Longest tenure with the same NFL team?

Slater

Recommended Posts

Jackie Slater (OT) played 20 seasons with the LA/St. Louis Rams. Is there anyone else that has matched that record, or come close? With free agency today, I don't think we'll see a repeat of that performance any time soon.

The only player I can think of that comes close to 20 years with the same team is Bruce Matthews (OL) who played his entire 19-year career with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Oilers/Tennessee Titans franchise. Matthews retired in 2001 and even in his final year he was able to make it to his 14th Pro Bowl.

Matthews was only 19 seasons. 1983 - 2001. Tying him for second with Jim Marshall of the Vikings. Here are the others that came close to Slater.....

20 Jackie Slater, L.A. Rams, 1976-94; St. Louis, 1995

19 Jim Marshall, Minnesota, 1961-79

19 Bruce Matthews, Houston/Tennessee 1983-2001

18 Jim Hart, St. Louis, 1966-83

18 Jeff Van Note, Atlanta, 1969-86

18 Pat Leahy, N.Y. Jets, 1974-91

FYI... Marshall played 20 seasons but rookie year was with Cleveland

Here are the players who played more seasons, but not with only one team.

26 George Blanda, Chi. Bears, 1949, 1950-58; Baltimore, 1950; Houston, 1960-66; Oakland, 1967-75

21 Earl Morrall, San Francisco, 1956; Pittsburgh, 1957-58; Detroit, 1958-64; N.Y. Giants, 1965-67; Baltimore, 1968-71; Miami, 1972-76

Darrell Green played 20 years with the Redskins from 1983-2002. Heck he was still the fastest guy in the nfl when he retired. I bet you even at 45 he could still outrun half the NFL.

He was at the Pro Bowl skills challenge this year. He finished 2nd overall in the 40 yard dash. He's freakin retired and he finished 2nd!!!

shoot have you seen him lately? He is 45 years old and I'll be damned if he can still pass for 25. He is a freak of nature just like Nolan Ryan was. I saw an interview with Nolan during spring training and they asked him could he still bring the heat. I think he is around 58 years old and joked that he could only throw in the low to mid 90's now. Must be nice :D
