So would Vegas be the frontrunner in Washington falls through? I would have to laugh if they decided they had to keep the Nationals but the team wound up going to Monterrey, Mexico. The "Monterrey Nationals"??

LT

Mexico's a nation. Makes sense to me.

My guess is they are headed to Northern Va. rather than out of the DC area alltogether. But just in case, my recommendations:

Virginia Cannons: Civil War reference, but also "cannon of an arm"

Las Vegas Aces: Yes, a gambling reference, but also "ace of the staff"

Portland Pioneers: Nice generic inoffensive name.

San Juan Jets: Ok, the West Side Story reference is lame, but I couldn't think

of a good bilingual name (Santos? Diablos? Amigos? Salsa?)

Monterrey Dorados: "Golden boys" of Mexican Baseball

I still think Washington Veterans would have been a great name, especially when the Vets play the Mets.

And maybe now we can eliminate one of the RED-BLUE-WHITE teams, since the Nat's weren't gonna do it.

It's either Washington or Vegas right now. I can see Selig moving the team to Vegas right now, before the season starts, if he so wishes.

Washington may have gotten a little too cute for their own good here.... all in Vegas' favor.

I don't know why the league feels that Las Vegas is a feasable option. The only baseball stadium of substanial size in Vegas is Cashman Field, and the capacity there is barely 10,000. Granted, this is more than the average attendance at Le Toilet Bowl du Nord, but the potential loss of revenue from a stadium that small wouldn't be loose change. Even Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan held twice as much than Cashman.

I don't even see that many fans coming out in the middle of the summer to see the games. It's not like BOB in Phoenix, with air conditioning and a retractable dome. Even with night games, the average temperature at game time could be around 100 degrees. Forget about day games...110+. And only a small area behind home plate is under shade, or in reach of the misting machines they have there to counteract the dry heat.

Is it possible to construct more bleachers or seating for another 10-15,000 fans at this field by April? I doubt it. The only other option I guess would be to renovate Sam Boyd Stadium (UNLV) for a baseball field.

I really don't think Vegas is a viable solution, temporary or otherwise, unless a brand new stadium is built.

For now, I'm just going to assume they're still going to play in Washington. Bud Selig said Washington is considered the home of the franchise until the Dec. 31 deadline passes, and only then will they consider offers from other locations. My gut tells me they'll work things out in D.C., because it's a lot of money wasted for both MLB and the D.C. Owners if they don't.

On a side note, if those are the official Nat uniforms, it's a waste of a clean slate, so to speak. That home jersey looks identical to the Angels except for the wordmark. I hope they do something different.

Yes I agree, the Pirates could be moved to the Nats spot.  But still that would leave the 15-15 impossible format.  So do you agree to bring back the Brewers as well?

where's xlr8r when you need him?? he was the master of this kind of thing.

I miss him.

call me crazy, nuts, retardrd, and stupid if you want to, but sacramento, CA has a minor league stadium can be renovated in a matter of weeks if necessary to hold a major league team. probably wishful thinking.......... but being so close to Sacramento, id like it, and im sure its possible because Oakland's minor league team could move to the Sac state stadium and the MLB team could move there. i know a guy who works for Raley field and he was telling me this. of course a major disaster would have to occour for this to happen

I don't think there's no way for 15 and 15 to work. First, here are two re-alignment ideas, trying to move clubs as little as I possibly can. In fact, Houston, Arizona, Toronto and Pittsburgh are the only franchises you'd need to even think about moving,.

If the Nationals Franchise stays in Washington:

AL East

Toronto

New York Yankees

Boston

Baltimore

Tampa Bay

AL Central

Minnesota

Kansas City

Chicago White Sox

Cleveland

Detroit

AL West

Texas

Seattle

Oakland

Anaheim

Arizona(You would not ask the Dodgers, Giants or Padres to move to the AL. Coors Field(Rockies) would get devastated in the AL, so the Diamondbacks, with their pitcher's ballpark, become the logical choice, where an added hitter might really help a struggling offense.)

