Oldest living NHLer passes

Red Horner, thought to be the oldest living ex-National Hockey League player, died Wednesday in Toronto. He was 95.

A defenseman, Horner played 12 NHL seasons, all of them with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He led the NHL in penalty minutes for eight consecutive seasons, and was considered, along with Boston defenseman Eddie Shore, to be one of the toughest players of his era.

Conn Smythe, the general manager of the Maple Leafs at the time, was said to have Horner in mind when he said: BIf you canBt beat 'em in the alley, you wonBt beat 'em on the ice."

Even though he was a defenseman, Horner was a very effective rusher and playmaker. He scored 42 goals and 110 assists in his career, but his most impressive statistic was penalty minutes: 1,264.

Horner won a Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs, the teamBs first, in 1932, and he captained the team from 1938 to 1940. His teammates included such legendary Leafs as King Clancy, Busher Jackson, Joe Primeau and Charlie Conacher.

George Reginald (Red) Horner was born in Lynden, Ontario, on May 28, 1909. He retired following the 1939-40 season, and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1965.
