Tanks Super Bowl XL Preview

I have to disagree with you on this one Tank. While I think the Seahawks might cover I don't think they will win. You have to remember the Steelers aren't your usual 6 seed to make a run. Last year they were the 1 seed and this year they would have been atleast a 3 seed and would have won their division had Roethlisberger not gotten hurt in hte middle of the year. Considering that and how much stronger the AFC was to the NFC this year I like the Steelers. I said before the playoffs I thought any AFC team would beat the Seahawks and I still believe that.

The majority of the press is leaning toward Pittsburgh, and I pray for a solid game and a 5th Superbowl for my Steelers, but I certainly recognize how solid the Seahawks are. Leading the league in points and sacks...great O-line, Shaun Alexander, and certainly a lot of heart.

However, I want to remind folks that despite their 13-3 record, they were very beatable on many, many days. An early loss to the Redskins, a late-season loss to the Packers, a tight game against the Rams and a 13-10 win over the Cowboys show that while they are a solid team, they are also very beatable.

C'mon...the Steelers won their last 7 games with the last 3 being road-wins during the playoffs. Rolling over Cincy, Indianapolis and Denver is not something that a team that stumbled over the Cowboys 13-10 would be capable of.

Steelers 31 Seattle 10

I hear you Tank...my point isn't that the Seahawks aren't a great team...it's just that they are beatable. The Rams and the Cowboys are less-than-formidable teams, and the Seahawks barely squeaked by them. These shaky wins make me feel a lot more confident when playing them in SB XL.

Once again, people are underestimating the Seahawks, and even there 13 straight wins(except for the meaningless game VS GB) and they still don't get any credit.

Sure you can talk about the games they squeaked out, but what about the games they dominated? What happened in the NFC Champ game? They shut down a very formiddable team, and yes, I know they really didn't have a RB in the game once Foster was down but Seattle dominated.

What game are you talking about? The one in St. Louis? I'd hope the Rams would be able to keep that game close, considering that was before injuries crippled them, they have the offensive firepower to do it, and Seattle is their biggest rival.

If you mean the one they played in Seattle-no, that one wasn't close at all.

BTW-I can't see the margin of victory being more than 3 on either side. That said-Seattle 31, Pittsburgh 30.

Tank is absolutely right about this game. A 1 seed vs a 6 seed, and the 1 gets 4 points? Ridiculous.

I was saying before the playoffs that the NFC could look terrible in the superbowl, but I never dreamed the Colts, Pats, Bengals, and Broncos would all be watching on tv at home.

The Seahawks have had close games, but they ended in wins. Dallas was the best team not to make the playoffs this year, so no shame is close games with them.

Something to remember is that Pittsburgh was beatable too. They lost to Baltimore for goodness sakes. After squeeking past them earlier in the season. They barely got by San Diego and Minnesota. Sure, Roth was out some this season, but the Steelers are not a mortal lock to win this thing.

I'd take Seattle and the points for sure. I'd probably take Seattle straight up.

SHould be interesting to see how it plays out.

Nice article, Frank. You make an exceptional, and under-reported point about the field type.

Wow, Tank goes with the Seahawks. Amazing.

Just for the record, if the Patriots somehow made it, would you pick against them too??? :D

Well I have nothing against either team in this year's Super Bowl, but I can say this the Seahawks remind me some waht of the Buccaneers a few years ago.

I agree totally with you Tank. Finally someone say some stats without having a East Coast bias. Watching SC and NFL Matchup this week has made me so mad, every time its like, well the seahawks wont be able to handle the steelers D, and they will be in a long day cause the steelers will be able to figure out the seahawks D.

GO HAWKS!

Yes Pittsburgh was a 6 seed but they didn't have the worst AFC record. Pittsburgh went 11-5. They tied the Bengals for the division and Cincy won the tie breaker. 2 out of the 5 games the Steelers lost Roethlisberger didn't play. One of them was the above mentioned Baltimore game started by Tommy Maddox. Had Big Ben stayed healthy they would have beaten the the Ravens. That would have given them the division and the 3 seed. A seed you mentioned would beat the Seahawks. In fact you said the you thought the Pats would beat the NFC champion and Pittsburgh had a better record than the Patriots this year.

