DEAD!
That guy must have had a small fortune when he passed away...Schmeling used the money from the bouts to buy the license to the Coca-Cola franchise in Germany and grew wealthy in the postwar era. He also marketed his name, retaining his huge popularity in Germany despite his problems with the Nazis.

Yeah I'd say, it seems like he was a pretty good guy -- refused to do things the Nazi's forced him to do, helped rescue Jews from concentration camps, etc

'Tis a shame he's most remembered as the "Aryan Superman" the Nazis wanted him to be, as opposed to the hero for humanity that he was.
slapshot
He and Louis became friends after their fights, similar to what Micky Ward and Arturo Gatti have done recently. Schmelling even paid for Louis' funeral.
NJTank
Schmeling hated Hitler unfortuntley he had to do some of the things Hitler asked of his for his family's sake and his sake.He refused many of what Hitler wanted but he could only do so much, and though he was painted with that brush when he fought Louis, Schmeling is far from a Nazi supporter.Heres some info on just how good Schmeling washttp://www.auschwitz.dk/schmeling.htm
Swiss
Do you know that when Schmeling refused to help Nazi propaganda during the war, was sent to Crete as a parachuteman? There was alots of fire but he could reach land safe.Once received a big hug from actual NY governor, F.D.Roosevelt in 1930.Schmeling was a very, very kind person and a superb sportman.God may receive in His glory. rmered
If anyone's read Letters from a Nut, by Ted L Nancy, and put out by Jerry Seinfeld, they would get a wry smile from even the mention of his name.
