sscrunner06
I am almost positive that two players on the Sooners are wearing #28...Adrian Peterson, of course, but I also saw an OK defensive back make a tackle in the 1st quarter, and I could have sworn he was wearing #28 too.Has anyone else noticed this?? BRice16
College teams can have two players with the same number. In fact, (this was mentioned during Fox's coverage of the cotton Bowl) one year every member of Texas A&M's kickoff coverage team wore #12. sj32
College teams double up on numbers because at some of the major schools, they suit up more than 100 players at home. They usually try to make it so that when they double up on a number, one player is an offensive player and the other is a defensive player. I wonder what happens when a member of that kickoff coverage team gets a penalty?

sc49erfan15
Haha, they should do like dirt-track racecars and add letters. Or symbols."And #Q12 picks it off!""Fumble recovered by #pi!"Cool points for anybody that picks up the Calvin & Hobbes reference.
Chazberg
Yeah, it's a regular occurence; Michigan has two QB's who wear #7, Spencer Brinton and the amazing Chad Henne. Like someone mentioned it's because of roster size.

NJTank
Tahst common in COllege football sometime their are non scholorhip players who make teh pratcice squad and get to be on the sidelines, since their are no roster limits, and occasionally they get in a game, they even made a movie about a player like this Rudy. therebelas
Not EVERY member of the A&M kickoff team wears #12. A different student wears #12 each week and suits up as the 12th man and plays on the kickoff coverage teams. One of the best known traditions in college football.By the way, it's been a long time since I've even thought about St. Stanislaus much less seen a logo. rockchalk
I know KU had 2 players the last two years that wore #1 and both were starters John Randle (HB) and Gabe Toomey (LB). I knew why this was done but I didn't realize that both could be on the field at the same time. Both were on the punt coverage unit this season, with Toomey at a guard spot and Randle at a gunner. What would have a referee done if a penalty was called on one of them?

I understand that is the way it is THIS year, but the FOX announcers clearly stated that under a previous coach one season, in honor of the 12th Man tradition, he fielded an entire kickoff coverage team of walkons who all wore number 12. It was during a lengthy discussion about the 12th man tradition, which they were using as filler because A&M was getting blown out so badly. rtrich11
The best dual numbered pair was in 2001 at Texas with Major Applewhite on offense and Derrick Johnson on defense. They were both wearing #11. I didn't think they thought the freshman would play that much, but he ended up starting most of the year.