Here's a interesting stat mentioned in the Sportsguy Super Bowl article

The six AFC playoff teams went 20-4 against the NFC; the six NFC playoff teams went 9-11 against the AFC.

The AFC this year was much stronger than the NFC.

The fact is the Steelers aren't your typical 9-7 6th seed playoff team. They went 11-5 in the stronger conference with their quarterback out in the middle of the season. They were a 1 seed last year and this year they would have been a 3 or maybe a 2 seed had Big Ben not gotten hurt. I think Seattle might cover and I wouldn't bet the game but I think the Steelers will win the game.

Weakest strength of schedule in the NFL. Without that easy schedule, they probably don't get homefield. The home crowd is all that makes this team Super Bowl caliber. Good team? Yes. But are they, in a neutral stadium, better than the Colts or Broncos are at home? Absolutely not.

Sorry not buying this for one moment...

I'm a big time statistician freak...and this is all I have to say about this subject...

I'll seperate the two schedules to give you a better idea of who had the tougher schedule...

First the Number 1 NFC seeded Seattle Seahawks...

Quality Opponents (10 wins or more)

-Jacksonville (12-4)

-Washington (10-6)

-New York Giants (11-5)

-Indianapolis (14-2)

Mid-Level (7-9 wins)

-Atlanta (8-8)

-Dallas (9-7)

Low End Opponents (6 or less wins)

-Arizona (5-11) played twice

-St. Louis (6-10) played twice

-Houston (2-14)

-San Francisco (4-12) played twice

-Philadelphia (6-10)

-Tennessee (4-12)

-Green Bay (4-12)

Lets say that all low end opposition were wins and everything else were losses...

that equals out to be an 10-6 in which it was good enough this year for Washington's playoffs spot...BTW 6 wins come courtasy of a weak NFC West Division.

Let's examine Pittsburgh's schedule...

Quality Opposition (10 or more wins)

-New England (10-6)

-Jacksonville (12-4)

-Cinncinnati (11-5) played twice

-Indianapolis (14-2)

-Chicago (11-5)

Mid-Level (7 to 9 wins)

-San Diego (9-7)

-Minnesota (9-7)

Low-Level Opposition (6 or less wins)

-Houston (2-14)

-Tennessee (4-12)

-Baltimore (6-10) played twice

-Cleveland (6-10) played twice

-Detroit (5-11)

As you can see it should have been a .500 season for the Steelers...

To further illustrate my point about the Seahawks being "beatable", I want to walk you through their wins by 1 TD or less...

W vs. Falcons 21-18 = squeeked out win #1

W vs. Rams 37-31 = #2

W vs. Cowboys 13-10 = #3

W vs. 49ers 27-25 = #4

W vs. Giants 24-21 = #5

W vs. Titans 28-24 = #6

That, my pro-Seattle friends, is A LOT of wins by 1 TD or less, thus proving that while a great team that had a great season, they played a lot of close games. Close games to vastly inferior teams. Close games to teams that are a fraction of the well-rounded team that Pittsburgh is bringing to Detriot.

As I said earlier, Seattle is a great team and had a great season. However, they are outmatched here and I think we'll see that tomorrow. 31-10. Pittsburgh.

Otherwise, I can eat my humble pie and watch Mike "Craig Stadler's Stunt Double" Homlgren bring the Lombardi Trophy "where the sun don't shine"...Seattle.

I can't wait for the game, and hope it is a great one!

People used that same argument for the 2002 Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State, and look where it got them. Basically my point is this: It doesn't matter how close the victory is, just as long as you get "W" beside your name, instead of "L"

Now does that mean I'm picking the Seahawks? Hell no, I'm picking the Steelers since I feel that if you can beat 3 teams in a row on the road, you should win the Super Bowl.
