2006 Brewers retro alts are now customizable!

When did the Brewers start putting names on the backs of their jerseys? I could have sworn there was a short time where they got rid of the pullovers for the button-downs before changing to the script "Brewers" wordmark but didn't put names on the back. I'm not sure if I am remembering this correctly, and someone posting here undoubtably knows this answer for certain.

That said, couldn't you get a nameless #19? Or buy a nameless #19 and have someone customize it for you?

There's gotta be a way to get this done.

Seeing as Yount is a coach this year and will be wearing this jersey, it is perfectly appropriate to have his name on the back.

About 10 years ago I went to the Mitchell & Ness store in Philly to get a jersey made (in my size) with a retired MLB player's name and number on it. The player has been a family friend for years and the M&N guys wouldn't do it for me.

This is a guy who was in the union, was/is fully vested in the MLBPA pension, AND was/is currently working in an "on field" position with an MLB team.

I had the player write a letter to both the MLB/MLB Properties, the MLBPA and M&N, granting permission for M&N to make the jersey. They all refused.

The player and I went into M&N together and asked to have the jersey made and M&N said they couldn't do it. The player asked if he could get one in HIS size, and they woudln't do it.

The limiting of names to active players has to do with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Players get a cut when a jersey is customized with their name and number. I'm not sure if it is still in effect, but in the aftermath of the 1994 lockout, you could not get a jersey customized with a player's name if that player was not a member of the MLBPA (i.e.: "Replacement Player") despite that player being on the active roster. Since retired players, managers and coaches are not active MLBPA members, they are also excluded.

Players don't get "royalties" when someone buys their jersey. All the licensing money that the MLBPA generates is split evenly among all their members. This is why Barry Bonds opted out of it.

And yes, replacement players are still out. Just look at them in any MLB video game--bogus names, just like Barry Bonds.

Well, you could always claim your name is BYOUNTY and remove the first and last letters...

Actually, it allows you to put R YOUNT

Yeah but all that stuff has to be approved by a representative of the MLB Shop, a HUMAN representative. Back when Nick Swisher first was called up from the Rivercats to the A's i purchased an Authentic Customized A's alt jersey with SWISER 33 on the back only to get an e mail the next day saying the order ahd been canceled. I was a bit pissed so i called the MLBShop and they told me i couldnt get the jersey because Swisher was yet to be approved by MLBPA. I thought this was bogus (and still do) so i ordered a N. SWISHER 33 jersey and accually got a call the next day from a representative saying my order had been rejected because it was too close to a player currently on the A's roster <_< . I was pissed, but they gave me a 25% discount on a jersey of any other A's player. And yes, I chose Eric Byrnes, just a month before he was traded
