You know a team is cheap when ...

So I guess that makes the Yankees even cheaper since they don't use names at all.

A little slow there Dirty.

I'm doubting very many major league teams, if any, do recycle their jerseys.

Actually many low minor league (A and rookie) use their MLB affiliates' names, and they do, in fact recycle jerseys.

They may use older ones, even previous styles, but they do use them.

Also, in Spring training, ALL minor league teams wear the MLB unis. They don't wear the individual minor league team unis for spring games. (yes there are minor league spring games...although you won't find anyone that has actually attended one). During these games the minor league camp players most often wear recycled MLB unis.

Another place they wear them is the Arizona Fall League.

If you're not familiar with this, each MLB team sends 5 or so top prospects to the Phoenix area in October and November. There are 6 teams that play for 2 months with a championship game the week before Thanksgiving.

Players in the AFL wear MLB unis, and most often they are recycled. There is an old lady in Scottsdale that does ALL the stitching for the Fall League (In 2003 she spelled Clint Barmes name as Barnes and he wore it all season like that)

Since we haven't had NHL training camp in about a year and a half, maybe somebody can answer a question.  Do the Red Wings still put names on a straight nameplate with block lettering in the preseason?

Read the thread...

I read the thread - I wanted to know if it was still the block letters on a straight nameplate or if they at least started making an attempt to come close to the regular season jerseys.

Read it again... :P

And the Wings do use a nameplate in the preseason.

My 4 cents:

1. I have a Radke jersey the produced for him, but he never wore (perhaps because the "TC" patch was replaced by the current patch). It is my best jersey by far. Very sharp. But that nameplate is its big flaw. I agree that with no pinstripes, it would not matter, but with pinstripes, it is kinda bush.

2. I bought my wife a game worn Jason Zent flyers jersey (Zent was one of her favorite Wisconsin players and since he was an NHL nobody, it was fairly cheap). It was a preseason jersey (so maybe they don't do this with regular season jerseys). Clearly there had been a longer nameplate on the back previously, so at least two players wore that jersey.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I've heard of NHL and actually MLB (at least in preseason) (and years ago, not recently) actually velcro-ing the name plate to the jersey so that they can be interchangable. I actually remember seeing a little thing on this back in the day (I think on TWIB or something.)

Some MLB teams do, some teams dont. Likewise for the NHL. The Marlins and Florida Panthers switched from having a name plate to not having one. No NBA team does, all NFL teams do. I guess there is no real standard except what the team likes. I think it looks better with. Especially with pinstripes because it makes the name stand out more and it's easier to read from far away.

It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running." - Unknown | 🌐 Check out my articles on jerseys at Bacon Sports 🔗

... they sew the player's name to a piece of cloth instead of sewing each letter to the uniform itself. It looks so bush league.

Since this apparently started out as an attempt to bash the Phillies for being cheap:

Those photos posted by BigEd kind of wipe out the ol' "nameplates are used for ease of centering the name" arguments. I don't think it would be easy to center "Lieberthal" without using a nameplate, but the Phillies do it anyway. Personally, I have no problem with nameplates. Those old Dodger pics posted a few pages back look terrible, like an amateur slow-pitch softball league.

As far as I know, based on what I've seen in equipment rooms (college and pro), the stitching is done by equipment managers or outsourced. I highly doubt any of it is done by the manufacturer of the jersey. I could be wrong, though.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.
