Not being involved in design in any fashion, I have to ask -- what is it that everyone seems to have against Phoenix? It seems like every time they release a new logo, someone posts a "Phoenix Does It Again" thread. I admit that there is a lot of similarity among the college logos that lead to those threads (at least the ones that I have seen), and that is worth criticizing. However, some of the other work on their website looks pretty good to my untrained eye (having previously checked the site in an effort to answer this question on my own). I just don't understand the widespread disdain/dislike.

As for this logo, I like the image of the sailor climbing over the wordmark (though I'm not sure he would want to be carrying an anchor if he is in such a hurry). With regard to the wordmark itself, it looks crisp and fits well with the logo. I also like the depth that the gold shading provides. I don't think it is fair to criticize the wordmark just because it doesn't use a custom font (and maybe in this case the bill reflected that a standard font was used -- though I have absolutely no idea).

Okay, fire away. I can take it. :D

Hey! :D That's my alma mater! Trust me, that logo is ALOT better than their previous one, which was what basically resembled a bunch of leaves/fire. Anyway, it's an improvement, for what it's worth. Tough to create a logo for a school whose nickname is the "Anchormen/women".

I don't know why all the hate to Phoenix. Maybe it's professional envy...? I know someone was ripping them for their website awhile back. Yeah isn't the best, but if you look at their client list, do they really need a fancy website?

A great example of not needing a fancy website is Warren Buffett. The guy is worth $40 billion, but if you looked at his company's (Berkshire Hathaway) website you wouldn't know it.

This is definitely better than the average Phoenix Design Works product. The Impact wordmark doesn't bother me so much, but that maroon retangle holding 'College' does, and the text inside it is squashed, a big typographical no-no.

The average human may not care that Phoenix doesn't have a nice website, but as far as I'm concerned, a good website is more or less expected of a professional design firm. I mean, you're a design firm. So isn't designing a website in some ways part of your job description? If you don't take enough pride in the way you present yourself, how do I know you're going to take pride in the work you do for me? If I do a Google search for your company name, and it takes me forever to find your site because your Google website entry is called 'Untitled Document,' it shows me you don't care and you're not worth my money.

I associate Phoenix with a lot of collegiate logos. I also associate names like Bosack and Rickabaugh with a lot of collegiate logos. Bosack and Rickabaugh do top-notch work that is crisp, clean, and individual, no matter if the design is for a client as big as Ohio State or as small as Bucknell. The logos that come out of Phoenix lack the quality, care and attention to detail you expect from a professional design firm. Many of them use the same design elements present in other Phoenix logos, and a good amount of them disregard fundamental principles of design and typography. Nearly every logo from Bosack or Rickabaugh is of the finest quality, but for every good Phoenix logo, I can count at least 5 bad logos. Granted, the design they do for professional leagues is generally pretty good, but they always seem to half-ass anything they do for colleges or universities.

So I guess, in a way, it is professional envy. I wish I could half-ass a job for a big university and get paid a whole lot of money. That would be nice.

On your suggestion, I checked out http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/ and you're absolutely right. The copyright at the bottom of the page says "1978-2006," it looks like it might have been created twenty years ago.

Except, of course, for the GEICO ad. Warren Buffett taking GEICO ads. Hilarious.

I haven't seen a pro league logo they've done in 5 years. There's no way that the guy who did some of the pro league work for them is still working there.

I couldn't agree with your statements any more though. I think you hit it right on the head. Bosack and Rickabaugh's work far exceeds that of Phoenix. Not even close. There are so many other smaller firms (in addition to the talented members of this board) that would jump at the chance to get some of the work that Phoenix gets and could do a far better job. For some reason Phoenix keeps getting work. To be fair though, I don't think Rickabaugh has updated their website in years either. Their website pretty much blows too.

Sorry DG, but this was a slam-dunk that just about wrote itself. And apologies in advance to youcan'tseeme, because I beat him to the punch.

Maybe he's trying to rescue Baxter after that incident on the bridge. But an anchor with 4 feet of rope won't do much good...
