New Syracuse Orange football helmet

Yeah, it was announced last spring when the Orange unveiled their new uniforms. Go to the SU website. I believe all they did was add numbers to the sides of the helmet, like when Jim Brown (greatest running back in football, ever, end of discussion), Ernie Davis and Floyd Little wore the #44 jersey (soon to be retired).

:P LET'S GO ORANGE! :P

Dave Wannstedt couldn't even bother to dress up for the munch. Nice job. At least his porn-stache is already in mid-season form... :P

As for the new SU helmets, I like this. A lot of teams used to do this, and besides Alabama and Georgia Southern, there aren't a lot of teams doing this anymore. Not sure if the gray facemask says "old school" or "bad idea" yet, I'm going to reserve judgement until they hit the field. Pitt's helmets are a definite upgrade as well.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

Wanny's probably got more money in the bank that all the rest of the guys combined, good grief man. Even "Sad Sack" Schiano from Rutgers looks sharper. Not that anyone will be able to say during the reg. season.

He is used to wearing "NFL clothes".

When was the last time you saw an NFL coach in anything but a product-marked (Reebok, Nike, adidas, etc.,) piece of clothing?

Didn't one coach get turned down by the NFL last year for asking if he could wear a coat and tie on the sidelines?

Gentlemen, the institution we now call Syracuse University had its beginnings in the village of Lima, NY, located on Route 15A directly south of Rochester in the 19th century. The school was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church (the Methodists). As the century moved on Methodist officials felt that a more central location was in order for their university so in 1870 the school moved to Piety Hill in the Salt City. Lima was not left without a school as that campus became the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary and stayed open until the early 1950s. The campus was then purchased by the Elim Bible Institute to train pastors for their fundamental Baptist-based denomination. Elim is still going strong.

At first the school colors of SU were (I'm not making this up) Rose Pink and Pea Green. These colors were chosen because they replicated the colors of the morning sunrise over Central New York.

Needless to say they were not popular with the student body. Opposing teams ridiculed the SU athletes unmercifully. It all came to a head in May of 1889. Upon returning from a track meet at nearby Hamilton College, the SU cindermen told school officials that they would no longer compete in pink and green uniforms.

So a committee was set up and after a study they found that orange was a color not then in use by any school as their sole primary color (Princeton began using orange and black in 1880). So after the approval of the trustees and an affirmative vote from the student body, orange became SU's official and only color on June 24, 1890.

Syracuse's use of Orange has two legends associated with it. One is the influence of the Dutch people. The Dutch were the first settlers of New York State (New Amsterdam) and their color and motto was, "oranje booen." Literally translated it means "orange over all."

The other ties the name to the protestants in Ireland in 1795. The Orange Society had ties to the protestant Church of England. The Methodist Church, SU's founding body, is a direct descendant of the Church of England. Therefore the tie-in, albeit a stretch, has merit.

Two early nicknames used by SU were "Bill Orange," a mythical character created by the student dramatic society in order to give the school a live mascot. Starting in 1939 a student, dressed in all-orange and standing on stilts, paraded the sidelines at all SU football games.

The "Saltine Warrior" gave homage to Syracuse's salt industry and to the area's Native American heritage. Syracuse is located in Onandaga County. The Onandagas were part of the Iroquois Confederacy of New York State (Senecas, Cayugas, Oneidas, Onandagas, Mohawks). The Warrior would dress up in full indian regalia and ride his trusty steed around old Archbold Stadium, much as they do at Florida State.

Many longtime SU fans fondly remember Bill Orange and the Saltine Warrior.

LET'S GO ORANGE! :D:notworthy::D:notworthy::D

ed. note- This information largely came from 100th anniversay of SU football book and a book called "The College Names of the Games," by Mike Lessiter c1989

Orange helmets with grey facemasks is just a plain stupid idea.

I have this thing that grey only works as a facemask color if it's a team color.

In this case, I don't even care about that. Ugly is ugly. Get rid of it.

What about these with the gray facemasks? Works well for me. Also...numbers on the side of the helmet. The classic college football jersey.

if they are going to wear throwbacks to the jim brown era then should be forced to go back to orangemen.

Back then, they were known as the Warriors.

The Saltine Warrior.

well then go back to that, but they have to get rid of the ridiculous name they are using now.

Those work OKAY because their is really only one other color, so it's not a couple colors compounded by an odd use of grey.

Nonetheless, they should really use white masks, but I'll let 'em slide.

Even though I have my general rules of design, I'm willing to look at everything case-by-case.

The numbers I do like though.
