Well, CCSLC was doing it first, but the absurdity of it wasn't lost on Ray Rotto of ESPN.com:

The Angels' identity crisis

New York Jets |3-3| First, AFC East

New York Mets |74-88| Fourth, NL East

New York Islanders|34-37-11| Fifth, Atlantic Division

New Orleans Hornets |21-45| Third, Southwest Division

Of course, looking at that Super Bowl pic, you had the former Nashville Oilers of Memphis facing the former Los Angeles Rams of Anaheim.

Please pay attention. As I think we've established, that's the Los Angeles Rams of St. Louis by way of Anaheim originally from Cleveland. Or LASTLANACLE, for short.

Ray Rotto of ESPN.com:

Take the Tri-Cities Hawks of NBA fame.

Hey, that makes perfect sense... although they are now the Quad-Cities. My hometown is one of them... and it was Blackhawks back then.

Back on topic... I remember in the original thread about this long ago, it mentioned L.A. also opposed the idea and planned to block it, so stay tuned. If nothing else, Arte will get what he wants -- publicitiy and the worldwide knowledge that Anaheim is located near L.A.

If they really wanted to expand their target market, they could have gone with...

"The Pacific Time Zone Angels"

OK, that wasn't as funny typed out as it was in my head.

I thought that was funny. Might as well include the Hawaiian time zone in there too so they don't feel left out. ^_^

Football, The Game Of Inches.

Yup..how many inches does the wad of money have to be to cheat in the Super Bowl..

That's right..half a decade later..I still think the Titans won that game.

the angels of Anaheim sort of makes sense, because the ducks are the mighty ducks of anaheim, but loose the LA. it sounds stupid, too MLS for me.sort of like FC dallas and rEAl Salt lake.

if i ever become a billionaire, you can all look forward to having the dallas stars become your home team...

why is that, you ask?

because what is more inclusive than the Planet Earth Hockey Stars, via Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, of Dallas, Texas, USA.... unless we get into universal stuff.... in which case, that's just too far :)

Yes, some members of LA City Council voted to deny the Angels' use of "Los Angeles" but it was, from what I read today, an entirely ceremonial vote that had no actual authority.

From the LA Times:

Two Los Angeles City Council members introduced a resolution last year opposing the name change. The symbolic action was designed to investigate how the city might protect its name from improper use.
