Name That Team

"Brewers" is the perfect name for a Milwaukee baseball team. Not only does it fit with the heritage of the city, it's traditional, being used by Milwaukee baseball teams back into the 1800s. If I were awarded a baseball team for Milwaukee now (and Milwaukee didn't have one), I would do exactly what Bud Selig did and name them the Brewers.

But I presume that your question assumes a new name. In that case, I have to ask in what context are you speaking? Is this for a fantasy league? A softball league? Are you proposing a MLB replacement concept for the Brewers?

Different answers to those questions will provide different answers to your original question.

Way back when I started posting there was a challenge where Milwaukee was one of 2 cities that we were asked to suggest names for, and the challenger-I believe-chose from the suggestions ans set out the challenge (I think it was roger or discrim--but I could be wrong)-My suggestion for Milwaukee (with tongue firmly in cheek)-Milwaukee Talkies...

(I love puns) :D

Comic Sans walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve your type here."

Milwaukee Road (local railroad)

Milwaukee Badgers (early NFL franchise)

Milwaukee Millers (duh)

Milwaukee Iron (Harley nickname)

It's where I sit.

the "Milwaukee Talkies" thing was RC's idea, to clarify.

thinkin about it, I figure the "Milwaukee Road" thing could be expanded to be Milwaukee Roadmen. use highway signs and everything....

and on the same tangent as Gothamite's Hammers, I suggest Pounders.

on a slightly different tangent, I have another suggestion that I've been meaning to make but haven't gotten around to-Los Postinos de Milwaukee. yep, you read right. 'aaand Sheets goes with the express mail...steerike three!' :D

One debate some friends and I had on this - tho it wasn't strictly baseball - ended with

Milwaukee Keys.

Hey, Master Locks are made there...

Seriously, I like Hammers for a baseball team. In fact, I suggested it when Eau Claire entered the Northwest League or whatever league they're in. Aaron played his first season in the minors there and there's a bust of him at the park. Also leads to a nice Braves rip-off uniform with the hammer replacing the tommyhawk.

And why, to use another nickname, hasn't somebody suggested the Hogs as a Harley tie-in?

Great mascot, great chance for punny headlines "bringing home the bacon," "inside the pork home runs" and so on, and maybe a promotion with Piggly Wiggly.

If nothing else, Miller Park could be called The Pigpen.

(as for the Milwaukee Talkies, a local radio station is WOKY - pronounced "walkie," and their nightly call-in show was called "WOKY Talky."

How about the Milwaukee We Got Screwed Over By Bud Seligs

Point of order - Milwaukee should have no gripe against Bud. Not only did he try to keep the Braves from moving, not only did he fight for years to get Milwaukee a team, but when Bud ran the Brewers they were consistently among the best-run franchises in baseball (but don't take my word for it - this comes from the Sporting News).

Your gripe is completely with Wendy. She's the one who ran the franchise into the ground. She's the one who presided over the loss of Paul Molitor, the dismantling of the farm system and the steady slide below mediocrity.

It should not surprise anyone that the franchise started heading downhill almost immediately after Bud gave up control.

I understand the frustration of Milwaukee fans, but let's not forget the history.

As for the name, I love the idea of a Braves uniform tribute with "Hammers." Shame they didn't go there.

Milwaukee Cream Cities

Why? That was the very first baseball team in Milwaukee.

Beers

Hops

Socialists (has elected 2 socialist mayors!)

Brats

Rockers (one of the biggest annual music fests is held in Milwaukee every summer...creatively named SummerFest)

Hogs is a good one someone suggested

Really, Brewers is the best name for a Milwaukee Team. Unfortunatly that's taken.
