Damn, Can A Brotha Get A Job?

Allow me to get my Scoop Jackson on for a second...

Now, I realize that Rome wasn't built in a day and change takes time and all that. I also realize that 6 "Brothas" have head coaching jobs--Tony Dungy, Dennis Green, Herman Edwards, Lovie Smith, Marvin Lewis, and Romeo Crennell.

But not counting the Jets trading Edwards to the Chiefs, which was an absolute joke, there were 9 head coach openings this year. Yet none of the jobs have gone to a "Minority." Is this Rooney Rule backlash? Are the ONLY qualified brothas already taken? Am I the only person that sees something wrong here? Now don't get it twisted, at all. Especially you Tank and you too, JQK. I'm not saying that ONLY brothas are qualified. Hell no. Frankly, I'm pissed that Jim Fassel couldn't sniff a job this year and that Ron Rivera hasn't had a press conference somewhere yet! And someone not grabbing Pat Hill from Fresno makes no sense (dude's perfect for the NFL, but I don't blame him for not going pro).

So with Gary Kubiak set to be Houston's next Head Coach and Dick Jauron/Jim Haslett being the front runners in Buffalo, that leaves Oakland as the last chance. Could there be a Black Head Coach in the Black Hole? Old Dirty Bastard Al Davis has always been a maverick and he did hire Art Shell back in the day breaking a LONG drought for brothas.

Greg Blache? Ted Cottrell? Mo Carthon? Donnie Henderson? Anyone? Bueler? Yeah, they've had interviews, but I haven't seen that many tokens since I bought 20 bucks worth in Philly.

Again, twist not, my friends. I'm not saying it's racism, I'm just saying what my boy Keith Sweat told me a long time ago, "Something Just Ain't Right." Let it marinate.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled ball-in-glove hating, excessive poll creating, two and three time requesting, and jacked ass logo concept posting, already in progress. Peace.

I nearly peed my pants laughing so hard when you mentioned Greg Blache as a head coach.

That's funny. Not that you are incontinent, but that you think I actually said Greg Blache should be a head coach. I mentioned him because he was one of the token interviewees from what I remember. If he wasn't, I apologize to him and to you all.

You can now add James Lofton to your token list. But you can't use them to play video games.

The league doesn't care, as long as their rules are followed. It is disappointing in-season favorites like Tim Lewis and Maurice Carthon magically drop off the radar screen. As a Packer fan, I'm still a bit suspect about Mike McCarthy. Not because of his performance with SF and NO. I don't think much of anyone associated with the Ray Rhodes coaching staff. Maybe he'll be great, but it appears on the surface to be better candidates available.

The only ones who point out blacks not getting head coaching jobs in the NFL are those who want to keep racism an issue in this country.

I say the teams should hire the most qualified man for the job, regardless of race, and the NFL shouldn't fine teams because they don't interview a minority candidate.

Greg Blache was a lousy coordinator in Chicago, and milks off Gregg Williams in Washington. All he is nowadays is another black guy to interview to get around the system. I hate this required minority interview, because a lot of second rate guys like Blache get looks merely because they're a minority, not because they're seriously considering them. As more and more black coaches progress, you'll see the number rise sharply eventually. I think if the coaching candidate is good enough, they'll be hired no matter what the race.

As much as a hick Hedley looks up there  (just kidding) i'm going to have to semi agree....the fact is rarely would an NFL team (i say rarely because I'm not niave enough to believe there is no one motivated by racial factors) not interview a possible coach just because he is black...I think its gone beyond that in at least this sport...the six guys you listed at the beginning of your post are examples of just that...3 of those six were in the playoffs this year...but you also have to realize that when it comes to filling a vacancy in a head coaching position teams will look at a few things first....one, what other head coaches resigned or got fired that season...secondly they look at what winning teams' coordinators could they pursuade to be a head coach for them...then they'll look into possibly the NCAA coaching system...so if there is a complaint about that it should be about the NCAA (which I don't know the ratio of black coaches to non black coaches) because other than if you are already associated with an NFL that is were the next shot...I agree that no one should have to interview a minority just because that's the rules...if my team loses a head coach and I want Jimmy Johnson then he'll be the first I interview and if he wants the job then its his...I think its more of an insult to bring a guy in knowing you aren't going to hire him just because you are looking at two other people that have great winning percentages and would want to join your team but you have to go through the show of and interview...I'd find it demeaning...

plainly put if there is a black coach available who hasn't had a winning season his entire career and a white coach who is coming off a lousy season but has had his former team in the post season the five years before then I'm hiring the white guy...and I would do the same if it were reversed...anyone with a brain would do the same...

