I think a negative run differential is a sign of a bad team, yes. Quality of wins should also matter.

How do we decide what constitutes a quality win? For example, a first place team could have been in the middle of an injury riddled 3-11 stretch when they were swept by a barely good enough to be wild card team. Do we count the sweep as three quality wins simply because those wins came against a first place team? Or do consider how the first place team was actually playing at the time of the sweep?  Best I can tell, the only way to figure it out is to go further down the nerd stat rabbit hole and at that point, there's no need to bother with wins and losses. Why not play just enough games to get a decent sample size and then let the spreadsheet warriors figure out the rest?

guess this is as good a time to bring it up as any: I think I hate Mets fans more than fans of any other team, at least barring Houston.

I've met plenty of wonderful Braves, Phillies, etc. fans, but Mets fans have such a cult of doomerism that spending any extended length of time around them is a draining experience. you'd think they'd already been swept if you checked in with them after the third inning tonight. it's like an entire ecosystem of Tanks.

I don't think it's going to bug me that much if they do get swept, honestly. if the fanbase wants to be miserable so bad, give them a reason.

We should let the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee decide playoff teams based on quality of wins since they do such a wonderful job every March.

National league is wild.

All three wild-card teams have better records than the top AL WC team, the Phillies are competing for a bye with a team that's behind a WC team with 90 wins, and there's literally no team that any team wants to face.  It's not like in years past where there's at least one or two jabroni teams that and low odds.  Every single series could go either way, and bye or no bye, I'm terrified of any matchup the Phillies might have.  I could even see the Mutts in the NLCS, and any of the other teams winning the pennant.  The pessimist in me ranks the Phillies 5 of 6... but they just lost 3 of 4 to the team I'd rank 6, so that says something.

Not that I pay attention when the Phillies aren't in it, but I can't remember a stronger field.

The Padres are looking good too. They're getting hot at the right time and might pass the Dodgers or at least only finish a few games short.

How do we hold the record if they only complete 161? Deferring to winning percentage makes sense but is deeply unsatisfying.

The '62 Mets only played 160 games.  40-120.

Speaking of winning percentage, the CWS need to lose 4 out of their last 5 to finish with a worse WP than the 1916 A's which would break the modern record

Mets and Braves staring at a Monday doubleheader due to postponements today and tomorrow.  Playoffs impacted by that requirement.

you know, it's really difficult to keep looking at things from an impartial point of view when what you're looking at is an embarrassing, ineptitude-fueled screwjob.

why the hell don't Atlanta have a retractable roof in the first place, anyway?

The Angels are gonna launch Cocaine Ron at the end of the year, right? Like, there's no way at this stage that he's anything but a one-year stopgap, right?

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

He only has 1 year left after this one. I feel like he'll finish out his contract, but who really knows what Arte will do (except sell the team like he should)

Hearing some absolutely WILD stuff coming out of the Coliseum the last few games. Apparently the vast majority of the vendors have gone completely rogue. Have been offering “cash discounts” on everything from hot dogs to game used gear, and have been pocketing the money. Oakland PD has been informed, and have told the A’s they can cram it.

Tomorrow is going to be an absolute :censored:SHOW. If they get the full game played, it’ll be a miracle.

Remember in '71, the last game Senators 2.0 ever played in DC before heading to Texas?  Remember how that ended up?

Yeah, that Oakland finale's gonna make it look like a grade school square-dance.

This is how the Warriors should've left town. The fealty to the techbro barons was a tragedy.

I mean, the Warriors stayed in the same market which softened the blow, and despite the recent run of major success, Oakland barely ever cared about the Warriors. The move made sense, and while there were/are a contingency of people who complained about it, it didn’t really have THAT much effect.

The Raiders was probably worse, but they’re the dysfunctional ass Raiders, have done this dance before. Also, probably the main reason they even moved was because the Davis nepo baby didn’t think he could ever work with the hedge fund nepo baby who owns the A’s.

The A’s leaving is the real tragedy. Warriors were there longer, but the A’s were the team the people embraced. They were the ones with the success. The Warriors and Raiders were just teams in Oakland. The A’s were part of the identity of the area.

I’m not really an A’s fan any more (used to be, but recognized how useless that was going to be), but this move is legit sad.
