CaolinaJoe
Right after Eric Dickerson left wasn't it? "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom ofspeech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given usthe freedom to demonstrate. And it is the soldier who salutes theflag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, andwho allows the protester to burn the flag."Marine Chaplain Dennis Edward O' Brien

yh
Blatant and widespread gifts of cash and other valuables to players and the university's indifference, if not outright sanctioning of such activity was the main reason. I went to college with a girl who worked for one of the boosters who was implicated in the scandal (and, interestingly enough, a similar scandal with the TCU football program as well). The guy ran a pizza place - the players had a special "hotline" number that they would call to place their pizza order. Only certain employees were allowed to answer that line and when they did, they would be the ones to package the pizzas for pickup - and tape an envelope of cash inside each pizza box. That was apparently among the tamer violations - and there were many.
