paynomind
why answer all these questions....just let them design and see who can figure out how to properly show a business identity package. I think this first round is a learning process. Folks need to get a handle on what we are doing here. The later we get in this thing, the more we expect, and the less questions and mistakes we will tollerate.Like the watermarks thing... this is supposed to be anonymous, and he wants a watermark? Ridiculous! But, its the first round, so he gets a pass. NCFA Sunset Beach Tech - Octopi ΓΔΒ! I only made it a color so you'd know that it needed to be dark. Those that have summitted so far can resummit those entries with only the shirt changed if you want.Pat
CaolinaJoe
To the gentleman with "Gunnery Sergeant" in you signature the correct insignia would be:Gunnery Sergeant, E-7, is a Marine Corps rank, not an Army insignia as you have represented. What you have would be "Master Sergeant", which is an E-8. You would upset anyone who had attained these ranks by confusing and co-mingling them. These are ranks that take 12 to 15 years to acheive. Also, most "Gunnery Sergeant" would simply go by "Gunny", and the proper wat to write the rank with the name would be "GySgt."Since accuracy is probably a main point in your contest, these should be corrected. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom ofspeech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given usthe freedom to demonstrate. And it is the soldier who salutes theflag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, andwho allows the protester to burn the flag."Marine Chaplain Dennis Edward O' Brien
pcgd
I knew this would come up...well, our goal is not to offend anyone. This is why we have mixed the rankings and such so that it would be orginal and not based on one particular branch. The Gunnery Sargent is taken directly out of "Full Metal Jacket" as that as been partially our basis for this contest. Its the bootcamp of the Graphic Design Corps, not of any branch of the military.Like I said, we're trying to have a little fun and not at anyones expense. We both respect and support all of our troops as anyone should. We are not mocking them in any way shape or form. But the goal of our contest was to teach, and a bootcamp atmosphere seemed to be the perfect match.
Braden
Why are people nitpicking at the contest? Dude, they're doing a favor to us in doing this contest!I appreciate it and am gonna have fun with it, no matter what nickname they give me... although I won't be surprised if it's Private Teddybear or something This is something refeshingly new, and I'm really pumped about the challenges. I just submitted my entry, and I'm feeling lucky, and I've been on a roll lately! See as all of you should know, I am the ONLY CCSLCer to fairly beat a massive cheater (1st place, Puckguy's Logo Poker Contest Hand #2). Hahaha! CaolinaJoe
I wasn't nitpicking, I was educating. While I may have no knowledge of design, I do have a fair amount of knowledge on the military. But if you prefer to live in ignorance, carry on Private. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. Braden
Alright, alright... I'm sorry. It wasn't just directed at you.I just think it's silly that Pat has to reply after this and that and everything and even has to go so far to defend himself and the competition. Brian in Boston
Gunnery Sergeant, E-7, is a Marine Corps rank, not an Army insignia as you have represented. Technically speaking, E-7 isn't part of the rank, but a pay rate designation. I point this out because while it just so happens that in the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard there is only one NCO (non-commissioned officer) rank in each branch that receives an E-7 pay rate, the United States Air Force has two ranks that do so. The breakdown at the E-7 pay rate is:Army - Sergeant First Class (SFC)Navy - Chief Petty Officer (CPO)Marine Corps - Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt)Coast Guard - Chief Petty OfficerAir Force - Master Sergeant (MSgt) and First SergeantThe Air Force also has First Sergeants at the E-8 and E-9 pay rates. Air Force First Sergeants work directly for the unit commanders, deriving their authority directly from said commanders. At the E-8 level, the Army, Marine Corps and Air Force all have two NCO ranks at the pay grade. An Army, Marine Corps or Air Force NCO's rank at the E-8 pay rate is based upon job reponsibilities. The same holds true at the E-9 pay rate level, where the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard each have two NCO ranks, and the Air Force has three. The breakdown at the E-8 pay rates is:Army - Master Sergeant (MSG) and First Sergeant (1SG)Navy - Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO)Marine Corps - Master Sergeant (MSgt) and First SergeantCoast Guard - Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO)Air Force - Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt) and First SergeantThe breakdown at the E-9 pay rate is:Army - Sergeant Major (SGM) and Command Sergeant Major (CSM)Navy - Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) and Fleet/Command Master Chief Petty Officer Marine Corps - Sergeant Major (SgtMaj) and Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt)Coast Guard - Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) Command Master Chief Petty OfficerAir Force - Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt), First Sergeant and Command Chief Master Sergeant (CCM)Additionally, in all branches, there is a senior enlisted NCO at the E-9 pay rate (plus special allowances) who serves as the spokesperson for all enlisted personnel in their branch at the highest level of their respective services. These NCOs are:Army - Sergeant Major of the ArmyNavy - Master Chief Petty Officer of the NavyMarine Corps - Sergeant Major of the Marine CorpsCoast Guard - Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast GuardAir Force - Chief Master Sergeant of the Air ForceThese special NCOs act as personal advisors to the highest ranking military commanders and highest ranking civilian leaders within their respective branches (i.e. Army Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Army, Air Force Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Air Force, Commandant of the Coast Guard, etc.). They are charged with advising their military commanders/civilian leaders on matters impacting the enlisted personnel of the United States military. With apologies for hijacking the thread, I now return you to your regularly scheduled contest/tutorial, already in progress. markanthony
Damn, this is one educating Bootcamp! I cant believe how much I have learned... about the military rankings. I remember in Design school, we had Seniors, Juniors, and Freshman Designers. And now in real life, I am the Senior Designer and oversee my Junior Designers training the Freshman. I am sure glad that designing has nothing to do with the military(with the exception of recruiting ads and war-time propaganda).Great Entertainment! paynomind
I appreciate all the interest for getting this accurate. I regret we didnt clarify that this ranking system was "inspired by" the US system, and we knew it wasnt exact.I think I may have to come up with something for the Sergeant's stripes. Brian in Boston
I think I may have to come up with something for the Sergeant's stripes. Perhaps the Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant insignia, but instead of crossed rifles... a crossed pen and paintbrush? Oh, and instead of Olive Drab on Red, Navy Blue on Light Blue in honor of the CCSLC.
