McGwire - (assuming he eventually does get in, I'm not here to argue either way) either the "StL" or the "A's", I think this will fall into the Carter category and the HOF will say OAK even though we all might think STL

That is a tough call. He had a long and mostly distinguished career in Oakland, but he probably isn't in the discussion as a Hall of Famer without the St. Louis years. It could reasonably go either way. <_<

does anybody think it's a load of mularkey that the HOF chooses what team you sport in the HOF? I personally feel it should be up to the player to decide what team they want to represent.

I would have agreed before people started signing contracts with teams stating they'd use their cap. Boggs with a D-Rays cap?

I think HOF should accept what the player wants except in cases like this...

Henderson - if there was ever a guy born to have the blank cap, it's Rickey.

Rickey is going to demand one plaque for every team he played for.

Rickey only demands what Rickey thinks is right. And Rickey thinks that Rickey is the greatest of all time, so Rickey needs more plaques to show how wonderful Rickey was, and so all of Rickey's fans can see Rickey the way they want to see Rickey.

They could make him a cap like the jersey that was made for Gaylord Perry, with the wordmarks of every team he played for embroidered across the front. Or maybe rotating plques.

"Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

Or maybe rotating plaques.

The rotating plaques might be cool for many of the traveling stars - kinda like an old 007 license plate. The visitor could go up to the wall and spin it til they got to the one they liked.

I think there should be more blank or indiscernable caps in the HOF - like the head-shots Topps used in the 60's after a player was traded. I see the Nolan Ryan plaque with the big "T" and it looks a litle odd to me. Not to mention that just the process of making these plaques makes some of the cap logos look a little strange. I also think Reggie Jackson's plaque would look MUCH nicer if they used a younger version of himself from his A's days (not that I think his Yankee career was lesser).

I don't know what they did in the old days but I always thought it was a little odd to see Jimmie Foxx and Lefty Grove in Sox caps - even though he did have some good years in Boston. Sometimes I think they just used the best head-shot they had of the old-timers.

When they have a player who can't pick between teams, or for whom there is no clear answer, they should allow a blank or indeterminate cap.

Catfish Hunter, Johnny Mize and Yogi Berra (who has a profile shot) as among the many players with "blank" caps. I think Gary Carter should have had an image with a backwards helmet, which would have been very appropos and would have made Mets fans, Expos fans, and probably Gary himself happy. The HOF has gotten a little full of itself by now 'requiring' a specific cap, when this was never the case before.

Rickey's cap should feature an interlocking "A" and "H."

If McGwire gets in, he should go in as an Oakland A -- and that's coming from a Cards fan. Yes, he hit his two biggest milestone homers as a Cardinal but he won championships with the A's and that's where he spent most of his career.

mel ott played with the new york giants forever, yet his plaque has him without wearing a cap at all.

btw, i think the bbhof plaque postcards are the greatest collectible ever.

for relatively modest $50, you can buy a whole set, and all you need to do to keep it current is to order postcards for the new inductees in late july each year for a quarter apiece.

i'm a hockey fan first, but the baseball hall of fame is far and away the best sports hof there is.

So wait Boggs is in as a Sox I thought there was a whole big to do about him being in a D-Ray or a Yankee even though i think of him as a Sox as well as "Rocket" but that shows my age.

Also on an unrelated note: how do i make a "buddy icon" like people have the flags etc

OK, the thing im wondering is why does the hall give a flying fu*k whos hat a player wears on his HOF plaque? I mean, why did they throw such a bitchfit that Boggs chose his D Rays cap? At that time there wasnt a single D Ray plaque in the hall, and there were a TON of yankees hats. Are they trying to say if a guy plays his best years with the D Backs or D Rays, but he had maybee a half of a mediocre yar with the Wanks, he has to have that hat in the HOF? (not saying thats Bogg's case) Absolutely retarded.

What are you talking about? Boggs has a Red Sox cap on his plaque, as he should.

Yeah but he wanted to go in as a D Ray. And my bad about that Yankees cap thing, i kinda forgot about his time with Boston. But, there are a lot of Boston hats in the hall as well.

I think the best solution is to have the players not wear hats, or just dont bother with a team logo on the hat at all.

For McGwire, it would be a travesty if he isn't elected to the Hall of Fame first ballot, and something a great deal worse if he's not elected at all.

How can you hold a guy out of the HOF who's only ACCUSED of cheating when known cheaters are in the HOF (mostly pitchers)? I know it's a possibility, but I don't think it's as much of a question as most people think.

As for what team he goes in with, I think McGwire did enough damage, reached enough milestones, and brought enough to the game of baseball in St. Louis that the MLB should not veto STL if that is his choice.

Now, he spent about 2.5 times as many years in Oakland had some really good stats, and own championships there, so I can see where an edge would be given to them, but it's not like Mac came to St. Louis at the bottom slope of his career and just liked it better (if he even did...I just know he liked it, period. No idea if he's ever said or will say which he liked better) and would be choosing it because of that. He did plenty in St. Louis, so I think it's a case where the HOF should listen to his preference.

Plus, of course, I'm a Cards fan, heh.

Thats a very difficult choice right there. I wouldnt mind either one, but i think itd be nice to see him go in with an A's cap, only because of the fact that he did the WS there. I would have said STL because of the Home run record, but thats already been broken, so I think Oakland is the best choice.

You're right - it's not a question at all. He's guilty. His refusal to deny it before Congress confirmed it.

No offense, man, but you have to be a huge homer to pretend that the man is still "only accused."

He had an opportunity to retain his reputation, but he blew it. Innocent men don't miss a chance to proclaim their innocence, and guilty men only want to change the subject. Where again did Mac fit on this scale?

He juiced to set the record. He cheated. He shouldn't be in the Hall, period.
