Trophies

DEAD!

Recommended Posts

This is my first poll and just wanted to try it out. This is a bit off-topic though. I just want to know which trophy is your favourite based on many factors (design, tradition etc.)

Any explantions to your vote would be greatly appreciated! terima kasih (That's thank you in Indonesian :D )

Hmmm, this might turn into an argument ala ESPN's Around the Horn.  I guess I'll take the Woody Paige like character:

"Why do I always have to straighten you guys out!"  (one of his quotes, I'm not really trying to tick you guys off.

You gotta pick the Stanley Cup.  How many stories has this trophy have?  There's the Adam Deadmarch, the Guy Carbonneau doing the I'm-stupid-and-drop-the-Cup-into-a-pool-and-put-a-nice-dent-in-the-100-year-old-Cup, the missing Cup, the Blackhawk fan stealing the Cup, yada yada yada.  This 110-year old treasure is sweet.

Paging Mr. Kellerman, that's 7 points for me.

The Grey Cup gets my vote.

Other leads with... 100%! Yes, the joys of being the first voter.

OH NO! I actually forgot about the Grey Cup? Figures, I live in Toronto (well not exactly!) :D Oh yeah! I just picked the Stanley Cup. Why not? It's the oldest trophy in North American Sports. Unlike the NBA, NFL, MLB, the Cup is unique and is not replicated year after year (in its full size, I think they make small replicates).

Had it not been for the Stanley Cup, I would have chose the FIFA World Cup, just based on the popularity of soccer.

I saw, I came, I left.

Re the Stanley Cup:

I remember back when the NY Rangers won the Cup, a few players went on a local television news program in the afternoon one day, bringing the cup with them.

This was back when David Letterman was on NBC, and his show was taped in the studio across the hall from Channel 4's news studio, and Letterman taped at 5:30 pm -- right during news time.

Well, Dave decided to sneak across the hall, and somehow he was able to grab the Cup without anyone at Channel 4 seeing him, and he kept it on his desk for his show that evening.

After a while, some NBC security people and the Rangers players figured it out, and they burst into the Letterman show to get the Cup back.

It has to be the World Series Trophy. Not so much because of the trophy itself, but because of the rich history that it represents. Just seeing it makes you think of Mantle ripping up his leg in '51 or the Pirates shocking the Yanks in '60, or Lolich winning 3 games in '68 and killing the Cards who were up 3-1 before losing 4-3, or Fisk waving it fair in '75 even though they lost game 7, or '86 when Buckner let it go through, or 2001 when Gonzalez did the impossible and and got a game winning hit off of Rivera. Since this message board is on detroithockey.com, I figured that I would be the only one to vote World Series... Plus I'm the only one here who hates hockey  :D

You mean the World Series trophy of the current era, the design that existed from the 1970's to 1999 or so, or the various trophies and pennants that were handed out prior to that? BTW, in the years you list of "rich tradition," (prior to 1970, anyway) there was no WS trophy - just a pennant.

Realize it or not, but the WS trophy is a relatively new (and ever-changing) award. My personal fave is the Grey Cup (so I voted "other"), but of those listed above I'd pick the Lombardi Trophy. While not the oldest, the largest or the most prestigious worldwide (the World Cup has that honor), it is perhaps the most ornate - a simple design written on a table napkin, that is perhaps the best looking of the bunch.

From my standpoint, the Stanley Cup has it all: history, tradition, aesthetics and meaning.  I'm Canadian.  I bet if you ask any Canadian kid who has ever picked up a hockey stick, they've drifted off to sleep with thoughts of holding the Cup above their heads.  I'm not meaning to downplay the significance of Americans or Europeans.  It's just that that's the one thing that virtually all kids have seen and can associate with.  For some reason, it doesn't leave as you get older.

Yeah, I know. That's why I said "Not so much because of the trophy itself, but because of the rich history that it represents" I know that the trophy is fairly new, but I think that the World Series is the best championship, and the new trophy represents that. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear in the first post...

Stanley Cup.  Hands down.  It's old, it's beautiful, it's sacred.  Baseball you got that little dinky thing with the flags, NFL you've got a little football on a stand, basketball, well, I don't know what basketball has, but it's bad I'm sure.  Then you've got the Stanley Cup, now that's a trophy.  The MVP awards in hockey are bigger than the other sports champion awards.  And, like jkrdevil said, you get your name on it, which is too cool. The cup is as amazing and huge as the accomlishment it represents.  Also, the cup is by far the oldest of the trophies, so it's got more history than all the others combined.

Actually, the Stanley cup started as the bowl at the top, but it's grown to the monster sized thing it is today.

Looks like the Stanley Cup is clearly the winner! Not even Florida can do anything to screw with the results! :D

I'd really like to hear from anyone outside North America for their opinion!

Hey, remember that French soccer championship trophy? Okay, maybe not!  :D

I saw, I came, I left.

I know you American types might not have thought of it by my vote goes to the British FA Cup soccer trophy. Its the Cup every british kid dreams of lifting and its got a pretty good design as well!

I laways think the Stanly Cup looks a bit sill, tiny little cup on HUGE base! Ah well guess I am in  the minority on that one!!!!
