I am honestly not surprised that this comes from a Dodger fan. I've read numerous accounts of what goes on at Dodger Stadium, from the importance of the beach ball and the wave to the booing of security guards who break up fistfights.

The real reason LA took the names off their jerseys...

...DODGER FANS CAN'T READ.

(But don't they wish they could!)

Baseball has the fewest number of people on the playing surface at one time with nothing blocking their faces, no pads to hide their bodies and the least amount of movement.

Basketball players don't wear pads or helmets.....

Your point?

Basketball players need names on their jerseys less than baseball players do. Football and hockey are the only of the big 4 that "need" names on the back.

10 = 10

Don't try and start something where there isn't anything.

Basketball still has fewer people. They can only have a maximum of 10, whereas besaball can have up to 13 (not counting the guy on the on-deck circle, or any on-field bullpens).

My biggest problem with this is that they left the numbers the same size. They look retarded with the little a-- numbers on the back. MAKE THEM BIGGER, MCCOURT!!!

Sorry, I needed to get that out. I feel better now.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

I can not believe you people. First off, I'm going to say this first.

Every Team in Major League Baseball Should Wear Their Names On The Back!

When one team has them, and the other team dosen't, it looks very unprofessional for the two teams and MLB. So you say if you don't know the players, learn them. That's kinda hard to do for the casual fans. You say look at the scoreboard? If you're at home, most broadcasters won't give you anything about the player (at least here in Texas) if you're watching at home.

The point is it's stupid not to have names on the back of jerseys because not everyone knows the players, it looks down right sloppy, and it takes away recognition from the players, especialy our young guns here in Arlington.

and it takes away recognition from the players

The name on the front should be way more important than the name on the back.

A-MEN!

Personally, I like the no names on the home jersey look....sheesh, if you're that much of a fan and go to the home games, you should KNOW who's on the team...

i know one thing, as long as the guy has a number, they're probably gonna tell ya on TV. now if the guy has no number, like I saw one time in spring training a while back, then there's a problem :D

I'm gonna go with the "Hershiser, Valenzuela, and Lasorda all had their names on the backs" stance on this one.

"BUT IT LOOKS SO CLEAN!"

What if they slide in the dirt? I bet they don't look so clean now.

No, no names look horible because one team wears them, and the other dosen't. And don't give me that "team" bull, if you did something, you deserve credit. You have a team, but it takes individual players to make a team great. How many of you would know Kevin Mench, Michael Young, Hank Blaylock, Alfonso Soriano, Mark Teixiara, Rod Barajas, Richard Hidalgo, Chris Young, Kenny Rogers, Chan Ho Park, and the others that I can't remember on the Rangers roster, if you saw them on TV. Numbers get mixed up.

Hell, I should know. Being a broadcaster, not having names is a great problem for High Schools. I know my players, but when other teams come in, I have to shuffle through my notebook and computer in a game where everything is on the fly. It is a real problem.

The fact is that even though you may want it, people who watch the game on a semi-regular basis to the casual fan will hate it because they don't know who's who on the field. Eventuly, MLB will require all teams (except for the Red Sox and Yankees of course  ) to put all names on the back for marketability reasons. If you don't know the players, what keeps you watching?

Well, all of you who pine for the "clean" look of no names are wrong.

NFL: Names.

NBA: Names.

WNBA: Names.

The late NHL: Names.

MLS: Names.

MISL: Names.

MLB: Head in very dark place.

This is what the rulebook should say:

(1) A player's last name shall be printed in a contrasting color above the number on the back of all game uniforms.

(2) Teams without player names on their game uniforms shall be fined $25,000 per active player per game or the team's total payroll per game, whichever is greater.

Things happen on the fly in baseball? (no pun intended)

If you don't know the players, what keeps you watching?

Uhh, love of the sport? Just a guess there.

Great attitude. Let's cater to the 272 "true baseball fans" in the U.S. and tell potential baseball fans, postseason fans, TV and everybody else that we don't give a damn what they think. No wonder baseball is dying.
