They aren't far enough south to call themselves Florida Southwestern though (which is an actual school near Ft. Myers). Completely off topic, but it feels weird When USF was founded in 1956 it was the southernmost public university in Florida, hence the name*. By the time FAU and FIU came around in 1961 and 1965 it was too late to change it. *But even back then there was a clear definition of South Florida and Tampa wasn't part of it, so I still don't really get it even though that's the explanation.
