NFL 2023 Changes

Doesn't the Addams family have the rights to the Oilers blue color or just the name "Luv Ya Blue?" Just the logo and history?

Hannah McNair compared the blue to the classic Houston Police Department patrol cars color and said it was around longer than the Oilers and it's really more of an "H-Town Blue."  I wonder if they can just bring back the colors and change the names of the colors?

"'Luv Ya Blue' is part of the Houston culture, so we recognize that," Cal McNair told Adam Winkler and Bob Slovak during an interview. "We are looking at our uniforms for the first time in 20 years, and we'll try to take it all in and enjoy the fan feedback."

"I would call it more 'H-town Blue,'" Hannah McNair added. "It's been around Houston a lot longer than the Oilers, so I would call it 'H-town blue.' If you recall, those HPD cars used to be pretty blue."

HPD had to special order that color then either the photo coloring is off or the color changed over time

Did they use those photos of police and police cars, or was that added just to help us with a visual?

Dolphins full-time throwbacks?  I’d even settle for the current set with darker teal and more-orange orange.  Oh, and block numbers.

Yeah the throwback is a little more green than blue.

I've come around on the current Dolphins set. It's quite nice with the white facemask. In particular, I like the white over white with teal socks. Maybe you could adopt the throwback colors, but that'd be about it.

The Dolphins current uniforms aren’t that bad but the logo is still complete trash. They need to bring back the goofy dolphin in a helmet asap.

A photo was attached to the news channels tweet, but i added those myself to see if there's an issue with the color rights and if slight differences means the color CAN be used? I'm just unsure of what exactly the Texans could do that's similar to the Oilers aesthetic - legally speaking.  The apparel being shown color matches closer to the 90s patrol car(that 3rd photo) which is the same used in the tweet.

I've been trying to figure out for years exactly where the inspiration for the Oilers' colors came from. If that's what it was,  then that's about the last place I would've expected.

Also, more evidence* that "H-TOWN" is gonna figure prominently in the Houstonians' Texans' next branding life...

Life long Houstonian and that's one of the things i wrote in about- i'd rather us be Houston centric than a 2nd/wannabe Texas team pretending we could ever surpass the Cowboys. It's the Clippers in the Lakers shadow on a statewide scale.  I welcome H-Town branding and the H logo, but i can see where other's wouldn't. The H admittedly looks more like a classic Baseball logo than a football teams logo, but i like it.   Luv ya blue/white with or without red looks clean and the simplicity of the H logo works with the colors(i also really like the blue and white).

I'm good with red helmets with simple clean (not as dark as steel blue) blue jerseys with bold white numbers like the practice squad. Red for the Texans chest wordmark and red swoosh. Tweeks to add sharp details like the logo. White pants, bold blue side stripe coming to sharp point like the stripe through the logo. I think RWB looks striking. RWB with white or red as primary pops. Blue as primary like Team US Dream Team/Redeem Team Aways and it looks dull. Even Michael Jordan couldn't make blue primary with red and white look cool. Blue/Red without a third color looks better.

Plus side: Red helmets stand out outside of KC. May look like an opposite Giants but i, along with most fans here are bored and tired of the deep steel blue dominance.

Two things:

1) Having spent entirely too much time in my younger days around 1960 and Kuykendahl (IYKYK), and probably more time than should've been legally allowed down around Richey Rd (again, IYKYK), I feel you on H-town wanting to go Houstocentric—and in no way will the Texans EVER eclipse the Cowboys. (Shoot, from what I remember they had a hard enough time eclipsing UTA!). I suppose the thing that concerns me with whatever they're cooking up is that the McNairs/Nike may overdo it to the point of corniness*. Of course, all this could've been averted way back when had they gone with Toros rather than Texans; then they could Houstify their heart's desires with no problem!

And 2), regarding a red/white/navy colorway wherein red takes the lead, the AAF's Memphis Express showed us it can work, and doggone well, too:

I’d like the Throwbacks, but with the current Aqua.  The old Aqua looks too green & dingy to me.

