SEMOSTLfan
ok im not totally sure if this belongs in the logos forum but what the hey. I have several 59/50 hats and I just bought a new Cardinals alternate one today so I was wondering if anyone has a solution on how to wash these things. I washed my Red Sox one (bought it last season before they killed us in the series) and my cardinals home one in the washing machine but it seemed to mess up the shape of the hats plus they shrink pretty bad. I know ideally you should keep them dry if possible but face it they get dirty. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Kevin World Champions: 1926 1931 1934 1942 1944 1946 1964 1967 1982 2006
redsfan39
if you take a shower while wearing it, it will wash it and form fit it snugley to your head. or you can buy a "holder" that snaps over your hat and keeps it shape while it is washes

oakland ehs
just handwash it, kinda scrubbing it a bit instead of using a lot of water, and put it on your head before it's completely dry, then wait for it to dry.worked with my a's hat, and it was soaked in sweat previously. A couple machine washes and you'll destroy it.To mold it, wait for a nice sunny day. Throw it on in the shower for 5 minutes (water only, no soap/detergent). Wear it around and let it dry on your head; it'll mold snugly to your head. Repeat two or three times, and you're good to go. The only thing you should need to clean is if the white headband gets all nasty and sweaty - a little liquid hand soap rubbed in with a washcloth and rinsed with water ought to be enough to get the funk out.My oldest 59Fiftys are 14 and 20 years old, and they still look great. Fit really well, too. "Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... no97
It's getting where this belongs in the FAQ file... Seems we can't go a month and someone asks the same question...Ok, here we go, again, The only part of the cap you realy should wash is the sweatband. And that should be the hand washing part. You can use an old toothbrush and some hand or dish-soap, and then wear the hat until it's dry. If you're trying to remove dust from a cap that's been sitting on a shelf too long, either a lint brush or tape rolled around your fingers is the best bet. Other than that, you realy shouldn't try to wash the cap at all. All you're going to do is ruin it. Besides, the dirt/filth shows the character (a true fan has an old cap, not one they just bought at the souvineer stand) of the cap, and hence the fan. If you realy want a clean looking cap, buy a new one every year or two...Moose
FiddySicks
my buddy gave me a bunch of his old 5950s yesterday but they were a size 7 but had shrunk even smaller and my head is a 7 1/2 so i said what the hell and i stretched and pulled and washed and bleached the crap out of one of them and now unbeliveably, it fits perfectly. SEMOSTLfan
thanks for your help. sorry if the question was repetitive...these hats are just way to expensive to ruin by trying ot clean them....at least for a broke college kid. pcgd
I would seriously try dry cleaning them. The more I think about it, that's what you do with items you don't want to shrink, or are too delicate to be in the washing machine/dryers that are in homes. It can't cost that much when it only costs 10 buck or so to wash a suit. Take it to your local dry cleaner and see what they can do.

Really? $25 is way too expensive for a hat that should last, at least, 10 years (even if you wear it every day)? Hell, skip one night of pizza and beer (ramen isn't that bad, you know), and there's a new hat.Plus, if you're in college now, and just bought the hat, you likely won't need to wash it until you're out of college anyway, unless you're on the 10 year plan. It's not supposed to look "new" forever...Moose
tater
Honestly, why would you want a clean cap? While you're at it, why don't you leave the holographic sticker on, leave the brim straight, and rooster it off to the side of your head.I don't like wearing a cap in public until I've played in it a couple times. While you're at it, why don't you leave the holographic sticker on, leave the brim straight, and rooster it off to the side of your head. shoot, I see that all the time-mugs hats still got the New Era sticker on, brim's straight, hat's too big and true to form, it's cocked to the side. Nats fans just see the straight brim every time Chad Cordero comes in shoot, put me with some other brothers and my hat'll stand out-it'll be the only one with no stickers, the only one with a curved bill, and lastly the only one worn the way you're supposed to wear it-forwards. I mean, I don't own anything related to being a catcher, so I stopped wearing hats backwards a long time ago. And I don't work as a clown of any sort, so I never wear it with the brim on the side. See Red
I don't wash my hats, but try to keep them as clean as possible for as long as I can. Though the benefit to a dirty hat is that girls don't generally want to take my hat and wear it like they do when it's clean.
