buzzcut
Uh guys, the NFL has been doing it for over 8 years, ever since Nike, Reebok and Puma logos started appearing on the sleeves of NFL jerseys.I wasn't horrified.I didn't faint or pass out, or shriek at how the NFL and it's jerseys had been forever soiled. I wasn't refering to uniform makers and their logos on uniforms, I'm refering to someone like Pepsi or Coke putting their logos on uniforms. If this board were like Congress, there'd be legislation outlawing ads on uniforms(which at this point would pass real easily). Yac12
I wouldn't mind if it is a small logo of the company that makes the uniform. AKA how baseball and football have the logos.
thegreytist
True. Who would want to buy a Brett Favre replica jersey with "Miller Lite" patches stuck to the shoulders?? Loads of people will still buy the jerseys regardless of what's on them. People buy soccer jerseys all the time with Vodafone, O2, Carlsberg, etc plastered on them. It won't change anything, except jerseys might change more often with sponsors.
pcgd
True. Who would want to buy a Brett Favre replica jersey with "Miller Lite" patches stuck to the shoulders?? Who WOULDN'T want that? Look at european soccer, fans buy the shirts with the logo on them without batting an eye. We buy them here in the states too (euro soccer shirts). More than likely what would happen is similar to the AFL jerseys (both Aussie Rules and Arena) where when you buy a jersey, it doesn't have the small 3" x 2" patch on it. If you want, get them on there. Oh well.I don't like it persay, but it is a business. Sometimes we forget that. If you had someone offer you 20 million bucks to put a 3" patch on the uniforms of your team, there is a pretty good chance, you are going to take it. Even more so if you lost money the year before. If you could watch the NHL right now if they had logos on their jerseys...would you? If it helps stop lockouts (which in theory it could, the owners get more money and won't complain about them offering players too much money.) I'm for it. If you check the club shops you will see that they will say it will have the sponsor's logo etc.etc. . What you can customize, in some cases, is the number on the back of the jersey. I'm sure you can buy ones without the sponsor's logo, it's just won't be made by the clothing manufacturer of the club. I saw, I came, I left. Sterling84
Theoretically, I am extremely against this. But I'm a realist and if it happens, I only hope it happens tastefully. If it starts here, it'll start with hockey. Baseball will be the last to fall cause of all the uber-traditionalists.What's weird is......I actually really love that I have the "team issue" Chevy patch on my Moose authentics.I totally gloss over the NASCAR-like implications because I have exactly what the team wears. And that's the kicker. We're forgetting that kids won't care. They want to look just like their heroes. Regardless of what those heroes wear. BBTV
I hate the idea of paying money to advertise someone's product.Yes, I realize that technically wearing a jersey is a form of advertising, but that's different. Miller Lite should pay me if I'm going to be a billboard for them. That's why I don't wear shirts that say "POLO" or "HILFIGER" really big accross them. There's no reason for it. You can't buy athletic shoes without the logos and for whatever reason, that has been a part of the culture since before I was born.I don't think it is hypocritical at all to wear your reebok shoes and say, "I don't want to wear a shirt with a giant Hilfiger ad on it."I wore a couple things like that in high school, but I don't want to anymore, even if my shoes have swooshes. Joely
Business might be business, but as an englishman, i hate the fact that over here all sports have sponsors on them. I love the fact that the US unifroms DON'T have anything on them, the team name is the biggest emphasis rather than a brand name! Also changes in sponsor (it happens all the time) makes it possible for team to justify changing their uniforms on a regular basis (every 2 years in the premiership), its not a good idea, and the teams in the US have enough money in the first place! NO offense intended, I trust you know what I mean and that you know, that I know, it's 100% yours. OnWis97
Despite my first post I REALLY DO NOT want this to happen. But since it will, you should have to have a sponsor that fits with your name.Minnesota Twins: Twinkies or Doublemint GumNew York Yankees: Yankee ClipperMIlwaukee Brewers: Well this would be VERY beneficial to themMiami Heat: Carrier Air and HeatingDetroit Pistons: Any of the Big ThreeNew York Jets: Boeingetc. Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse." OMMF
Let's see.Sports franchises are businesses. Businesses try and make money. Selling ad space earns revenue.Am I missing something? Besides the notion that things must stay static to preserve some sort of "heritage?" Blue ice, ads on jerseys, stadium naming rights, etc. Why do people believe teams and leagues owe them something? If they make a wrong decision, the fan base will let them know by not showing up. But other than that, you are choosing to be a customer of a company whose purpose is to make money. That's it. Obligations to fan? Zero.
the_cynic
I think not watching a sport just because they have corporate advertising on their uniforms is a little extreme! If you truly love the sport you'll continue to watch it no matter what the uniforms look like. Sterling84
Ah, but don't forget, that picture up there was from a regular season game in JapanI stand corrected. But that doesn't count. The Japanese don't know what they're doing. They hired Tom Selleck to play over there for cripes sake. Why do people believe teams and leagues owe them something? Not to say I disagree with you. But I wager people think they are "owed" something because it's our 9-5in' making them rich the last 20 years for playing a game. That is, in the end, our fault. Just like you said. But Joe Lunchpail shucks out $300 in tickets, parking, and refreshments twice a summer with his family and thinks to himself.."Is it too much to ask to leave XXXX the way it was?" The way it was when I could afford to come to 30 of these a summer with my dad...yada yada.I agree with you. Bidness is bidness. BUt I don't find fault with people expecting to be shown a little respect or courtesy. So far sports have been fairly insulated from real fan blowback. Collosal, organized boycotting etc. And if baseball or any other sport want to keep pushing us and pushing us let them go ahead. Sooner or later it'll be teams named after companies, with only corporate seats in the building and maybe just maybe people will discover it's more fun to go hiking or learn an instrument or heaven forbid PLAY baseball yourself than to watch spoiled millionaires kick dirt at each other. And then the wheels would come off their enterprise pretty quick. Cause if a stadium ain't "the place to be" then the TV money goes away and then the corporate suites dry up too. I just hope I'm around to see it. That's the deal in Japan. The official team names have the corporate tie-in. It's somewhat confusing, espcially with the Nippon Ham Fighters. For years, I though it was some vegetarians behind the name. But imagine the possibilites in North America. Had Labatt's still owned the Blue Jays, they would be known as the "Labatt Blue" Jays. Perhaps we could have the Anaheim "Hell's Angels", or the Denver Golden NuggetsOne more thing...... Jack Elliot rules! I saw, I came, I left.