As for Houston and Luv Ya Blue, I don’t believe you can trademark a color (I could be wrong) but that shouldn’t be a reason they can’t use it.  I’d assume the Titans wouldn’t be happy about it though and could potentially challenge them in court, saying it’s too close to their IP.

My fear with the Houston rebrand is that it’s going to be super street/urban, based off of the H logo that looks like it could be from a gang or biker tattoo.  Let’s hope they choose classy over what they might perceive as “cool”.

Colors are free to be trademarked, as stupid as it is. The Home Depot's shade of orange, Tiffany blue, UPS brown, and T-Mobile magenta are all trademarked. I don't believe Luv Ya Blue falls under that category, and it's likely far too late to do anything about it now. At this point, with the Titans using it so sparingly, it's just another shade of powder blue now. I'm sure the Houston rebrand would be well within their rights to use it, though I'd prefer they forge their own path in their rebrand rather than hearkening back to a past that isn't legally their own.

I love the red helmets and would absolutely be in favor of a red-heavy rebrand. No need to change the logo in my book at all; it's one of the best in any sport. They really only need a slight enhancement of what they have to be great, but if they were to go more outlandish with their rebrand, I'd be totally down for something like this: (shameless plug time once again)

Can’t say I’m a big fan of the red helmet for the Texans. That’s not to say I wouldn’t be in favor of them using more red. I wouldn’t be disappointed if the red jersey  was promoted to primary, but the think the navy helmet is better for them.

There's a fine line between pro and college/hs/amateur and i'm not sure that Express design seems very NFL(though Nike seems to want to look like college designs these days).  I also wrote in about Texans should be rough and rugged and probably more traditional. The logo while i love it, doesn't allow for a traditional design.

The battle red looked terrible with the current red jerseys live. I didn't like how the different shades of red collided. I do love the red helmet as a standalone and feel it does pop with a primary blue top. While i like your design, other than not being a fan of tv numbers, i feel it's the same problem with the current uniforms in that it's too much of one color. I just happen to like helmets being a different color from home jerseys, other than white helmet with white top which is clean.  Your design would improve drastically to me with a white helmet because of my interest in the different color helmet and top. As a concept route, it's still playing up the name which is of course the problem in itself.  We'll never be Texas's team even while being named Texans and having the state flag all over our uniforms in the NFL and even behind the prestige of some of the big classic Texas universities.

As much as i think they got the logo and wordmark right, i would.. hesitantly move away from it to do a Houston centric theme. Short of a rebrand to space theme, it's the smartest move to get the city hype about their team and move away from the Clippers feel of the current brand. I would seriously rather be called the Houston Football Team at this point over the Texans.  Even the Clippers brand moved up some by going urban LA centric vs the Hollywood Lakers little brother.

If I'm not mistaken, I think I saw that the "H-Town" stuff is just a side fashion line thing, I imagine it won't have much of an impact on the actual redesign, beyond maybe the actual phrase of "H-Town" and the inclusion of Luv Ya Blue.

The Texans could switch to the battle red helmet as the primary, change nothing else, and I'd have been fine with them keeping their uniforms as-is. We'll see how the redesign goes though.

Toros would have been an awesome name, so much more interesting than Texans. They could have kept the logo essentially the same, too. Was this ever actually considered?

I would dig this general look for the Texans. If they don't go full-on Oilers colors, red primary is the way to go for them. I'd probably prefer white pants at home & navy pants on the road as the primary combos, but red pants on occasion would be nice, too.

IANAL, but I believe the nature of the trademark is that you can't use those colors in a competing business.  So HD may own the trademark of orange being the predominant color of a big-box home-improvement store.  Titans might own the trademark of a pro football team in Houston wearing light blue and red.  As long as they sell merch that says "Houston Oilers" in light blue and red, they can claim that they're using the TM and keep it.  Again, not a lawyer, just what I've picked up based on independent research.

Not a fan of the Red helmet and believe they should still have a Navy primary.  I’m also a Red pants hater.

Would love to see you mock up this template with a Navy jersey and White helmet.

Interesting how these opinions fall: I agree that the throwback look is better than the current one. But if a blend would be on the table, I'd take the throwback set in the current colors. That shade of aqua, especially in the sun, is unbeatable.