NL East

New York Mets

Atlanta

Washington

Philadelphia

Florida

NL Central

St. Louis

Chicago Cubs

Cincinatti

Milwuakee

Pittsburgh

NL West

San Francisco

San Diego

Los Angeles

Colorado

Houston(Their natural rival in Texas is in the West, why not them?)

Interleague Rivalries(AL-NL)

East

Yankees-Mets

Red Sox-Phillies

Blue Jays-Braves

Orioles-Nationals

Devil Rays-Marlins

Central

Tigers-Pirates

Twins-Brewers

Indians-Reds

Royals-Cardinals

White Sox-Cubs

West

Athletics-Giants

Rangers-Astros

Mariners-Padres

Angels-Dodgers

Diamondbacks-Rockies

And here's a re-divison of teams if the Nationals went to Las Vegas:

AL East

Toronto

New York Yankees

Boston

Baltimore

Tampa Bay

AL Central

Minnesota

Kansas City

Chicago White Sox

Cleveland

Detroit

AL West

Texas

Seattle

Oakland

Anaheim

Arizona(You would not ask the Dodgers, Giants or Padres to move to the AL. Coors Field(Rockies) would get devastated in the AL, so the Diamondbacks, with their pitcher's ballpark, become the logical choice, where an added hitter might really help a struggling offense.)

NL East

New York Mets

Atlanta

Pittsburgh

Philadelphia

Florida

NL Central

St. Louis

Chicago Cubs

Cincinatti

Milwuakee

Houston

NL West

San Francisco

San Diego

Los Angeles

Colorado

Las Vegas Franchise

Interleague Rivalries(AL-NL)

East

Yankees-Mets

Red Sox-Phillies

Blue Jays-Braves

Orioles-Pirates

Devil Rays-Marlins

Central

Twins-Brewers

Indians-Reds

Royals-Cardinals

White Sox-Cubs

West

Athletics-Giants

Mariners-Padres

Angels-Dodgers

Diamondbacks-Las Vegas

West/Central

Rangers-Astros

Tigers-Rockies

Obviously, the rivalries don't match up nearly as well here. Anyways...

Now, here's that system where 15 and 15 works. Opening day in 2005 is April 4th. Now, if you have 28 out of 30 teams start on the fourth, then yes, you're asking for trouble. But let's say you don't do that. Let's say you have 8 teams start on the fourth, 8 on the fifth, 8 on the sixth and 6 on the seventh. Well, when the seventh rolls around, you'd have three teams in each league left - but wait. You'd have the teams that opened 3-game series on the fourth now available. So, some of those teams started their second series on the seventh, with those six remaining teams included. At the All-Star Break, the process would restart. You would wind up with having no day in baseball where all 30 teams were playing, two would always be off. You'd essentially have four opening days, and four last days of the season. A headache for schedulers? Sure, but far from impossible, and the only way to make a 15-15 MLB work.

hell, I'll take the name Teepees if it means we could get an MLB team here, haha.

...the only way to make a 15-15 MLB work.

15-15 can work. Why can't there be an interleague series every day of the season? Is it really that big of a novelty anymore that it has to all be done simultaneously?

Yeah, that's the other way. I decided not to put it down, because I assumed the general idea is to keep Interleague play in June for the most part. There are 84 Interleague series played every year, and approximately 28 weeks of baseball. Which means 56 is an ideal number, to play two series each week plus the off day. That leaves another 28 series, which means an additional two Interleague series can be played every other week, and reduce the scheduler's headache.

I think there are two problems there:

One, baseball becomes kind of like football, where AFC-NFC matchups are peppered into the schedule like normal games. I think baseball purists who loathe Interleague play already would object to that even more, and even the casual fan would be annoyed the Interleague matchups he wants to see are scattered through the year.

Two, and more importantly, you don't want teams playing interleague opponents in September with divison titles on the line...

Kenny, the tough part is that the Diamondbacks already had a $#!t fit about being in the AL. Hence why the Diamondbacks went to the NL, and to prevent an interleague series on a regular basis, Selig's Brew Crew, jumped to the NL. Kinda ironic since, the Brewers had the slogan went they switched with "We're going National!" Granted the D-Backs have new ownership now so that might change.
