular for colleges to do this. Gonna try without cheating off the Sportslogo archives here.

Illinois - Block I & ILLINOIS

Wisconsin - W

Minnesota - M

Nebraska - N (thick primary, thin helmet)

*Maryland - M (primary, though the flag & Terp logos get used plenty)

*Michigan State - Spartan helmet is primary, but they also use the S for State

For NC State, the S is what they tend to favor.  I'm fairly certain Michigan State considers their S and the Spartan helm as co-primaries.  Then you got Villanova's split V.

Regarding this original post,  it all depends on the definition.

"primary logo without a mascot"  Without a mascot AT ALL?    VERY few of these.  If you look into it in print and their website, or merch websites, you'll ALMOST always find some sort of mascot,  often listed as a "secondary" logo.  For example, Notre Dame or Houston:
Notre-Dame-Fighting-Irish-Logo-2x1.jpeghouston_cougars_2012-pres-aa.png

Now, in regards to  "schools that use the wordmark more than the mascot", that  also depends on context.

On  actual uniforms, (particularly helmets) wordmarks and letters are much more common here;  mascot helmet logos are few and far between in college  (we discussed that on these boards quite some time ago), and mascot logos are almost non-existent on college basketball, baseball, and other sports unis-- maybe a logo on the side of the shorts  in basketball, but that's about it. .

But in publications, and on print ads, banners and flags, and apparel merch -- t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, etc.?   That's when you start getting those mascot logos a lot more, often more than the wordmark or individual letters.

A few examples from don't care and Akronite's lists:

That "southern dude"-- Colonel Reb--  was retired/phased out back in 2010.

It is what it is.

My son is a sophomore at Maryland.  The M is probably emphasized a little over the Terrapin-M logo, but it's definitely not exclusive.

We have a Tervis tumbler that uses the current M, the current wordmarks and the Terrapin-M at the same time.  If it' s not exactly this one, it's pretty close.

Off topic --

One of my pet peeves is that the Terrapin-M logo uses the Aachen Bold M from the pre-UA days.  I wish they would revise it to use the current M, but there may be legal reasons why they can't.

Dr. Kelso: My son is a big baseball fan. Not so much playing it, but more the designing and sewing of uniforms.

Tyler: That's neat.

Dr. Kelso: No, it's not.

yeah a bunch of schools do this. they shouldn't. I miss that period from like 1995-2005 when colleges had really cool proper primary logos, then I guess the "uuuuuuuuu my truditiun" sentiment kicked in and they all went to the safest logos possible.

charleston southern, meanwhile, just did the opposite and made their pirate head the primary, which rocks
