WHAT. A. GAME.

Best MLS Cup Final ever. I’m still stunned. Cannot believe this team finally did it. I thought the game was over for sure when Elliot put the Union ahead near the end but this team just does not quit. Even with just 10 men, Bale with the best goal in our history to save it.

I have never cried, and sobbed over my team winning anything in my life until today. It’s a special championship because I’ve supported this team from the start. Before we even had a crest or colors. Before we had signed anyone, before ground even broke on the Banc. Super thrilled and happy for Carlos Vela. Our first ever player, our Captain and our best player finally winning that elusive cup.

MLS Cup Champions! Will never forget this.

Congrats! LAFC was due and that was an amazing playoff run.

How bout Louisville City in USL Championship. They've been to the conference finals every season they have played. They now head to the finals for a fourth time in 8 years (winning two titles). They will either host Colorado Springs or play at San Antonio.

Michigan Stars defeat Albion San Diego in the NISA Finals. South Georgia Tormenta defeat Chattanooga Red Wolves in the USL League One Final. One more champion to crown for the 2022 North American soccer season. San Antonio FC defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks and will host Louisville City for the USL Championship Final next weekend.

San Antonio won the USL championship tonight. Absolutely thrilled for my two friends Shannon Gomez and Mitchell Taintor. Bummed they couldn’t bring the cup home for Sacramento, but over the moon to see them getting to celebrate. Two of my favorite dudes I got to work with during my Sac Republic days.

I kind of like the idea in the abstract but feels like it would swing the pendulum back to making the playoffs way too long. Also with Leagues Cup that makes TWO extra mini-leagues on top of the regular season. How much MLS are we all clamoring for, anyway?

This year I learned that for a non-playoff team, not as much.

EDIT: I think this also means Messi is incoming.

Are these guys just testing FIFA's ideas for them? The current setup is fine. But they can't avoid tinkering with everything.

Front and center:

Also, they could have posted a picture of Thiago Almada with any of his other teammates, but instead it's Messi:

Also this:

Also these tweets when Argentina clinched a spot in the finals:

Great. Now allocate him to one of Columbus. Montreal, Nashville (ugh), Real Salt Lake or Orlando...or Cincinnati. Or Colorado. Why should only NY, LA, Seattle & Miami have all the fun?

In 5-8 years, Neymar and/or M'bappe will probably be playing for one of these teams.    The MLS did have Didier Drogba in Montreal at one point.

I wouldn't be surprised to see  a few of the second choice European players coming into MLS in 2026, just to keep playing right up until the tournament.  It worked, somewhat, for Gareth Bale this last year. Granted that was for a winter World Cup. If the 2030 Cup goes to Saudi Arabia, we'll be seeing that happen again. But likely with more of those guys getting ready for one more chance at the trophy.

On the playoffs thing, I also recall that one of the MLS execs' own criticisms of the two-leg format was that a team could lose the 2nd leg but still go through on goal differential if they won by a lot the first leg. But now they're going for a group stage where a team could fully rest their first-choice XI on the last game if earlier ones went well for them, and advance anyway. This does solve for two of my complaints about the current format -- fluky one-and-done losses, and lower-seeded teams getting zero home games. However... It's both the constant tinkering AND the always-moving goalposts that make MLS difficult to take seriously, even when the soccer's fun to watch.

It's a new year. That means new MLS playoff structure!

If MLS does go through with a "Group Stage" playoff, why bother having conferences? Just take the top 16 teams in the league.

Enough to entice one to purchase their MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