You tell me when racism stopped being an issue in this country. I must have been sick that day.

Anyway, I'm not saying it's racism. I'm just saying that something isn't right. I honestly would have raised a fuss if a bunch of those retread coaches got hired also.

In a perfect world, I would totally agree that the most qualified person should be hired, especially in the NFL. It's all about merit. I don't think there should necessarily be a mandatory minority interview process because all that's going to happen is that a bunch of people are going to be a token interview.

Kubiak was sought by the Texans the first time around and I believe he took himself out of the running. I think this is more of Bob McNair getting who he originally wanted than stiffing a candidate who is black.

I think it's a bad policy for the NFL to continue this practice. Teams will continue to conduct token interviews just so they don't get fined. Is it really accomplishing what it set out to do? I believe that quality OCs & DCs will get the opportunity for head coaching positions regardless of race or ethnicity.

I think it's pretty clear that blacks simply lack enough knowledge of the intricacies of the game to be effective head coaches.

Oops, did I say "blacks?" I meant to say "chicks."

I think part of the situation this time around is that there wasn't a Tony Dungy or a Lovie Smith in this year's crop of hot assistants. Tim Lewis's name was mentioned somewhat and Carthon came on late but they don't exactly carry the pedigrees that Dungy, Smith, Marvin Lewis and Herm Edwards had at the time they first started interviewing. And let's not forget that it took each of them a while to land their first HC positions. Perhaps this interview season will better prepare guys like Lewis and Carthon for runs at vacancies next time around. I'd love to see Carthon get a HC gig seeing as how he was a member of my favorite NFL squad of all time, the 1986 Giants.

The day guys like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton die are the days when racism will become less of an issue. These guys get paid to whine about whatever some activist group views as a "Whitey keeping down tha man!"-stance some business has, and the day Jesse and Al don't whine are the days they'll be out of a job.

Just think of the backlash these statements would get from Al and Jesse and his ilk:

-"We need more white players in the NBA."

-"I'm gonna start a channel called White Entertainment Television."

-"We're going to start a Million White Man March."

OK wait a second. You say it isnt racism, yet there is still something wrong. So if its not racism because minority coaches arent getting hired, then what is it? So in what your saying is that race isnt a factor, yet theres something wrong because the guy with the darker skin isnt getting hired. Your statement seems to contradict itself a bit there IMO. Either that or your saying that it is racism but your trying to cover yourself by saying it isnt about racism, or maybee im missing something.... And honestly i mean no disrespect, im just not really understanding where your trying to come from.

Bucfan, simply I'm not going to accuse anyone of being a racist. I don't know any of the owners and GMs. I'm not saying that it IS racism...but I'm not saying it's NOT racism either. I'm simply raising awareness and trying to spark conversation. There is no one answer. All of this could just be a huge coincidence.

Hedley, you just seem to have an ax to grind when it comes to this. Doesn't matter what I say, you've already got your talking points lined up. So go ahead, don't pay any attention to what I actually wrote, just go ahead and recite chapter and verse from your manifesto. I'm not Jesse, I'm not Al, I was talking about football coaches, not American society. There's lots I can say, but I'd rather keep it about the coaches.

ASIDE ALERT: Oh, and we TOTALLY need more White players in the NBA! I love me some Adam Morrison and yes, I like JJ from Duke too! I'm getting an Adam Morrison jersey as soon as dude gets drafted unless the Jazz or the Pistons pick him up.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

If you had JJ you'd love him too. Besides UNC doesn't recruit White players anyway...:P

I think Mo Carthon is better than half of the @$$clowns that have been already hired. I think he'll definitely get his soon enough. I remember it took Romeo Crennel forever to get a HC job. League's loss = Patriot gain : )
