Afl's austin "ropers" was a misdirection...

Well, apparently the first "play from scrimmage" for the Arena Football League's Austin expansion team was a misdirection: the squad will NOT be named the Austin Ropers as originally thought.

At a press conference in Austin today, it was announced that the Austin Wranglers will be joining the AFL for the 2004 season. Although the ownership group is waiting for the University of Texas Board of Regents to finalize the lease arrangements for UT's  Frank Erwin Center, both AFL Commissioner David Baker and Wranglers' Majority Owner/President Gregory Feste felt that enough progress had been made to officially announce the team's entry for next season. Incidentally, despite past rumors that the National Football League was not entirely happy about the situation, the team's ownership group includes current NFL players Mark Brunell (Jacksonville), Leonard Davis (Arizona) and Mike Williams (Buffalo). Sports agent Leigh Steinberg will also own a piece of the team.

The Wranglers' logo, uniforms and colors will be officially unveiled sometime in November.

So now there's 19 teams... Do they plan on adding a 20th to make it an even count? And if so, who do you think would get it, considering the owners that have been approved for a team?

I wonder if they'll use the Oklahoma Wranglers logo and unis or make completely new ones.

EDIT: I guess there won't be a 20th this year considering the expansion draft is tomorrow. Just read about it on the AFL website.

i know that columbus is getting a team called the destroyers and there coach is former buckeye head coach earl bruce, but i don't know if that means that there is no longer a team in buffalo.

The Destroyers relocated from Buffalo to Columbus so no, no more Buffalo team. :)

That also boggles me. AFL's website is playing it up like Columbus is an expansion team. "The Columbus Destroyers join the AFL." They were already in the AFL, so how could they join again? I know it's a grammatical technicality but... why not just say "Buffalo moves to Columbus" ?

I guess the AFL wants to downplay the fact that the teams move so darn much. I've noticed that if the team's helmet has a letter for a logo, it is usually the team Name, not the team City. For example, Detroit Fury, Arizona Rattlers, Chicago Rush, Las Vegas Gladiators, etc.

How can one of us end up doing the logo for this team?

I hope the Wal*Mart group can bring a team to St. Louis.

That'd be Bill Laurie (owner of the Blues and their arena the Savvis Center) and Stan Kroenke (part, and probably future majority, owner of the Rams, as well as the hockey and hoops teams in Denver and their arena). They're married to the Walton sisters, daughters of Sam Walton, the founder of Wal*Mart.

Anyway, there was talks of them trying to get an expansion franchise and ressurect the name St. Louis Stampede.

i do too.... so they can be the sabercats' bitches again HAW HAW :P

Please explain how St. Louis can be San Jose's AFL bitch when the only meeting between a St. Louis and San Jose team was a 58-34 win by St. Louis?

OT, but I heard that all four of the Wal*Mart heirs are on the top ten richest Americans list... and that's with the Wal*Mart fortune split four ways. Puts things in perspective a bit, don't it?

Actually, I'm not sure what you mean. If you're talking about Wal*Mart driving all these places out of business, then I respectfully disagree. Me and my mom were talking about it a couple of days ago. If people wanna save the Mom and Pops stores, then go there and pay more when Wal*Mart comes...

And Nick, sorry to butt into your sparring match with the Gentleman from Wentzville, MO.  I just found your comment confusing but now that I know it's part of an inside joke of sorts I'll butt right back out.  :)
