pcgd
Don Mattingly was told to shave his Sideburns and mustache, but I can't remember if he retired instead. It was the yankees whoever it was.Or was that just a simpsons episode?
zoneranger
I remember the Reds used to be really strict about facial hair. So I'll guess....Johnny Bench.
CaolinaJoe
I remember the Reds used to be really strict about facial hair. So I'll guess....Johnny Bench. I think "future" in the question eliminates Bench. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom ofspeech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given usthe freedom to demonstrate. And it is the soldier who salutes theflag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, andwho allows the protester to burn the flag."Marine Chaplain Dennis Edward O' Brien

That was a simpson's episode. Mr. Burns asked him to shave his sideburns when he didn't have sideburns.Mattingly retired because of a bad back not because of facial hair. When he first started with the Yankees he had to shave but if you look at footage of his later years with the Yankees he has the 'stache.

When he first started with the Yankees he had to shave but if you look at footage of his later years with the Yankees he has the 'stache. That really happened when Yankee manager Stump Merill wanted Mattingly to cut his long hair or be benched. The Simpsons episode "Homer At The Bat' 8F13, just pariodied it with Mr. Burns telling Mattingly to trim his sideburns, which was different. THE TOUGHEST S.O.B. IN THE CCSLC!Satan Lives! NJTank
Well he is a Hall of Famer now but when he retired he was a future Hall of Famer, the team is the Reds but its not Johnny Bench. This player never played for the Reds refusing to do so because of their no facial hair rule which they had up until the late 90s. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com

NJTank
Correct in 1986 the Reds were the only team to offer the legendary reliever a contract but required him to shave so Fingers chose to retire instead. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com
mac
I'll throw in another reds facial hair question. Who was the player that forced the reds to change their facial hair policy and what year?

NJTank
It was strange taht it lasted so long in the first place, but they had Jeff Reardon and he unlike Fingers opted to shave, so it used to be intresting when someone famous for a beard joined them and had to shave. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com
