Losing the Super Bowl...

First the Flames lose in the 2004 Stanley Cup finals, now the Seahawks yesterday. At least I save myself the money I would be dropping on all the Stanley Cup/Super Bowl champion souvenirs.

My question is this: "What happens to all that stuff they have to have ready for a one game championship like the Super Bowl?" Do they ever turn up on ebay? Is there any additional value to it if it is "one of a kind"? Not that you 'd ever want to wear it...

Actually, I'll ask another question. Did the Steelers get the same Vince Lombardi trophy given to the Patriots last year, or do they cast a new one each year for the winning team to keep forever and ever?

I saw a story a few years back on ESPN about how some of the championship merchandise manufactured but never used goes to Third World countries.

It was odd to see Buffalo Bills Super Bowl Champs, and alike on the heads of kids who had no idea what they were wearing.

I think it is a new trophy every year, as teams display theirs after winning. Although I guess the display one could be a replica. Not 100% on that.

There were pictures I saw either here or on a Flames board back in 2004 of a Calgary Flames Stanley Championship Tshirt on a kid in Africa.

Comic Sans walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve your type here."

Yes, a Reebok official confirmed that last week on Sirius NFL Radio. And he used that same Bills analogy. "Yes, somwhere in third-world country, the Buffalo Bills are World Champions!"

Other stuff is destroyed, he said.... but I do know some of it makes its way to places like Marshall's, TJ Maxx, etc.

As for the Lombardi trophy, I know there's two in the New York Giants' offices. But I don't know if there's one "real" trophy like the Stanley Cup and a replica that goes to the team.

In Green Bay, the "real" trophies are in the Packer offices, while replicas are in the Packer Hall of Fame.

And I remember reading that when Carroll Rosenbloom traded the Colts to Bob Irsay for the Rams, Rosenbloom took the Colts' Super Bowl V trophy with him, so Irsay had to pay to have one made for the Colts' offices.

I posted something similar shortly after USC lost to Texas. I'm happy to see that the NFL and NCAA are so generous. MLB just shreds everything.

The winners of the Super Bowl get a new trophy made by Tiffany's every year. Wether or not there is a single one that goes around every year i dont know. And the thing about the MLB just shreading everything makes me wonder if thats true. Ive seen several people wearing these

There was in article in USA Today on Friday about the Lombardi Trophy, and they cast a new one every year - not the prestegie of the Stanely Cup...(Sorry, I'm bias towards hockey...lol) Anyhow, they make a new one every year, have it at the Super Bowl, then send it back to have the names engraved on it, then it goes back to the team, and stays with them forever....

Sorry, cant find the article online - - but if you have the USA today from Feb 3rd, its in there....

That USA Today story also noted that this year the trophy has changed with the football being actual size.

No, it didn't. The article read:

The trophy is 22 inches tall, weighs about 7 pounds and features a regulation-sized football on top.

Nowehere in the piece did it mention that in 2006 the Vince Lombardi trophy had "changed" so as to now feature a football that was "actual size". The reason? The football atop the trophy has always been regulation size.

The only major thing that has changed about the Super Bowl trophy since its inception is that it was officially renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1970.

I really like to have got some NY Yankees 2004 AL Champs shirt... ;)

I have a dozen.

I'm a Yankee fan who lives in Boston, and my wife (who's a Sox fan) knows someone who works for Twins Enterprises (they own the souvenir store across from Fenway Park and do a ton of licensed stuff for sporting goods stores across the country). She got me a dozen men's extra small tshirts as a gag gift for Chanukah last year. They're nicely sleeping in a safe in the house.

However, as a Sox season ticket holder, in 2003, my Holiday card was a picture of my 2003 Sox World Series tickets with the inscription "Wishing you the peace and happiness in 2004 you enjoyed in 2003."
