Nationals Caps----RED is Home

Through much of the day, Major League Baseball's online store, shop.mlb.com, showed a blue hat with the script "W" as the home hat and the red version of the same as the Nationals' away cap.

In fact, the red hat, worn by D.C. and team officials at yesterday's announcement, will be the version worn at RFK Stadium. The blue hat will either be an away or alternate cap.

"There was some confusion about that, I think, but the red hat is the home hat," Nationals President Tony Tavares said. "The ultimate fate of the blue is all part of the uniform design we haven't quite finished yet."

The design of the uniforms themselves were not revealed yesterday. Those plans still await final approval from MLB, its major apparel suppliers and other key parties.

The designs are expected to be released in about two weeks and could arrive in conjunction with a scheduled appearance on Dec. 2 by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig before the Greater Washington Board of Trade.

Man, those Nats' officials are worse than my undecided sweetheart about dressing for an elegant dinner. :D

The best thing is that I never will invite any Nats' official to dinner...!!!

With a red hat, I wonder if the pinstripes will be red. If so, they'd look a lot like the Phillies.

Of course, I'm jumping the gun by assuming pinstripes.

Has there every been a team with different colored pinstripes then the cap...I'm sure there has.

In fact, I just answered my own question. The Marlins used to have teal pinstripes.

Now though, has there ever been a team with a lighter color hat than their pinstripes. (I'm counting red as lighter than blue--especially navy.)

i see why. if they played the cardinals and wore the red caps on the road and the blue at home it would be too confusing

I have never heard of any baseball player who threw to the wrong base because he confused the opposition's baserunners with his own teammates.

That would have nothing to do with it, there are many teams that share the same cap colour

where are they selling them? the mlb.com shop says 6-8 week backorder when I try to order them. any way to get one quicker? I am looking for a blue one.

I hear that they were selling them at the ceremony at Union Station on Monday, but none of the sporting goods stores seem to have them in stock yet.

And I can confirm that, in the genious of MLB, they only had that stand open one day. Since I was going to be riding Amtrak on Tuesday I decided to not venture down to Union Station on Monday, but now the only Nats hat, or piece of merchandise, is an adjustable Nike hat at Lids. I'm waiting for the New Era and Twins Enterprises fitted hats. The guy at Lids wasn't very helpful, and just told me that they'd be getting more Nats hats in, but there was no timeline.

I also think that the New Era fitteds that they were selling on Monday weren't MLB Authentic Collection hats, because they had the New Era logo on the side. I think that these were Cooperstown Collection hats for the Senators, because I have an old-school maroon Phillies New Era fitted, and that has the New Era logo on the side.

I'll pass on any new info about Nats merchandise. I plan on calling that Union Station Lids every Friday until they get the fitteds in. I just hope that they get them in before I come home again for Winter Break.

I don't think there will be any pinstripes. Look at this photo of Frank Robinson from ESPN.com

I'm not sure i'd judge by that photo. Frank looks to be wearing a white jersey - the home color -- in that picture with the road hat, if we're looking at details.

Although I prefer the red hats as home, I thought that it would have been a unique twist to do the reverse -Cardinals move and go navy-home, red-away. Now it doesn't seem so original. Maybe the navy should just be alts. I always liked the Cards better with red road caps (fashion-wise) and I like the Angels in red and gray. We'll see... and I see no reason to make the DC caps the primaries. An alt maybe.

Don't trust those ESPN photoshops... they're not intended to be authentic. The only reason they used a blue cap was probably because it was an easier transition from the Expos' blue.

That is a Photoshoped photo. The pinstripes had been slightly erased.
