Connecticut Defenders Unveil Mascot...

Recommended Posts

For the time being, he's being referred to as "The Defender". However, the team is launching a "Name the Mascot" contest in schools throughout Eastern Connecticut.

The ballclub's selection of an eagle as the team's mascot was reportedly inspired by the United States Coast Guard Barque Eagle, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's training vessel.

Also, I hadn't noticed this during the unveiling of the team's new identity package, but this is apparently one of the Defenders' secondary marks:

I know the secondary logo is supposed to be two crossed submarines, but they look more like two objects of the battery-powered persuation. Perhaps it's marketed towards the often overlooked sports demographic of lonley single women.

I suppose people see what they want to see.

I see two crossed bats more than I see submarines.

The mascot's pretty appropriate. I've been on the Eagle before, it's an impressive Cutter (same thing as a Barque, right?). Just because it's an eagle doesn't mean it's ripping off Philadelphia.

That secondary logo is a matter of perception. And perception is often skewed by environment. Some see submarines. Some see devices intended for sloitary feminine pleasure. Being a Chicagoan, I glanced at the logo and saw two shiny police batons from the '68 Democratic Convention. But, you know, whatever.

It kinda even looks like they left them on

I really hope they keep Tater the Gator around. He made absolutely no sense for Eastern Connecticut, but I grew up with him, and he was an awesome mascot.

Let me ask you this...do you want two submarines colliding? Maybe I'm an idiot, but that seems "less than great" to me....

It's impressive that they got one sub to jump over the other to avoid the collision... :D

Team management has given every indication that they're planning on keeping Tater the Gator around.
