The player to be named later was eventually John Halama, for those wondering.  Not bad to get three solid major league contributors in return.  The trade was a PR nightmare here in Seattle at the time, but the M's ended up getting an All Star pithcer, a starting shortstop and a valuable lefty that could start or go long relief.  How many times do you look back on a trade a few years later and see a minor leaguer who never amounted to anything?  Just my Woody Woodward praise for the day!  (M's GM at the time)
