new Michigan road jerseys

As a diehard (and we are talking DIEHARD) Ohio State fan, these jerseys couldn't make me any happier. They now look like your local high school who just changed their jerseys because they wanted The Swoosh* on it. And the number is clearly an attempt to be more like THE Ohio State University. Good job, Michigan...I suppose if you can't beat the Buckeyes, you can attempt to be them.

*(The Swoosh is, of course, a registered trademark of Phil Knight Inc. and may not be used in a bad manner unless expressed written consent.)

n4p- please elaborate, how are they trying to be like OSU? Also, OSU is rumored to be checking out alternates in grey or black. You hear anything about that? I think it would be for the 2006 season. I've seen some prototypes, but nothing has been announced. I wish OSU would go back to the big shoulder numbers, like during the Hoying years. Those were better than the current jersey. Regardless, both the UM and OSU jerseys are classics.

Excuse me, but how, pray tell, is the number any more like Ohio State's? They kept them exactly the same, just moved them down to the sleeve on the roads. OSU's are on the shoulders. Not that your post doesn't make sense, I mean why wouldn't Michigan wanna be like you, the team we make our bitch every year...... <_<

I don't like the maize stripe on the shoulders.

Also, what in the heck is up with the design of these jerseys? The body is made of shimmersheen nylon with the lower part of the jersey and shoulders being mesh. What happened, the plant got the directions mixed up?

You mean the team the team that has beaten you three of the last four years? Don't turn this into an OSU/UM bloodfest. It's just going to get the thread graveyarded. That said, I think the "Miami Stripe" looks strange on a Michigan jersey; one that's been traditional as far back as I remember. I like moving TV numbers to sleeves because I think it is more attractive in most cases. They really are not like Georgia's, though, which have no piping. Although I think they should have gone that route and not given in to the piping trend. Props to Georgia, boo to Clemson, Michigan, etc.

Plaese stick with the maise pants please!

That too. I'm not a big fan of the navy pants they sometimes wear on the road. At least, I think I have seen them in navy pants on the road several times.

We've never worn navy pants. White for a while in the 70s, never navy.

It looks more traditional and I have to say compliments the helmet better than last year's jersey. Though I think the previous one to the M sleeve uni was better than either one.

More traditional? That must be why it has yellow piping on the shoulders then. :P

Really? I could have sworn I've seen a few games where Michigan have worn navy pants on the road.

never seen U of M in navy pants either. as long as I've known, they've always worn maize pants.

it's probably just the lighting for the photo, but they look cream as opposed to white, ala sf giants home unis, which i always felt would look great on football whites

It's the lighting. I picked up an authentic today to check it out. Basically, it's the Miami Hurricanes jersey, only instead of the insets on the side, they just used the piping. The half mesh is real, real weird. Wearing it, there's no MICHIGAN branding on it, and it almost feels like a fashion jersey. I'm sure that's because it's new, and there's no recognition of it. Not a fan of them changing the home unis to this style (sans piping though).

Never navy, but the comment on white is correct. In fact, ESPN classic often shows their Ohio State game from I believe 1973 where they wore all white at "The Horseshoe". I have no problems change, although I did like the block "M" in the road white. I will just chalk this up to fabric technology. Stitched numerals are always better over screened ones. Good to see that the majority of the traditional powers now have gone away from screened numerals. OU, Alabama, USC, Michigan, Ohio State and ND are now stitched. Texas needs to, but they still have those Earl Campbell/Archie Griffin tearaways.

Remember a few season ago when Colorado and Oregon had a Nike jersey with a cool suit? Causing then Miss. St. coach Jackie Sherrill to cause a stink that Nike would make something for Oregon, and not for his school, if not all schools? What became of that?

I'm not sure I understand the way the materials are put together, especially with the shoulder material running down the front of the jersey like a bib. Because of the way your shoulderpads run down over the front of the chest, that's the part of the body that gets the hottest and most uncomfortable while playing- precisely where you would want mesh, to help it breathe.

I really dislike Michigan. However, I always thought they had one of the best looks in college football, and I especially liked how their roads were so different from their homes (kind of like the Detroit Tigers). Now they've lost a lot of what makes them distinctive. I think this is a definite downgrade.

One more thing- Presumably, much of this is motivated by Nike and U of M looking to sell more jerseys. However, I get the sense that the way this jersey is constructed will make it look pretty ridiculous as a fashion shirt. I'm not sure this really works.

As a Michigan grad and huge fan, I will throw in some thoughts:

-I liked the current road uniform with the block "M" better. It made use of yellow/maize more liberally. I really don't like the Miami-like yellow piping.

-These remind me of the 70s-80s-s Michigan road uniforms that were nearly devoid of maize.

-The home jerseys are classic. However, I've seen the new ones with the sewn on numbers in the store. I liked the heavier screened numbers better for some reason. Probably the only case where I've like screened better.

-To the OSU fan. Don't make this a contest. Michigan and OSU are steeped in tradition and are great football programs. Both have nice uniforms too. Just enjoy the rivalry.

-As for blue pants, I think blue pants would look good matched up with the road white jersey.

That is DEFINITELY the University of Miami style that they wore last year. Obviously the colors/numbers are different, but the general style is that of which the 'Canes had. Mind you this is coming from a Gators fan...last season I turned to my buddy who was a UM fan and was like "Dude, Miami had some nice jerseys these new ones are aweful!" He agreed. Now I say the same thing about Michigan. IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!!!
