SkyDome Renovation

The best renovation they can make there is to send Delgado down to Baltimore. Maybe send Wells with him also. Get rid of some of that un-needed clutter laying around.

Trade Delgado? I don't know about that, I think there's a rule against trading players that aren't on your team. :)

RFK has grass. Always has.

Also, it's interesting to note that the dome is nearly gone from MLB as well, with Minnesota and Tampa the only two teams that still play in one, and Minnesota may be in a new park sooner rather than later.

An example of what Chris is referring to as the "ring scoreboard" might be this:

This picture has me thinking about how much fun it would be to design some of the ads for these things. I assume they're fully animated. Something like this is supposedly being installed at RFK this season.

I like these ideas about SkyDome, but I'd still like to see them give some character to the playing surface if at all possible. The whole ballpark is symmetrical: 328' down the lines, 375' in the alleys, and 400' to center. Maybe if they moved a bit of fence in 10' and knocked a couple areas back another 10', it would get some much-needed character. Then they could maybe increase the height of some areas of the fence and such? You know, to make it interesting to look at and not give away immediately the idea that it opened in 1989...

Don't stadiums built after 1954(year?) have to have 330-400-330 or a wall to compensate for the lack of distance? If you were to move the fences in 10 feet the Blue Jays would have to put an even higher wall than what is there now.

I did say, "Then they could maybe increase the height of some areas of the fence and such?"

Personally, I'd just like to see some nooks and crannies around the field. So if the fences could be moved, they might also be able to make a wall or two taller...

Wall height is not mandated, just the distance from the plate. The rules mandate a minimum of 325 feet (99 m) from the plate down the lines, and 400 feet (121.9 m) to center field.

I would imagine Fenway is exempt from that rule?

The rule is in place for all new ballparks built in the modern era (since 1954, I think). Since Fenway was built around 1912, it is exempt. I don't know how the Red Sox were going to skirt around that rule, because all sketches of the proposed new Fenway still have the distances the same as it is now.

OK, so if SkyDome has to keep the line and centerfield measurements the same, can the alleys be tinkered with?

Here's an example of something...

Looks a little too random for me. But yes, perhaps some different features could make for a less generic appearance.

I don't know I kinda like the symmetry. With more and more teams now playing in these "retro" ballparks with its' quirky dimensions, it makes these type fieds more unique now.

Oakland, LA, Anaheim, Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto, Tampa

Also, it doesn't give a team any particular type of advantage.

I saw, I came, I left.

Those scoreboards aren't going to be distracting? Especially to a fielder who just let a ball go over his head and now has to turn around and look at them?

They do it in many other ballparks

( i dont know blue jays players so forgive me if he dosent play outfield, or even for the jays) SMACK!!! ball hit over hinskies head, his thoughts: " oh crap it hit the wall there it is.................................. oh crap the D rays won. were in last place again.................... WAIT!!!! I NEED TO GET THE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not too sure if any of you are familiar with the Air Canada Centre, but they have a ring scoreboard that runs along the facing of the 2nd Level where it often flashes, messages like " D-Fence " and such

chris,it has that in every pro rink

btw,you want jumbotron 2 words

Wasnt SBC Park in San Francisco also exempt because of how close it was to Mc Covey Cove?

1958, actually.

But the funny thing is that this is not technically a rule. This "rule" is two notes to Rule 1.04, which regulates the playing field, listed below:

NOTE a: Any Playing Field constructed by a club after July 1, 1958 shall provide a minimum distance of 325 feet from home base to the nearest fence, stand, or other obstruction on the right and left field foul lines, and a minimum distance of 400 feet to the center field fence.
b: No existing field shall be remodeled after June 1, 1958, in such manner as to reduce the distance to home base to the foul poles and to the center field fence below the minimum specified in paragraph (a) above.

Source: Official Baseball Rules, 1998 Edition, The Sporting News, publisher.

That being said, teams usually ask for (and 99 percent of the time, get) permission to build parks with foul-line distances below minimum - especially if land constraints or other issues make it difficult or near impossible to build to the minimum.

So, in our example, if the Blue Jays wanted to shorten the center-field distance to 120m (about 394 ft), they'd need permission from MLB to do it. But if they wanted to shorten the distance to the lines to 325 feet, no problem, since the fences are at minimum. Any closer to the plate on either side would require permission of MLB.

Got it? There's a quiz later! ^_^
