BJ Sands
Is it too much to ask for the Celtics and Lakers to play each other in their traditional green and gold, respectively? The alts are fine separately, but they should never be worn when the Celtics and Lakers play each other.
TheOldRoman
To my knowledge, the Lakers have never once worn a gold jersey. They wear YELLOW, just like the Steelers, Packers, and any other team who claims to wear "gold" becuase yellow sounds whimpy. I agree with your point, though.

phayze
Lakers wear white on sundays and the Celtics probably planned this a while back. It would have been nice to see the green vs yellow, though.

I was just joking around, and it wasn't a shot at you, anyway. It was a shot at the teams.Pretty much every team who wears yellow except for Michigan (maize) claims they wear gold. They do so because gold sounds more powerful that yellow.

They do so because gold sounds more powerful that yellow.I wanted to chime in that I have no problem with teams calling "yellow" "gold"--in fact, I do it myself. I guess it all seems like semantics to me. But I think it should be mentioned that the teams dressed in "gold" do have support from some legitimate sources:The Webster's and American Heritage Dictionaries respectively define gold as "a variable color averaging deep yellow" and "[a] light olive-brown to dark yellow, or a moderate, strong to vivid yellow." While by no means dispositive of the matter, it does lend some support to the practice of calling "yellow" "gold."It also seems that the practice has been going on for some time now. I know that the University of Minnesota got the "Golden" in "Golden Gophers" sometime back in the 30s or 40s because of the gold (yellow) football jerseys they wore. From what I understand, prior to that they were only known as the Gophers. But in the end, it's really just a matter of personal preference. It bothers some and doesn't bother others. The only team that actually acknowledges the color yellow (yes, I know it is the insect name) and they wear GOLD instead of yellow!Maybe I am a little too strict on my definition of gold, but his has always been a pet peave of mine. The 49ers, Saints, and Rams wear gold. The Steelers, Packers, Vikings and Chargers wear yellow. I know that no two teams use the same shade, but the colors are similar. They are two distincive colors.

I guess to me, the color gold includes metallic tan (e.g. 49ers, Saints) as well as the yellow with little orangish feel (e.g. the Golden Gophers). Michigan's maize would be outside of what I would consider gold. Similarly, yellow would include Michigan's maize, the Golden Gophers' gold, but would not reach the 49ers' gold. On a side note, whenever I see Michigan play Minnesota, its seem like the yellow pants they wear are slightly different colors. It's possible that the difference between Michigan's maize and Golden Gophers' gold may be an optical illusion caused by putting the same color next to navy versus maroon. Maybe Pantone could help us out with this one.

Depending on the team and uniform, some teams wear navy blue and metallic gold, others wear black and metallic gold. The basic athletic logo is black and yellow. But there are versions of the same logo done in metallic gold.
BBTV
I guess I disagree with the topic starter, because I thought that game was one of the best games of the year in terms of uniforms. Those are two of my favorite alts in the whole league (maybe even #1 and #2.) I understand the whole "wear what they wore when clashing in the 80s" thing, but the Lakers have changed since then anyway, so it's not the same. Like Rick Pitino said, Robert Parrish, Larry Bird, and Kevin McHale aren't playing for the Celtics any time soon. Might as well get used to bad basketball in bad uniforms. Same with the Lakers. If I were Shaq, I also would have left so I wouldn't have had to wear those stupid white jerseys anymore.
lilgump
Does it also have something to do with the refs. I know that they like to call one syllable names for colors, and I'm not sure what they call for yellow. Do they say white, or gold? Like for purple they tend to say blue, at least at the high school level.
IceCap
Both of these alts are great. I don't understand the arguments against these alts. First off, both look nice. Secondly, they arn't as anti-traditional as many think. They arn't replacing their respective team's tarditional uniforms. Both the Celtics and the Lakers keep their traditional duds, they just added a modern twist in the form of alts. Kind of like the NY Rangers alts. Nice, modern unis, but they're ok because they've keept the traditional unis.

Why it's always a one-syllable description, I don't know. Purple and orange becomes blue and red. Got maroon? Nope, it becomes brown.
TruColor
I've actually been starting to put detail color reports for colleges and universities on the SSUR. I figure since about 95% of the Pantone colors I collect come from the schools' own websites, they shouldn't care if they are also published on my site. We'll see what happens.Anyway, three schools that have been mentioned in this thread are Georgia Tech, Minnesota, and Michigan. Here are PDF files that show the differences:Georgia Tech - Institutional ColorsGeorgia Tech - Athletic ColorsU. of Michigan - Institutional ColorsU. of Michigan - Athletic ColorsU. of Minnesota - Official ColorsI have also started a section on the SSUR for locating all of the color sets I have; all that's up thus far is the letter 'A' for Four-Year schools. I'll continue adding these as I get them done.College Colors and Nicknames Detail Reports
BJ Sands
(and we wonder why people leave this board.) wow, you took that as a shot? I'm not sensitive to that kind of thing but some people might be. And two people pointed it out, not just one.Back to the topic, I just think that when two teams have combined for soooo much history in certain color combos they should always wear those when they play each other. Especially when the yellow of the Lakers and (untouched) green of the Celtics are the colors.

I agree, but it still isn't the same with the Lakers wearing those bastardized versions of their classic jerseys. It is a "modernization" that I can live with, but it was completely unnecessary.
