Burnett trade update:

The three way deal is dead according to Peter Gammons.

Notes:

-O's want Marlins to pay 50% of Lowell's remaining contract. The Marlins do not want to do this. They would be better off keeping Lowell. This is what is holding-up the deal.

-O's looking to do an ONLY AJ deal. If this is the case and no one wants to take on Lowell this could open the door for other teams.

-Red Sox and White Sox might be in on this deal again.

-Red Sox do not want Mike Lowell PERIOD.

-Marlins fans in general agree we'd love to get a deal done with the White Sox.

-Marlins owner Jeff Loria not enthused about making a deal with John Henry.

-Jays out of contention for AJ. JP Riccardi says he not giving AJ 40/4.

Here's the rumor mill for July 22nd:

A.J. Burnett, SP, Marlins

Teams Interested: Orioles, Tigers, Red Sox, White Sox, Padres, Blue Jays, Angels, Dodgers

The Deal: As of now, the Marlins are insisting that any deal for Burnett MUST include Mike Lowell. The Red Sox and Orioles want no part of Lowell, and the Blue Jays, Padres, Tigers and Dodgers have similar feelings, or want to sign Burnett to a cheap extension he has no interest in. While the Red Sox have stated they will trade for Burnett without signing an extension on him, the Marlins have balked at being sent Joe Mays in the deal. It seems that the White Sox are the best fit for Florida, possibly sending Brandon McCarthy and Damaso Marte to Florida for some package centering around Burnett.

Frontrunner: White Sox

Jeff Weaver, SP, Dodgers

Teams Interested: Orioles

The Deal: The O's are partially looking past Burnett already, and have contacted DOdgers GM Paul DePodesta about a trade. DePodesta seems unwilling to make any moves until the trade deadline, assessing if there's any hope for LA to contend.

Frontrunner: None.

Alfonso Soriano, 2B, Rangers

Teams Interested: Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Indians, Padres, Twins, Giants

The Deal: Soriano has statedx that he would not embrace a move to center and would rather stay and play 2B for the young squad in Texas. Only teams with serious starting pitching to trade have a shot at Soriano. The Mets are the only squad with starting pitchers to trade(Ishii, Glavine), but the consensus is Soriano will remain in Texas.

Frontrunner: None.

Jason Schmidt, SP, Giants

Teams Interested: Red Sox, Yankees, White Sox, Rangers, Nationals

The Deal: If it comes down to a salary dump, all five teams in the race have enough to trade for Schmidt. But it doesn't seem likely. If the team plans on contending next year, it needs an arm to build on, and that arm is Schmidt's.

Frontrunner: None.

Johnny Damon, CF, Red Sox

Teams Interested: Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox

The Deal: This would be, obviously, a free-agent signing. It seems that Damon will go to Chicago for the atmosphere if the Yanks and Red Sox offers are comparable or a little below Chicago's. In the same spot, he could stay with Boston, where he loves playing. He has the atmosphere in ChiTown, and the familiarity with the BoSox - for the Yanks to get him, they're gonna have to overpay for him.

Frontrunner: Red Sox

Eric Byrnes, CF, Rockies - Randy Winn, CF, Mariners - Juan Pierre, CF, Marlins - Juan Encarnacion, RF, Marlins - Endy Chavez, CF, Phillies - Gary Matthews, Jr., CF, Rangers

Teams Interested: Yankees

The Deal: The Yankees have been scouting outfield help all week, and it seems a lock that one of those six names will be in pinstripes before July 31. Most of the names have another attached - the Yankees might trade straight up for Chavez, but all the others may be multi-talent deals. The Yanks might ask about Shawn Chachon along with Brynes, about Eddie Guardado along with Winn, about Alfonso Soriano along with Matthews Jr, and A.J. Burnett along with Pierre or Encarnacion. Brynes seems a prime candidate, but the Yanks might try and swing a deal that would send Carl Pavano back to Florida along with Felix Rodriguez, in an exchange for Burnett and Lowell - the question is - do the Yanks have anything to add to that deal that would also bring Encarnacion or Pierre? probably not.

Frontrunner: Eric Brynes to the Yankees for Double-A and Single-A prospects.
